Burns from Costa coffee

Well, a cup of tea.

Been on holiday all week, it's been lovely. Although accomodation was pretty sure. We had to change our bed sheets due to a period stain in my side and a rip on DPs side, as one example.

Going to leave today and got coffee and tea from the restaurant who serves Costa coffee. Just given a cup for the tea which was very full. Stupidly didn't ask for another cup or a holder despite thinking this was going to be tricky. Picked it up from the lid to walk away, not quite on the lid but holding on the top iykwim. The whole thing crumpled in my hand and burnt me. I tried not to drop it but had to because of the pain. Thankfully it didn't get DSS. Went to the till and informed the girl that I was very sorry but I'd dropped it and she literally sighed and rolled her eyes. Another woman stepped in and was like 'as long as you're alright' which I absolutely wasn't. She made me another tea despite me protesting as I just needed I've on it. Managed to keep my shit together until I got to the car. Thankfully had I've packs in the cool bag and have had to sit for 3 hours in the car with a bloody ice pack on it. I've birthed a child bit fuck me the pain. Thankfully it's calmed now but i feel so pissed off at this girls reaction. I've worked in customer service for years and hers was awful.

So aibu to be so pissed off?

I don't think the OP is saying the accident wasn't her fault, more the reaction of the member of staff which is representative of the lack of compassion wider society seems to have.

I disagree.

The OP is long and contains information totally unrelated to the eye roll and more common in stories where the complainant is looking for an excuse to seek compensation.

Ebad9518 · 31/08/2019 10:10

Wowee, I most definitely am being unreasonable then!

To be totally clear I had no opportunity to ask for a sleeve or an extra cup or a napkin because the drinks were dumped and then she ran off. My DP is in the car with a tired, grumpy toddler and DSS is asking a million questions at once. We're also racing to reception to hand the key back in time so can't stand around whilst the waitress takes an ice age to come back. So yes, I was beyond stupid thinking it would be okay, but really, I couldn't hold the cup in any other way as it was too hot. I've done it countless times before with coffee too. Totally taking the blame for the way I carried it.

When I dropped it, I was a step or two from the bar. The cup collapsed and being the polite Brit that I am tried ever so hard not to drop it but the pain was so bad I had to.

I went over and told them both I was very sorry but I've dropped my tea. At this point I felt like I was in shock (I know it sounds stupid but for a good hour or so I felt shocked) had tears rolling down my face and couldn't think straight because of the pain. The woman assumed I was okay. Yes I'm an adult but all I could think about was the pain. In fairness as well a few people queued behind me watched the whole thing happen and didn't say a word or offer any assistance.

The bed sheets, well I was a bit grossed out and it just adds to the whole feeling of substandard employees.

I don't think I will complain. My hand is much better, although I do have blisters forming and I swear I've lost feeling in my fingertips. But it was ultimately my fault for not waiting a minute to ask for a holder. I'd have done so if DSS was having to carry it, so I should have done for myself.

And for the PP complaining about reusable cups, mine was being used to for hot water for the toddlers milk as we were travelling all day. My partner had one though.

I am absolutely not looking for compensation. I hate this whole suing culture and absolutely would not want it. Sure if I'd just had life limiting injuries at some one else's fuck up and could no longer work and put a roof over our heads damn right, give me money. But for a minor burn? Do people really do that!?

OP posts:
Oakandlove · 31/08/2019 10:13

you sound like you are gauging a reaction for a claim. It is costa coffee, it is a hot drink you paid for and you ultimately are responsible as a grown adult to know how to carry a piping hot drink. I am sure they have a couple of thousand customers a day, your drink was not heated anymore than those other customer's drinks, they all manage it. It is your own fault.

Cornettoninja · 31/08/2019 10:13

@Nextphonewontbesamsung, I suppose you’re right.

For me it was the implication that she somehow blamed Costa and was thinking of complaining (which I think she should btw) and the fact that word of mouth does matter. Naming a brand that had nothing to do with her experience seemed with correcting.

I’m sure Costa are big enough to look after themselves and why I feel the need to correct that on their behalf I have no idea but I do - innate sense of fairness maybe! Grin

If she’d named the actual place then maybe I would make a conscious effort to avoid it myself or certainly make note of it if I knew it. Bit like tripadvisor I suppose.

