To think they should scrap TV licence and advertise?

I wouldn't care if there were adverts on the BBC. I would prefer it actually, so that I wouldn't have to fork out for a TV licence every year.

The thought of having adverts on BBC fills me with horror. Why does everything have to be funded through marketting?

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 27/08/2019 17:29

Why would Netflix be the appropriate barometer when they only do TV?

Probably because the TV license is only to pay for TV, you don't need one to listen to the radio.
Yes it might fund the Radio, but it's for live television use.

familycourtq · 27/08/2019 17:30

I like radio 4 as there is a lot of good stuff but there's pleaty on their I dislike as well

Agreed. If I never have to switch off another worthless episode of "the kitchen fucking cabinet" it will be too soon. Also the Archers can fuck off (and I like R4 and would pay a sub for it).

familycourtq · 27/08/2019 17:31

and Round Britain fucking pissing quiz - that really is wank

MerryChristmasHarry · 27/08/2019 17:37

But the money for the stuff that isn't live TV has to come from somewhere. That's why the concept of needing to fall in line with Netflix is quite curious.

Can you write to them and ask them to stop the fucking incessant marketing of their own stuff then please?

I really enjoy it, very civilised and unlike most quiz programmes these days there is not a brainless celeb in sight (or hearing).

Pah! The questions are ridiculously contrived and the pompous pseudo-intellectual tone of the whole thing is vomit inducing (although I will concede it is civilised).

I love the bbc. I like that they cater for lots of different ages. I love bbc4. I love bbc3 comedies. I listen to bbc sounds podcasts. I happily pay the licence fee and I don't mind subsiding all the stuff I don't watch or listen to. I don't like the fact that they pay presenters stupid money. No one cares if lineker is on match of the day. They'd still watch it.

I agree there are a bazillion cheaper and better people for that gig - he's had a good go (and he doesn't need the cash). Charlie Webster could do it - she has almost got me interested in football with her R5 contributions with Adrian Chiles.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 27/08/2019 17:57

Yabu.

Most of what we watch is BBC. Documentaries, fab period dramas, CBeebies, comedy. It's brilliant value for money and I love that there's still a form of media free from constant advertising!

TildaKauskumholm · 27/08/2019 21:47

The licence fee is outdated with the other choices available today. Stopped paying it a few years back. The very few BBC series I am interested in will eventually be on Netflix or Amazon (and I could have both of those for less than a TV license).

StarbucksSmarterSister · 27/08/2019 21:58

I would hope nobody is stupid enough to only have one news source.

Some do only have one. Even worse some people never watch the news st all.

stoneysongs · 27/08/2019 22:16

@Hollycatberry Peaky Blinders wasn't produced by Screen Yorkshire - it was produced by an independent production company (or co-produced by two of them) and funded mostly by BBC commissioning money, with some coproduction money from screen Yorkshire, in return for which lots of it was filmed there. This is very common but not the same as it being made on spec and then sold to a broadcaster. A drama like this is hugely expensive and way too risky to make unless you have a firm commission.

JustAVoidReally · 27/08/2019 23:20

As a former very heavy user of BBC services, I can't think of anything I'd miss from the BBC at this point, even Radio 4 went to crap years ago, their comedy output these days similarly went off into real dum-dum territory a good 15 years ago
their news is an absolute joke and VERY heavily filtered for inconvenient facts by HMG especially where our forces involvement in middle east is concerned (and frankly any intelligent person uses diverse news sources anyway), and American channels are doing drama, actually better now.

I happily pay for subscriptions and endure advertising for the content I do use. I don't see why users of the beeb can't do the same.

If you think the rest of us should pay for your BBC on pain of prosecution, in case it becomes less rich, presumably you would be happy to chip in for netflix and satellite for the rest of us (on pain of prosecution) too. Grin

JustAVoidReally · 27/08/2019 23:22

"Their comedy output these days... well that went"*

DownstairsMixUp · 27/08/2019 23:32

Subscription only..BBC is horse shit

Redglitter · 28/08/2019 01:19

Do you HONESTLY really NEVER watch anything on BBC tv, listen to BBC radio, use the BBC website or podcasts

I can HONESTLY say yes I really dont. Theres not a single BBC show on my planner or recorded on my Sky box. I listen to local radio stations. I use the Sky/STV apps for news & I don't listen to podcasts. So why should I be paying for BBC services. I dont pay Sky for channels I dont want and pay for ones I do.

HermioneWeasley · 29/08/2019 12:33

I think it should be subscription- the monopoly is unfair and unjustifiable in this day and age

penelopewynter · 30/08/2019 08:37

I can't actually still believe a TV licence exists. Even saying it sounds ridiculous and antiquated! A bit like black and white TV or dial-up internet!

The Beeb seem to be desperately clinging onto something that to most people obviously needs a complete overhaul. Come on BBC, get over your arrogance and get with the times!! Subscription seems to be the obvious way to go in this day and age. The worst part is the aggressive manner in which they hound the very people they supposedly cater for. Sending out their threatening letters to innocent people. And Capita, well a quick internet search brings up a multitude of horror stories about them.

For those of you that say why should I keep paying a licence fee when I don't watch the BBC anymore, why do you??? We cancelled about 5 years ago and don't miss live TV or Iplayer at all. Netflix and Amazon Prime provide all we need! And yes we have kids under 10 and no we don't listen to BBC radio either!

larrygrylls · 31/08/2019 07:57

It is amazing how many people use ‘I like it’ as a reason why everyone should pay for the BBC.

If you like it, pay for it.

Imagine the government deciding to supply some info/news through the internet (it kind of does via the BBC website) and making every single person who bought a computer pay for a ‘computer licence’, and prosecuting those who did not. No one would accept it.

Or how about an ‘electricity’ licence if the government owned one electricity supplier, regardless of whether you used it or not.

You can argue about the bias of the BBC but it certainly has the potential to be used for government propaganda. And, as for the pay of its bloated management structure and ‘stars’, we all have to pay these people, like it or not.

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 31/08/2019 10:13

Has it been pointed out yet that the BBC dont get to keep all the licence fee money? That some goes to ITV, channel 4 and channel 5 as well?

If we scrap the licence fee, those channels will have to up the number of adverts as well.
