To wish for a silent hairdressers?

IndianaMoleWoman · 31/08/2019 22:53

Hair cut today, the hairdresser was lovely but asked 10,000+ questions and didn’t seem to get the hint with my short but polite answers, even when I mentioned that my small children are driving me mad with questions!

Does anyone else wish that there was a chain of specialist silent hairdressers where you could go for a bit of peace and not an interrogation?

I go to a hairdressers and when you 'check in' they give you a little card to tick what you want done, allergies, contact details etc Revamp, colour change, tidy up etc There is also a tick box for if you would prefer a quiet appointment or if you're happy to chat. This is mainly why I go to this salon Blush

Fluffyhairforever · 01/09/2019 14:09

I like in a country where I don’t speak the language so at the hairdressers I sit for about 3 and a half hours in silence. It’s pretty boring so I’d be grateful for the interaction I think!

Fluffyhairforever · 01/09/2019 14:11

I live* in a country where I don’t speak the language.

amusedbush · 01/09/2019 14:13

My hairdresser is amazing and after a quick chat at the beginning, he stops talking and I can just sit in peace while he works his magic.

My previous hairdresser was a right chatterbox and to be honest, I was relieved when she announced that she was moving hundreds of miles away Blush

Shockers · 01/09/2019 14:15

My hairdresser hardly speaks. I find it really awkward actually.

EggysMom · 01/09/2019 14:16

My local salon have, over the years, learnt about my situation and my needs - the two hours I spend in their salon are two hours away from work and away from our autistic son. Two hours where nobody puts any demands on me. Two hours of blissful pampering, when I can lose myself in the moment. They don't try to engage me in conversation Smile

karenbokaren · 01/09/2019 14:26

Try getting your hair cut in the States. Generally people are a LOT more friendly and open here. Add to that that a 20% is generally hoped for and I'm British and most hairdressers don't stop talking!!

The last one even talked through the head massage. Angry

I have become good friends with two that have cut my hair though.

Taxi drivers are the worst. 15 years in London has made me very adverse to long, chatty journeys.

SpearEyes890 · 01/09/2019 14:27

Next time say you have had surgery on your tongue or have a fungal growth involving rancid breath. These types need radical action lWink

karenbokaren · 01/09/2019 14:27

Those sorts of people? Hairdressers earn a lot where I live!

Criceta · 01/09/2019 15:16

Just go to a different hairdresser. Mine is lovely, does or doesn’t chat depending on whether I’m reading or not, but I never feel pressured to talk. I’ve tried several different places over the years and they’re all different, you just have to find a hairdresser at the non-annoying end of the spectrum!

CarpetBagged · 01/09/2019 15:43

It's the questions that make me want to give inappropriate answers.

Going anywhere nice for your holidays?
Oh yes, I've just booked a fortnight at the council dump it site where we will spend our days foraging through the skips!

CarpetBagged · 01/09/2019 15:46

However, I don't suppose ' those sorts ' will be well versed in quantum physics and the current stock market news Hmm

Nanny0gg · 01/09/2019 15:48

@busybarbara
Hairdressers earn good money and are highly skilled.

Maybe if you're going to a top salon or Nicky Clarke hun but if you're going to a normal high street salon like me they seem to be the wash ups from the local college who couldn't make it into theatre school

Well, aren't you a delight?

Next time, as it's so bloody easy, do your own hair hun.

TheGoogleMum · 01/09/2019 15:52

Hairdressing is skilled work, they usually have an NVQ I believe. I'm not great at small talk but usually get my friend to do my hair (she is a trained and qualified hairdresser) so as we're already friends the chat isn't awkward.

Nanny0gg · 01/09/2019 15:52

I really can't believe some of the spiteful comments on here.

It really is shit working in any kind of service industry in this country.
They should all know their place. It's disgraceful that they don't work in subservient silence.

I'm sure you have scintillating, intellectual conversations every day in your high-flying jobs.

Get over yourselves.

The80sweregreat · 01/09/2019 16:08

Cocker, nobody is more fat ugly and grumpy / frumpy than me but I find having my hair cut quite relaxing and I feel and look better ( for a few days at least! Till I wash it and it goes back to being frizzy again)

The girls may look groomed or younger or whatever, but once you talk to them you discover they have their hang ups and problems the same as anyone else has.
I had to change my hairdresser as my one left and I was worried but the new girl is very nice and friendly. Just give it a go! You may be surprised!

karenbokaren · 01/09/2019 16:19

Jesus there are some stuck up people who think a lot of themselves on this thread!!

IndianaMoleWoman · 01/09/2019 16:19

They should all know their place. It’s disgraceful that they don’t all work in subservient silence” Nanny0gg* that’s not what I’m saying at all. It’s just that my personal preference would be for it to be more like a spa treatment where it’s just you and the hairdresser and the focus is on relaxation. Granted I don’t get my hair cut often (as I hate it) but every time I do it’s a noisy salon with the local radio station on and a grilling about my life, which I don’t find relaxing at all - quite the opposite.

What I’m suggesting is maybe a chain of silent, spa-like hairdressers, maybe with scented candles, relaxing music and ambient lighting (but bright enough for the hairdresser to see!) I’m sure the spa staff who’ve massaged me in the past don’t feel like they’re being treated badly for providing their service in this manner, and I think there’s a real gap in the market for this for people like me.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 01/09/2019 17:42

@IndianaMoleWoman

Spa workers who have to work in semi darkness on their feet all day, it’s bloody hard work. Massage is physical work, it’s not easy or easy on your body. Yes, they probably are being treated unfairly. Spas are the worst for paying low wages,

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 01/09/2019 19:33

@TableDesk that is such a good idea!

Fstar · 01/09/2019 19:39

The exact reason for only getting 2 haircuts a year, i would pay extra for silence too

ChangeItChild · 01/09/2019 19:43

I feel the same! I know the hairdresser isn't interested in my job, my kids or my holiday, poor woman has heard it all before...

Just like the till operators at supermarkets...they don't really care if I've had a busy day, or what the weather is like outside etc. (And please don't comment on items in my trolley!)

...I know I sound like a grumpy old git! In RL I smile and pretend to enjoy the small talk because they're doing a great job...but inside I hate pointless small talk with strangers.

missbattenburg · 01/09/2019 19:51

I long to find a hairdressers with a good selection of ineresting magazines, a good cup of tea and silence.

Oh, and they can do away with the scalp massage rubbish that has taken over in the last few years. It's not relaxing. It's basically me holding me breath longing for it to be over and to get on with the cutting. I would imagine the hairdresser is thinking the same...

mashpotato10 · 01/09/2019 19:56

Yes! I have not returned to a hairdresser or two for that exact reason!

Sweetpeach3 · 01/09/2019 19:57

I work in a salon and usually you get the hint with the short answers but one of our hairdressers just doesn't shut up. And our regular clients just tell her shut up now lol or if she's talking loud they tell her use her indoor voice. We laugh about it but I can imagen it can be annoying if you want quiet time. But aswel some people go for the social side ! X
