Moving and no space for our dryer!

We are in the middle of moving from a council flat to a council house atm. We were offered the place and said yes because houses are scarce in the area and we would be waiting God knows how long for another offer and even then the area may not be as good.

Anyway, we got the keys today and the kitchen has no space for a dryer. Even taking a cupboard out we would still be about 15cm too small to fit it.
DH is throwing a fit at me suggesting we put it in the corner of the reception area. I literally cannot think of anywhere else to put it. Cupboard under the stairs has no socket and would probably be a hazard because the leccy box is there.

AIBU at suggesting the reception area? I know it's not ideal but we can't live without it, believe me, we tried for two weeks before and it was a nightmare.

Can you use a stacking kit to put it on top of the washing machine?

FantasticPhyllis · 27/08/2019 16:33

Could you sell the washer and dryer and buy a combo machine?

ellesworth · 27/08/2019 16:33

No because the washing machine is under a counter.

Will it stack on top of your washing machine?
Can you put it in a shed? Of course you may have to buy a shed and put electrics in.
Ask your neighbours where they put theirs, assuming all the house's are similarly configured.
Do without. Line or whirly gig out in the garden will do for many months of the year. Dry indoors when you have to.

Put it in one of the bedrooms? Not ideal, but needs must.

BeyondMyWits · 27/08/2019 16:35

Ours is in our garage, my mum's is in her bathroom, neighbour's is in her bedroom. Where there's a will there's a way. Would not be happy with it in my living room though.

IsobelRae23 · 27/08/2019 16:36

I know many of our council houses were done with sheds that had sockets

Waveysnail · 27/08/2019 16:37

Is it a condenser? Friend has hers in her bedroom as her room is huge so she turned one side into mini laundry area

Andonandonan · 27/08/2019 16:37

Stack them?

In an outbuilding?

In a bathroom? (Assuming big enough - but washing machine & dryer in bathroom v common in lots of countries.)

Condensing dryer in cupboard under stairs?

miaCara · 27/08/2019 16:38

There is no way I would put an appliance as bug as a dryer in the living room.
I would either put it under the stairs -a trailing socket should take care of the electrics , in a shed or outhouse/garage or if it really must be in the house and cannot possibly go under the stairs then maybe in the bedroom. But only as the very last resort.
Personally I dont have a dryer and manage with natures own, free drying facility.

I don’t believe it.

Presumably your house now has space for a washing line that your flat didn’t?

Andonandonan · 27/08/2019 16:39

Re stacking, if you’re thinking about moving cupboards etc anyway couldn’t you remove an end section of worktop so they can be stacked?

Expressedways · 27/08/2019 16:39

Some built in cupboards that would house the washer and dryer stacked without it being on view in the living room?

flapjackfairy · 27/08/2019 16:40

Buy a small one and keep it in the bottom of a wardrobe upstairs. Just pull out to use with a hose long enough to reach the nearest window.
Honestly I have one of the white knight mini ones in my caravan and I prefer it to the big one at home. They take a 3.5 kg load and are super quick.
They have poorer rating for electric consumption but seem to work in half the time . Honestly they are fab .

ellesworth · 27/08/2019 16:41

I'm assuming the kitchen was built around the available appliances that the previous tenant had. While in our old address a kitchen was fitted and they left space for the appliances.

We are planning to get a shed for things like lawnmower, so could possibly be an idea in the future.

Really can't afford to spare an extra £300+ on a washer dryer right now as we are having to buy carpets, curtains, lino for the kitchen, paint etc.

Buy a clothes airer and washing line as well then Confused

If you live in the west of Scotland you won't get much use out of that washing line Grin

Stick it in any room just now then in the shed when you get one. Will you be able to get an electrician to organise it?

itbemay · 27/08/2019 16:45

We had ours in our dining room until we got electrics put into the shed. A friend of ours has hers in a smaller storage shed just outside her back door and uses an extension lead when it is in use, not sure how safe this is but worth a thought

HariboLecter · 27/08/2019 16:45

Went from a house with no garden to having a garden, can't remember the last time I used our drier. Even if it's raining and I can't put stuff on the line, I put stuff on clothes horses now - not ideal, but a lot cheaper.

HariboLecter · 27/08/2019 16:46

Oh, and at old house, the drier was in a bedroom as we didn't have space in the kitchen for it.

TheFaerieQueene · 27/08/2019 16:46

Will it fit on the landing until you can get a shed?

dottiedodah · 27/08/2019 16:53

I would be careful with putting it in the bathroom TBH !.Can you just have it in the reception area for the time being do you think?.If possible maybe the bedroom might be better?.I agree with you couldnt manage without ours

Times10 · 27/08/2019 16:55

We had ours in our bedroom in our old place. And in the shed now.

Clangus00 · 27/08/2019 17:00

We’ve a condenser in our meter cupboard and an extension cable to the nearest plug in the kitchen.
