To think that cherry blossom is not offensive?

We're moving soon and the house has a blank garden- just grass.

In addition to several other things, I'm planning on putting in two, dwarf cherry trees. They will be at the bottom, well away from other houses and won't grow big enough for their roots to be a problem for any buildings or block light to any windows.

I mentioned this to a friend and she thinks that falling cherry blossom will antagonise the neighbours.

Do people really get offended by a few flower petals on their lawns? Really?

Ooooooh, I wubz blossom. Go for it!

funmummy48 · 02/09/2019 16:45

I love Cherry Blossom. It wouldn’t bother me at all.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/09/2019 16:49

Cherry Blossoms yes. Sycamore NO.

This is worth putting on a tee-shirt.

mydogisthebest · 02/09/2019 16:56

I love Cherry Blossom. How sad do people have to be to be bothered by the petals?

Where we used to live our car and lawn would be covered in the petals but it never bothered us.

BlueJava · 02/09/2019 16:58

I think it would be lovely, but my parents complain the petals make the path slippery. (They are in their 80's though).

pikapikachu · 02/09/2019 16:59

I love them but not fruit trees as they are wasp magnets.

RosesAndRaindrops · 02/09/2019 17:01

I LOVE cherry blossom trees.

I saw this on active and wondered if I had really pissed someone off with something I had said...

I adore cherry blossom trees. I've not forgiven my parents for cutting down the one they had by the front of door of childhood home.

Fresta · 02/09/2019 17:05

Funny how most of the posters saying they love cherry trees are those that don't have one.

justthecat · 02/09/2019 17:09

We have one and I love it, bought for about £3 from Morrison’s about 6 years ago, it’s over 7ft tall now, I’d snap another up if came across one

msmith501 · 02/09/2019 17:10

We have cherry blossoms (big ones) and yes the petals drop mostly at once in a big heap and yes, unlike other trees leaves they dissolve very quickly when it rains - dwarf cherries are much smaller and also lose their blossom over a longer period (at least my two do compared to their bigger siblings).

Loopytiles · 02/09/2019 17:10

Neighbours couldn’t do owt about it.

Are they truly minature?

The main issues with the (v large) 60-70 year old cherry trees near me are the massive, deep roots. Ours cost £1.5k to remove the root when we had an extension.

old, very heavy branches drop off, five or more times in my street in last couple of years, which is dangerous. The leaves are also sinister IMO, bring to mind Agatha Christie’s Sleeping Murder killer’s fingers!

The blossom is still lovely all these years on though.

Deelish75 · 02/09/2019 17:10

Our road has cherry blossom trees. They are beautiful, but the blossom getting stuck to the cars can be a pain. It's only a couple of weeks though and it's an indicator that spring is springing.

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/09/2019 17:13

Fresta we have one in our front garden that just flowers and one that crosses over out boundary that flowers and fruits and I still love them. I just wish the birds didn't eat all the cherries.

DinosaursWouldEatYou · 02/09/2019 17:13

Wouldn't bother me, they're so pretty!

WutheringTights · 02/09/2019 17:18

I've heard everything now. People getting annoyed that falling blossom makes their garden look, well, like an actual garden. Thanks

leckford · 02/09/2019 17:22

Go for the cherries we have 2 and they are lovely if only for a short space of time

cookiechomper · 02/09/2019 17:28

No it wouldn't bother me.

megletthesecond · 02/09/2019 17:32

I would be thrilled if I or my neighbour had a cherry tree.
Who cares about the blossom being blown everywhere. Honestly 🙄.

BeanBag7 · 02/09/2019 17:34

I would much prefer that to the hefting great pear tree my neighbour has. It's too tall to actually pick the pears so it just drops rotting fruit all over our lawn and attracts wasps.

Flippetydip · 02/09/2019 17:36

My next door neighbour has an artificial lawn and is always out hoovering up the petals on his lawn. Can tell he's not impressed with it but he's never directly said anything about it.

Excellent - anything to piss off someone with artificial grass is a wonderful thing in my view. Artificial grass is the work of the devil, it is an environmental nightmare and has nothing to recommend it at all.

To return to the original thread, I wouldn't mind at all if our new neighbours planted cherry trees when they arrived; I love cherry blossom. Maybe you are going to be our new neighbour OP - that would be nice - go ahead, I give you permission to plant away.

HeronLanyon · 02/09/2019 17:38

Gosh I’d never considered anyone would not like cherry blossom falling. I’ve lived next to one before and it was really lovely. The blossom wasn’t falling for long and it was beautiful. Even on my newly mowed lawn. Ffs i am gobsmacked anyone would consider it a nuisance.

katseyes7 · 02/09/2019 17:45

l have three cherry tree saplings in my garden. l didn't plant any of them. My neighbour has one, though, and she thinks the birds may have propagated the stones. l'm thrilled! Free plants! And l can't wait for them to come into blossom in the spring.
There's always some miserable bugger who complains about anything, though. Sod them, and enjoy your cherry blossom.

NeverSayFreelance · 02/09/2019 17:50

I live in a street of cherry blossoms and it's the best! They're so beautiful! Yeah okay the petals get literally everywhere but that's half the fun
