Would this bother you? Wedding

Small wedding, 19 people in total.

Groom, best man, his two brothers and our dads are wearing the same blue suit. The bridesmaids partner has bought an extremely similar style suit/same colour and will look like a groomsman.

Feel like I can't dictate what people wear. Would it bother you?

Given that this person has had a to fork out for a new suit to attend your wedding, he’s probably gone for a colour that is likely to give him a good return on his investment. I don’t think you have a leg to stand on.

I know it’s hard because it’s probably been all consuming for you to plan it all, but your wedding isn’t the centre of anyone else’s universe, i’m sure he’d rather not have spent his hard earned money on it at all, but he has done because clearly he wants to be there for your special day.

Cryalot2 · 01/09/2019 20:35

Have a good time, it will be obvious he is different because of the buttonholes and accessories..

FairyBunnyAgain · 01/09/2019 20:40

We went to a wedding this weekend, I think most of the men were wearing a blue suit, with all but a few wearing white shirts. The only exceptions were some of the elders who had fetching beige outfits.

The bridal party also had blue suits, at one point DH said to me maybe he shouldn’t have gone for blue. He has grey/black suits he wears for important events at work but they are really dreary, blue is so much better.

HillRunner · 01/09/2019 20:40

I agree with others. If there are so few attendees, everyone will know who is and who isn't a groomsman.

Good luck with your wedding btw! I had a tiny wedding myself, and it was lovely.

Ragwort · 01/09/2019 20:41

I’m not sure why you would want such a ‘formal’ dress code at a small wedding? Surely the point of a small wedding is to avoid all the stuffiness & form dress codes. I had a very small wedding but gave no thought to what colours my (few) guests, best man etc were wearing. No button holes or flowers in sight.

PinkP65 · 01/09/2019 20:44

In hindsight years from now, today's hooplah will be next year's funny story. You will look at the wedding photos and remember, but also that your real wedded lives began that day and that suit will be a minuscule dot of the past.
Per my own experience, enjoy everybody there, and make a list of who gave you what. Take as many pictures as you can.

3 people at my wedding were gone 6 months later, and the outfits did not matter. My husband did not write down the names of people or what they gave us as I listed them to him while unwrapping them... I wanted to write thank you notes, of course. He only wrote the names of people who gave us cash. !!!! So many things you learn about someone.

Enjoy your perfect wedding with only the closest people to you, and take in everything.

Smile...

Recent prom 95% boys in navy suits and brown shoes.

TanMateix · 01/09/2019 20:51

I find this baffling. There are hardly any attendees once you count the groomsmen and the bridesmaids. I understand the need of uniforming important guests in a big wedding but in such a tiny one?

Great he got a similar suit, otherwise he would have stood up too much on the photos.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 01/09/2019 20:54

One of the guests turned up to my wedding wearing exactly the same colour as the bridesmaids. It didn't bother me at all!

Enjoy your day and don't worry about the small things!

Nautiloid · 01/09/2019 20:55

I expect he was thinking of you and wanted your photos to match without a random black suit in there.

HeadintheiClouds · 01/09/2019 20:58

No. No one really takes any notice of bloke’s suits, tbh. What’s the issue if anyone assumes he’s part of the wedding party anyway?
It doesn’t diminish it for anyone else.

noeyedeer · 01/09/2019 21:08

I got married abroad. All the men wore linen suits. Only my husband and his best man look like they are in the wedding (button holes, same hat). BUT the wedding photos look superb! The men really looking similar tied everything together (not planned at all). We had 14 people, including us.

Echobelly · 01/09/2019 21:09

Yeah, it'll be totally unnoticeable on the day to anyone, I guarantee it.

BetsyBigNose · 01/09/2019 21:14

I honestly wouldn't sweat it!

My SIL came to her brother's wedding in the same dress the 3 Bridesmaids were wearing - albeit in a different colour (BMs wore dusky pink, SIL navy). It just looked like a simple, 3/4 length empire line dress from the front, but had very fancy detailing on the back so it was very obviously the same dress! I think wearing the same dress to a wedding is much more embarrassing (only for the person wearing it) than having a similar suit, don't give it another thought!

Best wishes for your wedding OP!

Purpleartichoke · 01/09/2019 21:16

Men’s suits all look similar

Plus DH only owns one suit since it is so rare he needs one. It is dark grey. Serves for all special events including weddings and funerals. Would be very irked if he couldn’t wear it because that color was claimed by the wedding party.

Merryoldgoat · 01/09/2019 21:22

I had a black tie wedding - all the men wore the same. Zero issue.

sheshootssheimplores · 01/09/2019 21:24

Won’t the groomsmen be wearing a buttonhole? I would assume that that’s the kind of thing that will set them apart.

TheresWaldo · 01/09/2019 21:25

For 19 people and not a wedding at St Pauls I can't imagine sweating over what anyone would be wearing apart from the bride.

phenomenalcat · 01/09/2019 21:28

Perhaps he bought the suit to match his girlfriend's dress, which I imagine work best with a blue suit as that is what you chose too.
The last two weddings we attended I noticed blue suits had become very popular and I'm not surprised as they look great.

justlonelystars · 01/09/2019 21:31

We had similar at my wedding where the boyfriend of one of my bridesmaids bought exactly the same suit as the groom/groomsmen (by accident, he didn’t do it deliberately!). I had a bit of annoyance when I found out in the morning as I was getting ready but as soon as the day started I didn’t think twice about it and with hind sight couldn’t care less.

Shoppingwithmother · 01/09/2019 21:35

I really don’t understand the need for all those men to wear the same suit - as others have said it seems an odd thing to do for such a small wedding.

Six out of 19 people will already be wearing the same suit. Presumably there are only about 3 other men going anyway, maybe even fewer. It just seems really odd to have made them all wear the same.

VladmirsPoutine · 01/09/2019 21:39

I don't see an issue. I don't even think it's necessarily that odd. If your soon to be MIL turned up in a white dress then absolutely there'd be an issue.

User344772734481882445 · 01/09/2019 21:41

Wouldn't bother me at all.

We had a similar size wedding OP (we had 14guests). It was wonderful!

I have no idea what anyone was wearing now! (though it was a long time ago! I think men were all in kilts!)

Relax, don't sweat the small stuff and have a BRILLIANT wedding :)

Congratulations :) x

PerspicaciaTick · 01/09/2019 21:54

There are only 19 people - surely you all know who everyone is?

TheCraicDealer · 01/09/2019 21:54

We went to a wedding this weekend, I think most of the men were wearing a blue suit, with all but a few wearing white shirts.

I was himming and hah-ing about colours when we were planning ours and a woman in one of the suit hire shops pointed out that most fellas have a blue or navy suit, so if you really want to differentiate the wedding party from the guests go for something else. Navy or dark blue has been the "in" colour for suits for a few years so it's not that weird that the guest has picked that.

One of the big plus points about a smaller wedding is supposed to be the lack of worrying about stuff like this, so just put it to the back of your mind. You won't give a shit on the day.
