To think using a milkman is good for the environment

Just that really. Using returnable glass bottles instead of plastic.
Mine also delivers lots of organic stuff.
I know it works out more expensive, but there are usually plenty of things on offer, and I get so much from mine so save on fuel.

If you’re after something that’s better for the environment then try a plant based milk.
Organic means no antibiotics for the poor cows suffering with painful mastitis...
Cows milk also contains a certain level of pus cells, try oat milk!

Meadowland · 27/08/2019 19:19

Sounds like the service varies quite a bit.
Mine has never missed a delivery in 7 years !!! - no matter what the weather.
Delivers loads of stuff, including organic fruit and veg. Not a plastic bag in sight.
Can't fault him.

Ours uses electric milk floats and reusable glass bottles so from that perspective it's better for the environment.

Dairy in general is obviously not great but if you're going to drink milk then it's better

siring1 · 27/08/2019 19:21

Surely if you still do a big shop there is no additional transport cost over and above what been done anyway? The transport cost of the milk delivery is extra.

Also , I'm not sure the use electric anymore and please remember that when you plug in an electic vehicle the electricity being genersted to charge it up often cones from buring fossil fuel at a power station.

WaterSheep · 27/08/2019 19:24

I would buy milk in glass bottles if they sold it in local shops but don't want a delivery.

I'm exactly the same as Ginger. I also agree that the cost is quite prohibitive for many people.

Geschwister4 · 27/08/2019 19:27

I have bought my milk via the milkman for 23 years, I have always supported the business and been a loyal customer, but I have just had a letter from the dairy saying that milk is going up by 4pence a pint- that is just too much now, it makes it so much more expensive than in the shops, I will regrettably be cancelling my account with them.

SachaStark · 27/08/2019 19:32

I’d love to switch to a milkman for a few bits and bobs. Trying to do what I can, and the number of plastic milk bottles we must go through in a year is shocking. I mean, we recycle them, but still it’s not good.

I’ve never actually seen a milkman delivery before. How does it work? I’ve checked Google, and there is apparently one that delivers in my post code. Do they knock on the door, or just leave it on the doorstep?

craftynamechange · 27/08/2019 19:36

The birds peck the tops for the cream
My next door neighbour had campylobacter from this. His GP said it happens frequently. Try protecting the foil tops with some sort of cap.

We have milk delivered too. Had it stolen at 4am a few nights ago. NDN caught them on his cctv. They had both his pints and one of mine. I love that we have reduced our plastic use, and supporting a local business.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 27/08/2019 19:43

76p per glass pint here. I’m very happy with the service and glad to support two small businesses and use a bit less plastic. I realise that not everyone can afford it but we can, and therefore should.

greentheme23 · 27/08/2019 19:44

Glass bottles all get reused and taken by our milkman. He drives electric van. Eggs delivered too. I've definitely cut down plastic use.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 27/08/2019 20:06

Ours is 66p a pint and van is electric. If I'm on an early shift I see him coming round at 5am. Really triggers fond memories of early childhood, hearing the hum and jingle of bottles.
And it's great coming home from a night shift knowing there's milk on the doorstep so I can have my tea without worrying that we've run out.

It's also a good incentive to get up early knowing that it'll turn if I don't get it in quick. Sun hits front of our house from dawn.

Meadowland · 27/08/2019 20:23

@Sachastark
They leave it on your doorstep. Don't knock the door. Orders can be amended up to 9pm the day before.

Ours is fab.

We get deliveries 3 times a week without fail. Even in the heaviest snow we get our milk. Yeah it's more expensive but the cost is hardly prohibitive for a lot of people.

We have 11 pints a week at 77p each £8.50 a week basically. I could buy it in Morrisons for £3 but the bottles wouldn't be recyclable, the milk wouldn't be as fresh and the milk wouldn't be lovely local unhomogenised goodness. Honestly it tastes so much better.

It's delivered by an electric float from a farm about 4 miles up the road and arrives around 3/4am. I love hearing the milk float if I'm awake.

FamilyOfAliens · 27/08/2019 20:39

We’ve used a milkman for 26 years with a three year gap when we lived in Germany.

DBro used to be one so I feel good supporting them.

Freesunglasses · 27/08/2019 20:43

We've had the same milkman forever, so no chance I'd ever give up with him as he's always reliable and friendly.
We've also had an egg man forever, he's about 80 now and delivers the best eggs with a sunny smile every Friday. All out friend have started using him too. He leaves about five dozen with us on a Friday and friends collect them.

Redcrayons · 27/08/2019 20:49

I used Milk and More but they stopped delivering here and the new diary were terrible. I had weeks of him delivering to a wrong house and expecting me to pay For it.

And they stopped the glass bottles for plastic bags.
I love the idea of it though.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/08/2019 20:53

I live in a flat, if I used a milkman someone would nick it before I could get there Grin

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 27/08/2019 21:03

We live very close to our local dairy and can take our own containers in to fill straight from their machine then pay for what we take. It's a lot simpler than having it delivered as our milkman used to come a bit too late for us and sometimes we'd miss the delivery, plus DS loves seeing the cows Grin

Howlongtillbedtime · 27/08/2019 21:06

I love getting milk from the milkman but can only afford to buy half the milk we need from them. I had many teens here this morning and they got through 4 pints before I even blinked . But we will keep doing the wee bit we can.

icecreamsundae32 · 27/08/2019 21:24

Milk and more near me delivers plastic one/four pints! Same you get in supermarket but dearer - I know because my school orders from them!

isabellerossignol · 27/08/2019 21:30

Like other posters, the milkman here just delivers exactly the same containers that you get in the supermarket but charges double the price. If the bottles were glass, I'd use a milkman.

KipperTheFrog · 27/08/2019 21:30

Our milk and more delivery is in glass bottles from electric floats. Locally sourced. Yes, more expensive but so much more convenient. We have a shop at the end of our road that sells milk, but this way I don’t have to go anywhere and never run out. Plus, less plastic.

treeplop · 27/08/2019 21:34

I love it. Locally sourced organic milk where the farmer is paid a good price, delivered twice a week at the same time as my neighbour's.

Jellykat · 27/08/2019 21:37

My milkman is a godsend, local organic milk in glass bottles, i pay 70p a bottle, no delivery charge so same as shop price... and he even makes it when my road is completely iced/snowed up.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 27/08/2019 21:52

Surely getting it delivered/purchasing with your other weekly supplies/weekly shop is far better?
