Friend helped herself to Calpol while house-sitting

Got a message from my friend (call her L) who had been house-sitting and dog-sitting (for no pay) for her friend ('D') who has a lovely massive house while D was away. L told me that she felt unwell and helped herself to some Calpol in the house. However, she forgot to replace it and now D is going bananas at her saying it wasn't there when her son needed it. L doesn't know what to do... was she BU in using it in the first place? 🤔

She should have replaced it but huge overreaction over a £2 bottle of medicine.

SavingSpaces2019 · 02/09/2019 13:40

Have you not heard of the placebo effect savingSpaces2019?

Yes, i have.
So what?
Are you all giving your dc Calpol because of it's 'placebo effect' or because it actually WORKS?
The manufacturers are not selling you 'medicine' that is ONLY designed to deliver a placebo effect.....

Maybe those individuals are NOT experiencing a placebo effect because their body chemistry reacts differently -seeing as we're all individuals?
When ex-addicts share their experiences and TELL you the kind of stuff they did to get high or a buzz - what difference does it make if some of the population believe it's just a placebo effect?

A friend of mine once chugged back a whole bottle of Glucose syrup i'd been prescribed by the Dr for my IBS.
I had one spoonful and felt sick.
My friend tried it and got a buzz - from the sugar content i presume - and then proceeded to drink almost the whole bottle and spent the rest of the afternoon buzzing their tits off.

My body feels no effect from 2 Anadin Extra i'm advised to take according to guidelines, i have to take 4 to feel any effect on my headaches.
Paracetamol has zero effect on me, i once took 6 in one go as that was all i had in the cupboard.

One size does not fit all.....and not everyone experiences the 'placebo effect'.

EllenMP · 02/09/2019 13:50

I would be annoyed if I found an empty bottle in the middle of the night with a sick baby. But I certainly wouldn't go bananas over it, especially if the housesitter was not known to be inconsiderate in general.

Then you are an idiot and a danger to yourself @SavingSpaces2019.

Pain relief is not the same as a “buzz”.

Tractorgirlz · 02/09/2019 14:01

Taking too much paracetamol can damage your liver so you’d be stupid to take 6 tablets.

duffyluth · 02/09/2019 14:33

@SavingSpaces2019

Do you really expect anyone to take your posts seriously after saying you took 6 paracetamol in one go?

YOU are an ignorant idiot spouting shite.
A danger to myself - cos i know how my responds to OTC painkillers? Hmm

I didn't post here for some ego trip, i'm merely sharing my views and experiences in the DISCUSSION.

Seems like some of you are too far up your own backsides to appreciate that everyone responds differently to medications.....

RavenLG · 02/09/2019 14:49

Maybe she keeps taking things as she is sick of being the person to look after your houses / pets without any payment you cheeky skinflint fucks.

She should have told them about the calpol to be fair, but banging on about jam.. fuck me.

SavingSpaces2019 · 02/09/2019 14:50

Pain relief only works because of it's analegesic effect.....in modertaion you won't get a buzz.
However, take it in a high enough dose and the analgesia WILL give you a spaced out feeling or a 'buzz'.
'Buzz' is the exact word that was used by the people describing their experience to me....

How arrogant some of you are!

RainbowJumpers · 02/09/2019 15:17

Taking too much paracetamol will fuck your liver up regardless of how it makes you feel.

Biancadelrioisback · 02/09/2019 15:32

@SavingSpaces2019 so would you give your child or pet a double dose of pain relief if a single dose didn't appear to have the desired effect? Would you assume that their body just dealt with it differently? Or would you recognise that giving someone too much of most medications will cause medical issues, some of which are irreparable?

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 02/09/2019 15:39

Sorry @SavingSpaces2019 I must have missed the bit on the paracetamol packet that says “Do not exceed the stated dose. If you do exceed the stated dose seek medical help immediately. Unless you are SavingSpaces2019 who defies all known medical science and has a Special Liver that doesn’t get damaged by substances that are toxic to all other humans”

StrangeLookingParasite · 02/09/2019 15:54

Eight paracétamol (depending on their strength) can kill you, irrespective of how you feel. Be very cautious in how many you take.

SavingSpaces2019 · 02/09/2019 16:51

Only if you make a habit of taking large doses or take an abnormally HUGE amount in one go, and 6 tablets once in my lifetime hasn't done my liver any damage.

SavingSpaces2019 · 02/09/2019 16:54

so would you give your child or pet a double dose of pain relief if a single dose didn't appear to have the desired effect?

Hmm You can try and twist my words all you like.....i made a decvision for MY body KNOWING how my body works and responds AS AN ADULT.

Animals and children, ie - someone else's body....no, i wouldn't and never have.

SavingSpaces2019 · 02/09/2019 16:58

Well ArgumentativeAardvaark
I'm living proof that taking 6 Paracetamol tablets in one go didn't give me any adverse effects and i did not need to seek medical help.
That's a fact.....i'm sorry it bothers you so much.

Biancadelrioisback · 02/09/2019 17:10

How do you know it's had no impact on your liver? Did you have it checked before and after?

Longdistance · 02/09/2019 17:15

Who only has one bottle of Calpol in their cupboard? I’ve a few dotted around the house including Nurofen. This also applies for paracetamol tablets for adults. In my handbag, in the pantry and bathroom cabinet.

Biancadelrioisback · 02/09/2019 17:23

We only have 1 actually. We buy a new one when the current one has less than 1/3 left. But we have loads of pain relief in many different forms and strengths for adults.

RainbowJumpers · 02/09/2019 17:44

Not true. Small over doses of paracetamol can kill you or do irreparable damage. You have no idea what damage you’ve done to your liver. You hope your liver is fine. If it is you’re lucky. There’s a dosage for a reason.

Spinnaret · 02/09/2019 17:56

6 x 500mg paracetamol as a single dose is highly unlikely to cause toxicity. For most people, as a single dose, you would have to take at least 15 of them, probably more. It would be more problematic to take 6 on a regular basis over a period of days. Not that I am recommending people to take more than the labelled dose.

SavingSpaces2019 · 02/09/2019 18:41

How do you know it's had no impact on your liver? Did you have it checked before and after?
Well lets see........maybe i know because i haven't suffered any health problems as a result of it?

Drinking alcohol does far more damage to one's liver - and how many of you out there drink alcohol?

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 02/09/2019 18:55

The point of advising people to seek medical help if they exceed the stated dose is not because you will feel like you need medical help. Quite the opposite- damage can be done without any symptoms being apparent. You seem unable to grasp the very simple concept that just because the recommended dose did not touch your headache, this somehow made it appropriate to increase the dose. Don’t you see? There is zero connection between how effective the paracetamol is as pain relief and how safe it is for you to take an extra-large dose. Your protestations about “I know how my body responds” are utter bollocks. Yes, you may know that paracetamol doesn’t relieve pain for you. The answer is to take the recommended dose of a different, stronger, painkiller or a combo such as paracetamol and ibuprofen, not to just increase the dosage of paracetamol. Of course it’s unlikely that a single dose of 6 paracetamol will kill you, but the fact that you were stupid enough to think it was the right thing to do suggests that you’ll probably either do something else unwise with medication that puts you at serious risk in the future, or do this sort of thing repeatedly until the cumulative effect is damaging.
