"Oh my God Jane, you eat your food so fast!"

No you fucking idiot, I started my food before you did because you were talking endlessly.
But thanks for making me feel like a fat greedy pig in front of all the other wedding guests at our table.

AIBU? Or was she BU?

I don't think it's offensive.

We are a family of 4.

DH and DS2 eat super slowly.
Myself and DS1 are super fast eaters.

We talk about it frequently at meal times because it's very noticeable!!

We try not to judge, just observe - mummy and DD1 are fast eaters, daddy and DS2 are slow eaters. DH likes to push the benefits of eating slowly. I defend us speedy eaters !!!

Not sure speed of eating has much to do with weight! DS2 is a bean pole! (me, not so much! My stomach is a result of chocolate and cake eating! Not speedy eating!!)

I've always had comments on how fast I eat, and I suspect DS1 will throughout life as he literally eats like he's not eaten in years (so do I)

I think it's a personality/genetic thing...

I totally wouldn't relate it to weight (Hmm) or be offended ...

I used to get this in work. 'Wow you're always eating you'

Yes because I'm on a twelve hour shift and I'm on my feet for all of it so I snack continuously throughout the day rather than sit and have big meals. We don't all do 5 hour shifts like you. So fuck off Angry

Sorry, got confused with DS's!! DS1 is a DS (we have no DDs), and he is a bean pole and a VERY fast eater!!! I'm a bit tubby and also a very fast eater (though the two are not related. I'm tubby cos I eat cake and chocolate!! Not because I eat fasy!) DS2 is a slooooow eater (and the tubbier of the two DS, though still very slim). DH is a slow eater and a bean pole.

Mrspotatohed - why do you find it offensive that someone has commented you eat alot? (Confused)

WhyBirdStop · 01/09/2019 10:42

I get told I eat slowly a lot, I don't, I use my knife and fork properly, hold a conversation over a meal and don't talk with my mouth full. The people who comment are usually fork shovellers who either barely interact while they stuff themselves or I've seen most of their meal partially masticated. I have a healthy appetite, I'm not just pushing good around my plate, but I see a meal as something not to be gotten over and done with as fast as possible. (Unless I'm at work and have to quickly eat a sandwich while working). I never comment back other than to say, oh am i, I'm just enjoying it.

mrspotatohed · 01/09/2019 11:25

@User344772734481882445 because i don't see what they are gaining from it. Food and eating is a very touchy subject for a lot of people, it could be for me for all they know. I've never had weight issues or an eating disorder but then if I did it's not something I would publicise to colleagues. There's also a difference between eating large quantities of food and eating small quantities frequently.

It made me feel quite self conscious, and you wouldn't directly comment on my weight or appearance so I don't see why eating habits are any different. They all tie in.

It's unnecessary and pretty rude imo.

Fair enough Ginfordinner. That extra bit of info now makes me understand your post more. I guess I was thinking I could look greedy as sometimes I will have a large meal but it would be because I only had a packet of crisps for lunch and was really hungry for example.

NoDontLookAtMeImShy · 01/09/2019 13:21

If commenting on eating fast is negative... then why do you eat fast & put yourself in position to attract the criticism?

Read the thread, for fuck sake. Or just read the original post?

YANBU. If it makes you feel better, we went for a curry last week and I ordered a side which I didn’t finish. The waiter very loudly and from quite a distance (so people on other tables could hear clearly) said, ‘I see your eyes are bigger then your belly.’ Confused

Highandlow · 01/09/2019 13:57

I get this all the time. Been told I eat too fast , that I ''savaged that down' or that 'I did well managing all that'. Very annoying. Am not overweight, but I do like a decent sized portion. I don't really snack.

Chickenish · 01/09/2019 14:01

Some people just like to judge others. I believe in the old adage that what you criticise in others is what you think you secretly criticise in yourself. So like “what are you wearing 😂” is actually “what am i wearing 😂”.
