To be heartbroken the summers finished

I don't want my kids to go back to school, I've loved living in this halcyon bubble and I'm heartbroken it's ending. Their childhood feels like a whisper in time, I just want to press pause for a while.

I know how you feel, Crockof. Doesn't apply to me now but years ago I enjoyed the freedom of holidays. Not having to get up early and do any chores before school time, which always seemed like an unearthly hour to me. I did work but part time so we had days to do as we pleased and relax other than weekends.

elliejjtiny · 02/09/2019 22:31

I'm quite looking forward to my dc going back although I feel really bad for thinking that. I just haven't had a break for weeks as dh has had about 2 days off all summer. Older ones are going to bed later and youngest one doesn't sleep through the night yet so it's been constant and I'm so tired.

Malvinaa81 · 02/09/2019 22:31

Glad when children go back to school, who wants them around all the time?

CorBlimeyGovenor · 02/09/2019 22:33

I'm so glad that there has been this post to counteract the miserableness of the earlier thread about how we should shorten the holidays due to wealth inequality! The school holidays are the reason why I have up my job and set up my own small business. Life is short and childhood even shorter. I love the holidays and I'm not about to have some miserable person try to make me feel bad about spending time with my kids.

Spludge · 02/09/2019 22:35

Clucky3 ...crying laughing. I think you have probably just said what a lot of people really feel. Sorry they've had their 6 weeks ...time for school I'm afraid. Off you go...

whyayepetal · 02/09/2019 22:37

My youngest finished school after A levels this summer. Really weird to have no "back to school" for the first time. Happy new term to all, and Flowers Brew and Wine for all parents and teachers.Wink

AMidsummersNightsNightmare · 02/09/2019 22:37

DD1 starts year 1 tomorrow, DD2 starts reception tomorrow and DS1 starts nursery tomorrow. I’m an absolute mess!

ILiveInSalemsLot · 02/09/2019 22:40

We ve had a fab summer. I love the freedom and lie ins but I’m looking forward to them going back to school. They’ll have other opportunities and experiences that I can’t give them. I do like the routine so I can enjoy not being in routine.

thenightsky · 02/09/2019 22:43

I still have fond memories of August holidays when mine were school age in the 90s. YANBU op.

ButterflyBun · 02/09/2019 22:43

Am I the only mum who doesn't have six weeks off?
I've had a fortnight with kids but the rest of the time it's business as usual. They've been up and out at childminder's every day.
Would love to just work term time!

clucky3 · 02/09/2019 22:45

@megletthesecond I have moved to counting the hours too. Roll on Wednesday: 34 to go! Confused

ssd · 02/09/2019 22:46

Do English schools go back tomorrow then?

Wakemeuuuup · 02/09/2019 22:46

I completely agree. Dreading Wed morning. Back to early mornings, arguments about getting ready etc. Ironically mine fight more after school when they're wound up than they have over the holidays

Crockof · 02/09/2019 22:47

I do agree that without routine I wouldn't enjoy the holidays as much.
I do work but extremely lucky that during school holidays I can compress my hours which means I can work evenings from home.
Those that are just starting school, blink and they will be a senior. For those that have little ones it does get easier.

No, I think that's what makes it so stressful to be honest. If I was just lying around relaxing with the kids I can see that it would be a lot more fun. I've had 2 weeks off and 4 weeks of holiday clubs which don't cover a full working day. I'm totally at the end of my tether.

Teddy1970 · 02/09/2019 22:48

I love Autumn and Winter but I get what you mean, Me, DH and DC have had such lovely days out together, long lie ins and just generally being together, I'm going to really miss it.

Spinnaret · 02/09/2019 22:49

I assume those mourning the end of summer don't have jobs.

Nine long weeks of juggling work and kids. Off you fuck now, darlings.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 02/09/2019 22:49

I am too
And in 19 days my baby leaves for university (sob)

MyOtherLifeIsAFairytale · 02/09/2019 22:51

Yup. Thanks me too. I love the holiday w my kid

Teddy1970 · 02/09/2019 22:51

I work part time term time, I'm very lucky I know.

Propertyofhood · 02/09/2019 22:52

I work in a school so am sad that another summer is over and I'm diving back in tomorrow and won't resurface until Oct... And I have enjoyed the time with the kids, especially now they are a bit older.

However, I think 'heartbroken' is a bit strong - you will be over it in a few days!

Nothingcomesforfree · 02/09/2019 22:52

Bloody hate it. Back to busy roads, clockwatching, evenings drawing in ( speeding up now I think).
Even little things like taking a coat annoy me ( down south we’ve not needed a coat for months). Just something else to be weighted down with.
And just when I am happy to have my bare legs out back into work trousers and tights they go.
This year feels worse for some reason. Autumn feels apocalyptic with Brexit.

isthisfairidontknow · 02/09/2019 22:52

Nope! I'm excited for autumn! I hate dinner and the heat.

MyOtherLifeIsAFairytale · 02/09/2019 22:54

And I work fulltime (60 hour weeks in term time) and do tonnes of volunteer work. BUT I run my own business so can work a little while away, and evenings etc while not away and kid on school holiday. I love Every Single Minute.
