insisting we don't home early from hols for a cricket match...

dp and i off on hols tomorrow, very far flung and remote place in the uk - around a five hour drive each way. it's been a rough few months for us with a bereavement and depression, signed off work etc. so we're looking forward to a change of scene, relaxing, long walks and board games.

we're due to checkout of the property next sunday at 11am. dp just found out that his cricket team's last match of the season has been moved from sat to sunday, kicking off at 1.30pm. he wants to set off between 8am and 9am to make it back in time to play. they've almost secured promotion to the league above on points (i don't really understand cricket! but he assured me they're more or less guaranteed to go up whatever the outcome of the match).

aibu in not wanting to leave early? i appreciate its only a few hours, but we'd actually miss out on a whole day of holiday as we've planned to do things on the final day. also, he'd happily have missed the match if it went ahead as originally planned on the saturday.

cricket's really important to him but this holiday is much needed head space for us both after a hard time. i feel a bit disappointed at the prospect of plans changing (even though only a little bit) at this stage.

fully expecting to be told i'm being unreasonable by the way, just looking for others' opinions.

thanks all.

I can understand your disappointment but I can also understand your DP's eagerness to play the last match of the season especially if they're being promoted.

Is there a way you could make that Sunday feel like an exciting last day of the holiday - day in the sunshine (hopefully!) And celebration afterwards?

detectivebird · 01/09/2019 15:02

@palahvah you mean i have to go and watch him play cricket?! Shock

only joking. that's a good compromise. maybe i should just do a sun dance and pray for lovely weather on the sunday.

Meh it's only a couple of hours, I think you would be unreasonable not to

detectivebird · 01/09/2019 15:06

yeah think you're right @AryaStarkWolf we'll come up with a way to make it happen. thanks!

(shortest aibu thread ever?)

I can see both sides of this. Do you think that if you persuaded him not to leave early that the day would go ahead in the way that you’re hoping? Is he the kind of person who will put the cricket completely out of his mind or will you be able to tell that he’s thinking about it and wishing he was there? Will part of you end up feeling a bit guilty if he doesn’t go so that you didn’t fully enjoy the day?
If either of these things are likely then you might as well enthusiastically embrace the idea and try to get on board for cricket.

OtraCosaMariposa · 01/09/2019 15:16

It's a couple of hours. Just leave early, go to support him at the cricket, eat cake and drink tea.

Bookworm4 · 01/09/2019 15:18

He wasn’t playing if it had stayed the Saturday so they’ll surely have a sub in place?

detectivebird · 01/09/2019 15:18

@Bookworm4 yep but as it's now sunday there might be some who can't make it, so they may still be short.

HumphreyCobblers · 01/09/2019 15:19

I would be a bit gutted at missing a whole day of my holiday, given that you were planning to do something on that day.

Bouffalant · 01/09/2019 15:19

For just a couple of hours I'd leave early. I thought you were going to say flying back from somewhere multiple days early?

Fuck off would I be going to watch it though.

AmIThough · 01/09/2019 15:21

I think you should let him play as it seems like a big deal to him.
And he'll owe you one!

Ragwort · 01/09/2019 15:23

Not particularly helpful, but I have really started to to enjoy cricket over the last few years as my DS is a keen player, assuming nice weather it's a lovely chilled & relaxing way to spend an afternoon ( much prefer it to those early mornings standing around a muddy, wet rugby pitch Grin.)

TaskMistress · 01/09/2019 16:37

I'd let him play but you get to sit on the sideline with pims getting merrily sloshed in the sun.

NoHummus · 01/09/2019 16:45

He is being unreasonable as he was willing to miss it on the Saturday. I would not want to cut my holiday short for a cricket match, even if only by a few hours. Stick to your original plan.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 01/09/2019 16:47

My husband is a cricket captain and they are just about to hopefully be promoted. We would have left early for him to play. You’ve got the rest of the holiday to enjoy

TonTonMacoute · 01/09/2019 16:49

Get him to take you out for dinner at a good restaurant to make up for your missed last day?

Plasebeafleabite · 01/09/2019 16:51

Sorry but I think YABU for the sake of a few hours, do what you would have done a different day this week

Disfordarkchocolate · 01/09/2019 16:52

I'd say ok, as long as you get up early to pack and tidy and we don't waste Saturday doing it.

StroppyWoman · 01/09/2019 16:56

I'd go back early too - it will mean a lot to him and you could go for a special meal after instead perhaps.

Petalbird · 01/09/2019 16:58

Could you see what time you actually get to your holiday? I seem to find car journeys always take longer than expected because of stops.

woopdewoop · 01/09/2019 17:03

I’d say this is probably a big deal for him and you should leave early. It’s only a few hours. You could enjoy watching him play and then finish your holiday off by having a nice evening together afterwards.

holdontoyourbutts · 01/09/2019 17:04

If you'd planned on checking out at 11am and heading straight home then I'd say YABU, however if you had plans for the whole day on the Sunday I'd personally be annoyed.

Presuming you told him you didn't want to change your holiday plans what did he say? Did he make any suggestion of what he's do to make this time up to you?

tttigress · 01/09/2019 17:04

Tabu it's a few hours, not a few days

nokidshere · 01/09/2019 17:12

We would go back early. Cricket takes precedence in our house with 3 players/fans. It's only a couple of hours before you were due to leave, drop him off, put your feet up and book so,where nice for dinner.

Polyjuice · 01/09/2019 17:14

I’d go back early but I don’t like cricket...
... I love it Grin
It’s only a few hours OP and it matters to him so I would. Sounds like there will be a good team spirit/celebration after and he wants to be there.
