To think this is an awful thing to say?!

Went out with colleagues last night and spoke to one who I’m friendly with but still don’t know that well. We are the same age/level and work as part of a larger team. He was discussing how he is working with a senior manager who always seems quite wooden at work, very attractive etc but never really seem to let people “in”. I have no problems with him but am always a bit on awe of how he manages to separate his personal and work life out so well. We were drunk and I was trying to banter a bit so said something like, don’t tell anyone I told you this, but senior manager looks like he “recreationally kills people at weekends. Just something behind the eyes.” I then went onto state I had no problems with him and it was just because he was so serious etc I had said that - woken up today and absolutely mortified!!!! Who says stuff like that. Is it rescuable?! Think was trying to be irreverent and funny but just completely missed the mark, I thought it was funny at the time but not good to say that to someone unless you are really, really good friends......

How did your colleague react to you saying that?

Marmarisa · 29/08/2019 08:37

They burst out laughing

And when I explained the reasoning, they agreed

This is totally a non issue. Really wouldn't worry about it

MrsBobBlackadder · 29/08/2019 08:39

You have beer fear. It's a thing! It will pass....

AmIThough · 29/08/2019 08:43

There are much worse things you could have said, and that is actually a really funny comment.

Colleague responded well so forget about it!

lastqueenofscotland · 29/08/2019 08:45

Sounds like the chat we have day to day in our office Blush

Marmarisa · 29/08/2019 08:46

Phew! I told it in passing to someone I’m close to and they couldn’t believe it and said what was I thinking - hence this thread. Relieved now Smile

I think that's funny 😂

LiveInAHidingPlace · 29/08/2019 08:48

That is really tame.

flumpybear · 29/08/2019 08:52

That's hilarious, I'll rob that off you, thank you!

Beer fear - brilliant, I've now got a name for it Grin

amusedbush · 29/08/2019 08:58

I think that's really funny Grin

You've just got The Fear because you've been drinking, the cringing will stop!

SuzieBishop · 29/08/2019 09:00

Definite beer fear - I say stupid things when I’m drunk then get the fear the next day. Just forget about it OP!

DoomsdayCult · 29/08/2019 09:00

It will get back to Sr manager you know.....
Yeah it’s a joke and you were drunk.
If Sr manager is a white man, it was a racist joke because of the myth that white men are more likely to be mass murderers.
I don’t think you will get into official trouble but you will have a tally in their mind which could affect your future career prospects. (For better or worse depending on corporate culture)

SummerHouse · 29/08/2019 09:03

What if... it's true... Confused

SchadenfreudePersonified · 29/08/2019 09:04

Phew! I told it in passing to someone I’m close to and they couldn’t believe it and said what was I thinking - hence this thread

Welcome to my world!
The number of times I throw myself into state of sheer terror because I'm trying to be friendly/ amusing/ clever/ fill an awkward silence - and then thought "Oh, Jesus! That sounded so much different in my head . . . "

I also have a tendency to be very indiscreet in e-mails, and also to "reply all" instead of just "forward".

I wish I could learn my lesson, but it seems that can't.

Mary1935 · 29/08/2019 09:04

Doomsday - what an appropriate name for yourself.

Deathraystare · 29/08/2019 09:16

Damn! You've found out his secret. You are in trouble now!!!

amusedbush · 29/08/2019 09:17

If Sr manager is a white man, it was a racist joke because of the myth that white men are more likely to be mass murderers.

First of all, it's impossible to racist against white people.

Secondly, get a sense of humour.

PazRaz10 · 29/08/2019 09:17

He laughed and agreed with you. I wouldn't worry it all about it!

notsohippychick · 29/08/2019 09:20

Doomsday bet you’re fun at parties!

augustagain · 29/08/2019 09:22

I have no problems with him but am always a bit on awe of how he manages to separate his personal and work life out so well

Perhaps he does that because he knows that if he gets drunk with colleagues he'll say all sorts of inappropriate things Wink

Seriously though, it's just Beer Fear as a pp said. Used to get it all the time in my past drinking career!

Pollypenguin01 · 29/08/2019 09:24

The thing you should really worry about OP is if your boss starts looking at you funny or trying to get you to ‘find files’ in the underground file room that nobody ever visits! You may have inadvertently stumbled onto what he’s really like and now you’re gonna be bumped off! ShockGrin

justmyview · 29/08/2019 09:46

I think your comment was funny. I wouldn't worry about it

womenspeakout · 29/08/2019 09:50

Clare: I knew it. When I woke up this morning, I had a feeling something terrible was going to happen and also, essentially, deep down, I’m quite an evil person

Michelle: Its called a hangover Clare, you’ll be grand!

Sorry to quote Derry Girls, but, 'you'll be grand'. Don't worry about it, although I'm like you and worry about silly throw away things I've said, and mostly other people won't even remember it!
