To think they should scrap TV licence and advertise?

I wouldn't care if there were adverts on the BBC. I would prefer it actually, so that I wouldn't have to fork out for a TV licence every year.

It’s not the adverts, it’s the fact that it’s unbiased. As soon as we don’t pay for it, it isn’t. (Just waiting for everyone left wing to pile in about right wing bias and everyone right wing to pile in about their left wing bias.)

Kplpandd · 26/08/2019 23:11

I'd be happy with that as I don't think I actually watch anything on BBC ...

Bibijayne · 26/08/2019 23:14

YABU. A subscription model makes more sense if you're going down that line.

ArkwrightsTill · 26/08/2019 23:14

Yanbu, I would prefer that.

pinkunicornsparkles · 26/08/2019 23:15

@Bibijayne A subscription model makes more sense if you're going down that line.

I'm sorry I don't understand what you mean?

YABU - we do t need any more trash TV and radio stations

Trickedia · 26/08/2019 23:27

YANBU. Who gives a shit if there non biased? I’ve never seen them as the morally superior tv channel! - it’s old fashioned. & the way they chase people for payment & actually send bailiffs round is friggin mental!!

BackforGood · 26/08/2019 23:29

YABU.

As is commonly said - David Attenborough alone makes the TV Licence fee worthwhile.

After the last few weeks, I'd also say the cricket commentary alone makes the fee worthwhile too.

Then there is the HUGE amount of information on the websites.

I'd hate to lose the BBC

PissedOffProf · 26/08/2019 23:31

You don't have to pay the license fee, you know. Just don't watch BBC. Fox News may be free online.

Daddiator · 26/08/2019 23:33

As much as I agree. Is the TV licence also not for watching live TV.....and not just BBC?

pinkunicornsparkles · 26/08/2019 23:36

@demelza82 I love some of the BBC shows. David Attenborough 100%.

But there has been some utter trash from the BBC. Eastenders? Horne and Corden? Homes under the Hammer? Bargain hunt?

OP posts:
5foot5 · 26/08/2019 23:40

I'd be happy with that as I don't think I actually watch anything on BBC ...

I think I have glimpsed a parallel universe. I rarely watch anything that isn't.

OK there are exceptions, Bake Off obviously and we got Now TV just long enough to see Game of Thrones. But compared to what Sky would cost say, and looking at what we actually watch, TV licence is a bargain

Beldon · 26/08/2019 23:43

I think it keeps the advert break times down on the other channels, that alone is worth it. Try watch a tv programme in America, you lose track of story there are so many adverts

WhereYouLeftIt · 26/08/2019 23:43

YABU.

Couldn't find anything I wanted to watch onTV last night so started watching Sherlock (Season 4 episode 1) on a commercial channel. Gawd, the ad breaks! Could they have picked worse points in the story to break into? I don't think so! So abrupt, too. Literally the last word would be out of the actors mouth and the channel ident would be onscreen.

Now I imagine that if a show is made for commercial TV, it is made to have natural break points. That chunks the show up into a particular rhythm. BBC shows don't have to be limited to that rhythm. They can flow to the needs of the story being told.

So if BBC went commercial, all shows would have that restriction. No, I don't fancy that at all. I'll keep paying the licence fee. It's good value.

Fleetheart · 26/08/2019 23:46

I don’t want adverts and I respect the BBC’s mission. I don’t want another biased channel controlled by rich old men.

Yellowpolkadot · 26/08/2019 23:46

@pinkunicornsparkles YABU to call homes under the hammer trash!

I do agree that Attenborough alone is worth the fee though 😊

pinkunicornsparkles · 27/08/2019 00:05

Hmmmm so I really like the 'Stacey Dooley investigates' series too. I wonder if that would still air without unbiased funding.

@Beldon I think it keeps the advert break times down on the other channels, that alone is worth it.

How does it achieve this?

OP posts:
Solonelywastheballard · 27/08/2019 00:08

I would rather it was like Netflix and you could pay to have it turned on or not. I'd also be happy with adverts though.

LittleDoritt · 27/08/2019 00:09

YANBU. I don't have a tv and no matter how many times I tell the licensing people they send letter after letter after letter. The license fee should be abolished just because it drives me so mad Grin

Flairhead · 27/08/2019 00:11

I don't mind paying. I think the BBC has some great shows (Strictly starts soon!) and I'd rather they weren't interrupted by adverts.

Supergrassyknoll · 27/08/2019 00:12

YABVVVVU IMO. The BBC is an envied institution worldwide, do you not utilise all of the services it provides? It's not just bbc1 and 2!!

Persea · 27/08/2019 00:16

Yes, YABU.
Adverts are fucking torture. Thank god for record tv so I don’t have to put up with them on other channels. I will quite happily pay the licence fee for that, and no ads on radio, alone.

Redglitter · 27/08/2019 00:17

I object to paying my licence fee. Theres not a single programme on BBC I watch. Why should i pay for something I dont use. Subscription would be much fairer

BigChocFrenzy · 27/08/2019 00:30

The licence fee is about a bunch of privileged mc demanding that their own preferences be paid for by the rest of the population

It is outrageous that ordinary people, struggling to make ends meet, have to fork out what is to many a large amount of money, aöö for someone else's abstract principles that they don't give a fuck about

Make the BBC subscription-only
then those who care about it, pay for it
