Friend helped herself to Calpol while house-sitting

Got a message from my friend (call her L) who had been house-sitting and dog-sitting (for no pay) for her friend ('D') who has a lovely massive house while D was away. L told me that she felt unwell and helped herself to some Calpol in the house. However, she forgot to replace it and now D is going bananas at her saying it wasn't there when her son needed it. L doesn't know what to do... was she BU in using it in the first place? 🤔

And you can always scrape the mould off the top, like Theresa May ;)

SavingSpaces2019 · 01/09/2019 21:15

Jeepers
I've known grown ass men and women knock back whole bottles of Calpol for the 'buzz'.
Apparently if you drink enough of it, or even mix it with other painkillers/mild sedatives it has a similar effect as taking illegal drugs.

I never really beliveed that until i started working in the Addiction Recovery field.....and was gobsmacked when i heard this repeated by ex-addicts.

Some people crush over the counter painkillers into powder and snort it for a 'hit/buzz'.

My overactive imagination is wondering whether this friend has a secret addiction/reliance on substances?
Sounds like she takes their meds for a cheap high and then raids their cupboards/fridges for her munchie fix.....

Our cleaner helped herself (actually her son) to a banana when she was earning recently, and apologised profusely in a note. Personally, if someone did this, the note would probably suffice. It's irritating, but as someone else has pointed out, hardly a hanging offence.

jelly79 · 01/09/2019 22:12

@riceuten I just don't see how your cleaners son eating a banana is irritating?? Surely that would not be even a slight inconvenience??

Tigger001 · 01/09/2019 22:28

This is becoming quite entertaining,

why is a child eating a banana irritating ConfusedConfused

Adults taking calpol for a buzz !!!... never in a million years, would I have guessed.

I use Calpol, I can't stand taking tablets!

She should have said something though. I'd be pretty miffed if I went to my cupboard in the middle of the night and didn't have any for the baby.

pigeononthegate · 01/09/2019 23:00

Calpol's active ingredient is paracetamol, isn't it? The only "buzz" you'd get from overdosing on that is...organ failure Confused

Supermum29 · 01/09/2019 23:12

Sorry I forgot to replace the calpol as I was busy looking after your dog....

Helix1244 · 01/09/2019 23:44

Yes you can get norovirus from oysters -google it.
You can also spread d&v or noro or some food poisonings on to other when prepping food.

They think the oysters is because they filter feed.

Biancadelrioisback · 01/09/2019 23:59

@SavingSpaces2019 are you in America? I've heard of people doing that in America (called purple drank or something) but never in UK...

Kate0902900908 · 02/09/2019 00:09

You hadn't intended to use your jam yet..
Honestly I've never heard such randomness in my life! Hmm

Biancadelrioisback · 02/09/2019 00:14

Don't be so silly! You can't have spontaneous jam !!!

Kate0902900908 · 02/09/2019 00:16

If I ever get a cleaner she and any son she my bare can eat my bananas..

its people who wouldn't spare a banana that can afford cleaners

Kate0902900908 · 02/09/2019 00:18

It's almost like when your told
” Don't eat these quality street.. These quality street are Christmas quality street ”

This jam is not to be opened until November the 18th. This is November 18th Jam.

NigesFakeWalkingStick · 02/09/2019 00:19

I use calpol - I can't swallow tablets easily. No point to this Grin

HiJenny35 · 02/09/2019 00:20

She was fine to have some calpol.
She was a dick not to tell them she had used it. You'd only look in the middle of the night with a screaming child when everywhere is shut so she should have told them.

Aderyn19 · 02/09/2019 08:26

It's okay to be irritated that someone else has used the last of the Calpol and forgotten to tell you. But it's not okay to have a go at them over it if they've done you a big favour for free.
I think you have to accept that when you are getting free help, you give up the right to complain if that help isn't 100% perfect.

I don't like people helping themselves to things in my fridge, unless I've specifically told them it's okay. But if a friend is close enough to me to be staying in my house, I can't get worked up about jam. Although if they've just come over for a visit and aren't actually staying with you, then it's weird to help themselves to food.
The only people who don't live with me that I truly wouldn't mind helping themselves, are my siblings and parents.

happycamper11 · 02/09/2019 08:57

I think it's a little strong to call her a dick for no doubt forgetting among all the other info you likely have to relay when you've been looking after someone's home and pet for a length of time. I'm sure she intended to mention it but probably slipped her mind amid everything else Hmm

Sarell1967 · 02/09/2019 09:32

Dramallama. I love it

Gmom · 02/09/2019 09:35

I recently learned that one of my son’s teenage friends starts threads on mumsnet because he gets a kick out of winding up mums into hysteria over silly stuff. I’m wondering if OP is a child because adults know that adults don’t use Calpol.🤨

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 02/09/2019 10:09

Savingspaces2019

Getting a buzz from Calpol is utter urban myth nonsense. It contains no sedative and no active ingredient other than paracetamol.

Some OTC painkillers do contain codeine so possibly those are the ones being crushed up by addicts. However any “buzz” from Calpol is 100% placebo effect. And as a PP pointed out, paracetamol overdose is extremely dangerous and will harm your liver and other organs.

SavingSpaces2019 · 02/09/2019 10:57

To you maybe - not to the people who do it obviously otherwise they wouldn't be doing it

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 02/09/2019 11:00

Have you not heard of the placebo effect savingSpaces2019?

Thehop · 02/09/2019 11:35

We have a house sitter at the moment and she costs £30 a day.

D should know this.

Lucafritz · 02/09/2019 11:39

I use calpol all the time as i can't swallow pills. An adult only needs a 5ml syringe dose for effect hardly a lot and having half a bottle would make you very ill. But your friend is unreasonable for not replacing it
