Edinburgh. I'm sitting in bed listening to a mouse scurrying around underneath. They'll be wanting to nest inside, now that the weather's turning colder. And I also have the horror of hearing them inside the walls.
All very normal here in the New Town.

What are your bugbears where you live?

Minuss: Everything is really expensive here. The locals are well meaning but really nosy and exceptionally snobby.
Plusses: It's a very pretty tourist area. People travel from all over the world to visit here. Our families and friends live here. It is a reasonably safe place for our DC to grow up.

Town of 10000. Famous for its wool and sheep.

The buses are terrible. Every hour even on a workday. No buses after 6pm and none on a Sunday.

darkriver19886 · 02/09/2019 01:16

However, it's a nice town. Everybody says hello and there is a lot of cafes and antique shops.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 02/09/2019 01:20

Dog shit, people in my town think that they are above picking it up in the town itself, but in the lanes and on the coastal & park walks, they pick it up, bag it and leave for all to admire, despite the residents investing in bins.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 02/09/2019 01:28

Nimbyism. V expensive commuter market town in SE. Dire shortage of local affordable housing, leading to shortage of key workers (nurses, midwives, fire service, teachers) as they can't afford to live here.... locals fine with people shoving up crass mini mansions but huge opposition to bigger development.

Range rovers & big audis, Porsche cayenne. It's a rural area but the roads are not bad enough to need a 4wd, it's serious Chelsea tractorism.

Mothership4two · 02/09/2019 01:38

I like my town. People are generally pretty friendly. Genuine community spirit.

I don't like the traffic sometimes - can be a through route to avoid motorway.

A lot of care and planning has been taken to provide green areas with places for people and kids, teens and dog walkers and then some people leave their litter everywhere. It drives me nuts.

RoseMartha · 02/09/2019 01:42

It is not in Cornwall or Devon

SenecaFalls · 02/09/2019 01:42

I live in Florida. I really like my town. But hurricanes are the biggest drawback to living here. We are prepping right now and waiting to find out if we will get evacuation orders.

karenbokaren · 02/09/2019 01:46

There is no bar or restaurant. Or anything else. After 5pm even the one small shop is shut.

karenbokaren · 02/09/2019 01:48

And the fact that we muddle along nicely for 9 months with 500 people then come July over 2000 (mostly) utter cunts turn up and ruin the next three months.

karenbokaren · 02/09/2019 01:49

@SenecaFalls have they not ordered an evacuation yet!!? My weather showed it smacking in to you the last time I looked!

karenbokaren · 02/09/2019 01:50

@SenecaFalls SC have ordered mandatory evacuations haven't they? Maybe it'll miss you guys. Finger crossed for you.

karenbokaren · 02/09/2019 01:52

We were out sailing today and had a big swell from it already. My thoughts are with the Bahamas. Sad

Amortentia · 02/09/2019 02:05

Sectarianism! Especially after the weekend we've had in Glasgow.

I would be delighted to never see another overweight, middle aged male who's squeezed himself in to a figure hugging Celtic or Rangers top. ( no problem with people being overweight but fgs wear a top that fits.)

SilverySurfer · 02/09/2019 02:09

My town has no really nice shops, no antique shops or an auction house which I used to love when I lived in London. The architecture is a horrendous mish mash which only leads me to assume the planners were either bribed, drunk or on drugs,

The only positive thing is that I have a lovely garden which makes me happy.

Hidingtonothing · 02/09/2019 02:16

Hate it, it's filthy, crime ridden and soul-sappingly depressing. Council are either utterly incompetent or corrupt, no one seems sure which and I honestly think it might be the most hopeless place in England. Everyone I love is here but I'm not sure how much longer I can stand it Sad

spinderella76 · 02/09/2019 02:23

@helpmeiamatoad

I hope it's really you too (see other thread!)

BobTheFishermansWife · 02/09/2019 02:34

The fact that we have a great parkway system which means you can get across the city fast and easy BUT as soon as there's an accident everyone forgets how to drive and the entire place grinds to a halt.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 02/09/2019 02:45

I think we might be in the same town @hidingtonothing
I hate the dearth of opportunity and poverty of aspiration here.
There is a permanent air of hopelessness over everything, all the time, and everybody is miserable Sad

Urskeks · 02/09/2019 02:56

They've spent the last three years renovating the entire centre of the town, and there's now minimal parking specially for the disabled, and the new shops they're bringing in are so expensive that people like my family can't afford to shop there or eat out there.

Also it's Tory central. Very Brexit. Every other building seems to be a public school, an artisan bakery or a damned hipster microbrewery.

And they're taking away the library.

Urskeks · 02/09/2019 02:58

Also, my sister is a really wonderful, selfless person who is always helping others less fortunate, but some godless ho ripped into her about ever coming near her house again, I hope she turns up to church for my sermon on photographing nature as god intended

FuckFacePlatapus · 02/09/2019 02:58

The local Council who make a mess of all our roads, build too many new housing estates with no infrastructures in place to support it, otherwise its a lovely little market town.

Redshoesandtheblues · 02/09/2019 02:58

Christ.
Hidingtonothing. Don't hold back!!

But i get you. Flowers

Woodlandwitch · 02/09/2019 03:03

It’s too large for me ask prefer village life. Think the population is around 95k now and new housing developments are continually popping up
I hate that it seems to have a bad reputation despite it having some real positives and beautiful parts. People only seem to see and remember the ugly and negative.
