To rely on my tumble dryer.

Bit of an odd post. I use my tumble dryer a lot. I have two kids, we go through a lot of washing. I use my washing line as much as possible but when the weathers unpredictable I shove everything I can in the dryer.

Every time my mother in law comes over. She mentions the dryer. Saying things like you need to get rid of that darn dryer, I can’t believe you are using it again, they cost so much money, I’ve always coped without one, why don’t you dry it outside (whilst it was raining), telling me it will all shrink (I’m pretty good at laundry and know how to read labels and not what to dry in them). Telling me to save all my washing until it’s sunny. I kindly explain that during the summer months I use the line as much as possible but when it’s rainy I use the dryer. I cannot wait until a sunny day to so all my washing because I would have tons to catch up on.

Its sounds stupid but every single time she comes over, when when it’s not on she makes comments on it. Is it really her problem?

I do a full load, sometimes more every day.

Aibu to not be able to cope without a dryer? How would you cope within the winter months? I don’t like it all lying around indoors to dry, my house isn’t big enough.

I rely on mine too.

Just ditched the washing line this week to make room for a rabbitat.

Stop inviting her over.

Or cover it with a sheet when she visits. Tell her you've covered it because you know it upsets her so profoundly.

CAK111512 · 01/09/2019 12:11

🤣🤣 good idea @TheLightSideOfTheMoon. It sounds stupid even posting this but I start to dread her coming over because of it!

Yanbu. It baffles me how het up some people can get over things that have no consequence to them. I sometimes wander if it’s a control thing - “I will get them to do it MY way.”

Jurassicmuma · 01/09/2019 12:15

When I moved in with dh I didn't want a dryer as I'd never had one at home but he has asthma and I was able to dry clothes on radiators so he insisted I got one. Best decision ever. I was hopeless with a washing line, I worked full time and always forgot about it. And having to kids it's been the best thing. Tell her shes just jealous!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 01/09/2019 12:16

Yeah, it's the little comments that get to you.

Each time my dad comes over he'll say, "How do you make so much rubbish?" gesturing at my bin.

It's not a question. It's a dig.

I make average amounts of rubbish. I know this. But I dread the comments when he comes over.

Passthecake30 · 01/09/2019 12:20

Wow. I'm a bit anti dryer, as in it annoys me when people admit to using theirs full time, never hanging out as it's easier... but even I admit to using it for sheets and towels in the winter.
Ask her what she thinks the solution to the washing mountain is? Or wait until she's due round and hang wet washing on the back of chairs, on doors, on kitchen cupboards, airers, radiators -I may be passive aggressive!--

Yorkshiremum17 · 01/09/2019 12:22

I lasted 6 weeks without my tumble dryer, it was dreadful, it was a really wet autumn, but not cold so no heating on , it took for ever for everything to dry, the whole house smelt of damp laundry, I hated every second of it. I love my tumble and would not be without it at all. She needs to wind her neck in, not her house!

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 01/09/2019 12:23

"Are you seriously going to make a comment about the tumble dryer every time you visit, MIL? You are a blooming stuck record! I'm not going to get rid of it so you might as well save your breath. Now, how about a nice cup of tea?"

hunsontherun · 01/09/2019 12:25

Never seems 2 stop raining here. she mite b jellus she had 2 do it the hard way? maybe her hubster objects 2 drier n she trying 2 save fase?

Blankspace4 · 01/09/2019 12:27

The first time she passed comment I would be tempted to laugh it off but firmly in a way that implies there’s no way you’re going to change “it’s funny how we all have our different habits isn’t it?!”

If she persisted I’d firmly ask her to mind her own business!

Celebelly · 01/09/2019 12:32

'If it can't be tumble dried, it isn't welcome in our house. So... off you pop, MIL'

spongemumnudiepants · 01/09/2019 12:33

I rely on mine too. Young kids and no garden or outdoor drying space. I'd be lost without it

AlexaAmbidextra · 01/09/2019 12:37

I tumble dry everything. Apart from clothes I don’t need to iron so I put them on hangers. I don’t have a line in the garden. I have no intention of getting a line in the garden. I like my towels to be soft from the dryer, not stiff from the line. I love that everything comes out warm and increased so can be just folded or hung. So the person upthread who admits to being angry with us tumble dryer users, I give not one shiny shit what anyone else thinks.

thetinytyrantsmother · 01/09/2019 12:38

I always grew up with a drier and since moving in to our new place we haven't had one (no room.) it drives me bonkers! I end up lugging the towels and sheets to dm's or dmil's to use their dryer. There's only so much sunshine we get and I hate the smell of damp clothes! We're actually looking to change the kItchen plan just to get one.

Tell her that since you're not washing and drying her clothes or vice versa she should stop letting it raise her blood pressure.

AlexaAmbidextra · 01/09/2019 12:38

uncreased not increased. 😄

Chickenwing · 01/09/2019 12:41

My MIL has this exact conversation too and I just smile and say nothing and continue to use my dryer. It's my favourite appliance and saves me so much time!

cakeandchampagne · 01/09/2019 12:48

“That’s enough about my tumble dryer, mil.” Then don’t respond to any further comments.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 01/09/2019 12:52

We spent 10 years without one, moved, and it was the first thing we bought. We live somewhere it rains almost daily. Laundry mountain was hell.

I honestly cannot see an increase in our bills from using the dryer at least 5 times a week. It cannot cost us more than a quid a week.

pennypineapple · 01/09/2019 12:52

YANBU I wouldn't cope without my mine in winter. I feel guilty about it as I know it's not the most environmentally friendly way but I try to make up for it in other ways.

Underworld345 · 01/09/2019 12:56

How much does a tumble drier actually cost to run? We have one in the garage but never really use it. We just put it all on airers on the spark room.

I’m not against using them, just curious how much it costs?

Dollymixture22 · 01/09/2019 13:05

I would be lost without my tumble dryer. I line dry when I can, but I work so it’s impossible to do this all the time. How on earth does she dry towels in the winter???

I have a friend who is snobby about microwaves for some reason. Always comments on mine when she visits. She hides hers in the garage and pretends to most people she doesn’t own on.

Maybe she is your mil😂😂

Belledan1 · 01/09/2019 13:08

I only recently got one the last year. I got it on black Friday and its a really good one. I do put stuff out sometimes but the dryer is great as i hardly have to iron anything now which helps as I work full time. My friend who works 10 hours a week comments about me using it but i think she understands now if you are not around in the day and it rains yiu cant get it in.

Cockerpooowner · 01/09/2019 13:42

I use my drier for 100% of my washing, usually one load a day. I couldn't imagine life without one. I don't have a line in my garden.

Hannahthepink · 01/09/2019 13:57

Getting a tumble dryer a year ago changed my life! Drying a family's laundry is such hard work without one. My Mil and Fil are always commenting on how much laundry we have, how much recycling/rubbish we have, how we have to use the dishwasher every day, how many showers we have... I just figure that they have forgotten what a difference children make in a household!

Newmumatlast · 01/09/2019 14:06

I love my dryer. It's an eco one and works out how long it actually needs to run to dry the clothes and it's just fab. Haven't noticed any real or significant chance in our bills as it runs on relatively little energy and was so worth the money. It means we dont get washing mountains as frequently which is key with both of us working full time, another adult in the home and a small one.