Cornettoninja · 31/08/2019 10:14

*experience seemed with correcting - worth

Ebad9518 · 31/08/2019 10:15

Apologies for naming the wrong place, I wasn't sure if it was an affiliation as they make quite a big deal out of serving Costa and it looked like a Costa in there.

Once again PP, not looking for any form of compensation. I have a bit more self respect than that 😂

@Ebad9518 seriously, you should get that looked at properly, bad judgement doesn’t exclude you from healthcare - a&e would be empty otherwise Wink

Wehttam · 31/08/2019 10:21

I hate Costa, their coffee is like piss, their food more expensive than Harrods with quality of a fake Greggs. I also hate the performance the staff put on when making a coffee, what’s with all that clattering and banging, honestly sometimes you’d like you were in a factory. The staff can also be over friendly too, listen to them speak to the elderly next time you’re in. My sisters local branch is like an old people’s home, it stinks and- yes I hate costa. 🤮

Ebad9518 · 31/08/2019 10:21

@cornettoninja really? I literally can't feel any pain at all now. But like I say I'm not sure I can feel anything with my fingertips atm!

@Aprillygirl woah there! Why are people so damn nasty sometimes! Really gets my goat!

I had this happen to me in Costa by P&O, Dover. I couldn't hold the cup in the normal way as it was too hot, so I tried to pick it up around the lip (no lid). The cup just crumpled spilling hot coffee everywhere. The girl working there told me that it happens regularly.
Fortunately I wasn't burned, but what is the point in serving takeaway coffee in cups that are too hot to carry?

Cornettoninja · 31/08/2019 10:34

@Ebad9518 I don’t think it’s an emergency so no need to go to a&e or anything like that but maybe talk to a pharmacist and see if they can advise you on some dressings for it. If the numbness continues I’d see a GP or practice nurse about it.

Bouffalant · 31/08/2019 10:38

How does a costa coffee cup just crumple in your hand?

Aren't they all made of that thick corrugated cardboard so they don't need a sleeve, as opposed to thin Starbucks cups that do need a sleeve?

I don't understand what happened. Unless you picked it up by the lid and the cup fell out?

Aprillygirl · 31/08/2019 10:38

@Aprillygirl woah there! Why are people so damn nasty sometimes! Really gets my goat!

Gets my goat when people exaggerate their injuries and try to blame other people for them but there you go.

U2HasTheEdge · 31/08/2019 10:38

Your blisters and numb fingertips don't seem to be affecting your typing abilities OP. Be grateful for that and for the fact your idiocy didn't injure anyone else and move on.

Was there really any need for that?

OP I would get your hand checked out for sure.

U2HasTheEdge · 31/08/2019 10:41

OP was complaining about the staff's reaction. At no point does she blame them for her burns. She says that it was her fault for holding the cup the way she did.

PonderingPanda · 31/08/2019 10:45

Your tea was actually hot!!?? I never get anything more than warm in Costa

littlepaddypaws · 31/08/2019 10:45

aprilly does have a valid point, i wouldn't consider her being nasty or rude, even if op is upset by that being said

AlwaysCheddar · 31/08/2019 10:47

Why would you pick it up by the lid. Your fault for starters.

Oakandlove · 31/08/2019 10:47

'@Aprillygirl woah there! Why are people so damn nasty sometimes! Really gets my goat!'

If you are not looking for compensation, don't really get the AIBU. Are you saying their drinks containers are not up to scratch? It is not a fine dining establishment, more pick up and go. If I pick up a container and feel it is too hot, I immediately leave it rest and wait for a drop in temperature. This is in snowflake territory, thousands of people manage it everyday, you didn't, it is your own fault.

FamilyOfAliens · 31/08/2019 10:51

The barista “ran off” after serving you your cup of tea? Where did she run to?

This thread gets more bizarre by the minute.

Ebad9518 · 31/08/2019 10:53

@oakandlove it's lovely that you have the time for a scalding hot drink to cool before picking it up. I did not.

I guess my aibu is aibu to be a bit irked that people saw it happen, I visibly recoiled in pain and not one person asked me properly if I was okay. The woman assumed. Yes I was silly for not saying anything, or waiting the few seconds to ask for another cup. I have form for being a wet lettuce and not wanting to bother someone who had already shown herself to not give a shit.

She starts off by saying the cup is very full, which translates to the server over filled it does it not? The cup is over full yet OP decides to hold it from the top ffs. How does that even make any sense? Hmm
