To wonder what happened to Body Shop?

Where have they gone wrong? Why are their shops so dead on the high Street. They were buzzing in the 80s. Is it online shopping? Lush?

I’m sure they brought back the banana shampoo after the last thread like this on here..

I don’t mind the body shop, it’s kist fairly pricey for what it is.

RibenaMonsoon · 26/08/2019 18:24

Anita Roddick didn't "sell out".
She died. She had a stroke and died a year later.
I met her once, she did a talk at our school, back in the day. She was extremely passionate about protecting animals from cosmetic testing.

But yes, I must admit I boycotted them myself when l'oreal bought the company.
Such a shame, they've changed the range so much, most of its pants. Plus the staff ambush you when you go in there. It's not a pleasant experience anymore.

Blankscreen · 26/08/2019 18:25

I used to love the body shop and baskets you could get made up of different products. It was brilliant going in and choosing for a friend's birthday present and getting it made up.

Now it's just really expensive for what it is.

SunshineCake · 26/08/2019 18:25

Not worth what they charge but mainly far too pushy assistants then clueless when one actually wants help.

RB68 · 26/08/2019 18:26

It does well on home selling with agents - the cit e cream is back as are a few others I recognise from my youth. If you find a home seller they often have special sales of stock they are rewarded with which can give a better price

RB68 · 26/08/2019 18:26

oh yes and banana is back too

BikeRunSki · 26/08/2019 18:26

L’Oréal happened
And Anita Roddick died
And Fair Trade/Natural Ingredients/Organic etc awareness was raised and lots of other people started doing it, or became wider known of the back of this awareness
And Lush happened

TildaKauskumholm · 26/08/2019 18:26

There are much better products available everywhere now, theirs are full of crap.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 26/08/2019 18:27

The MLM is a shame, I'm surprised by that tbh.

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 26/08/2019 18:28

It's a number of reasons for me. First, I think my taste in fragrances has changed since I was a teenager - I used to love the fruit scented shower gels and soaps, now I find them too sickly. The decline of the slightly alternative hippyish vibe in there is also a shame, as it used to set it apart from the likes of Boots, and it was an affordable place to go and spend your pocket money on a little soap or something. And on a personal note, I developed an allergy to tropical fruit in my 30s so half of the stuff in the Body Shop brings me out in hives now!

I loathe the hard sell, but tbh I find Lush much worse for that than the Body Shop.

Wiltshirelass2019 · 26/08/2019 18:28

@BikeRunSki banana shampoo and conditioner is back I’m waiting for it to be delivered this week 😊👌

BikeRunSki · 26/08/2019 18:28

Banana is nothing like it was though @RB68.

KurriKurri · 26/08/2019 18:28

It's expensive and the shop assistants can be abit in your face 9not as bad as Lush obv. - no one is that pushy !)
The one our high street has closed down recently (along with several other high street shops - the whole town is dying off)

whensa · 26/08/2019 18:29

I love a few things, like the coconut body wash. Hate the huge stacks of body butter, does anyone use it?!
I got fed up when they stopped doing refills or large bottle sizes, meaning more packaging. As a pp said, if they'd stuck with the refills they'd be laughing. Lush has taken a lot of their audience.

Also they permanently have eg 40% off but you need to faff around with discount codes. If they actually just lowered their prices to the discounted price they'd probably be seen as even less of a higher-class brand I guess.

I really loved the animal soaps as a child!

Wiltshirelass2019 · 26/08/2019 18:29

Smells the same to me

JaneJeffer · 26/08/2019 18:29

This is their price mark up in Ireland. Ridiculous!

BikeRunSki · 26/08/2019 18:29

@Wiltshirelass2019, it’s a poor imitation of what it once was.

origamiunicorn · 26/08/2019 18:31

I don't go in there as you get pounced on by over enthuastic customer assistants. Not as bad as Lush, but still annoying.

AnnaFiveTowns · 26/08/2019 18:31

They ought to bring back their perfumed oils from the late 80s and early 90s; I'd love to get my hands on some "Roma" oil!

scarbados · 26/08/2019 18:31

Because they seem to be obsessed with oversweet smells for their body products. I used to be able to get lots of things with minty and really sharp citrussy smells. Then they ditched them in favour of strawberry and vanilla.

I often want to go in and check their products now but as soon as your shadow falls across the doorway, there are staff at your heels trying to sell you things you don't want. Or haven't had the chance to decide if you want then or not.

SignedUpJust4This · 26/08/2019 18:32

I was sure she sold for a massive fortune. Im sure i remember reading about it. My mistake. Sorry Anita.

SignedUpJust4This · 26/08/2019 18:33

Everyone in school had white musk perfume sticks.

combatbarbie · 26/08/2019 18:35

I have 3 consultants in my school mum group.... Only ever buy when a deal is on, I do rate their drops of youth range though.

I won't forgive them for changing their bb cream though!!

Verily1 · 26/08/2019 18:40

I used to love it used the banana conditioner and strawberry body wash.

Liked everything except the musk range.

Lots of my pocket money went there!

Never forgave the L’Oréal sale- didnt realise that wasn’t still the case- who owns it now?

I had loyalty to Anita who I respected but it was just another company when she died.

I want to like it but hate the pushy sales girls and find it’s just full of body butter.

Seems too bland and shiny.

They need to re- embrace the boho usp!

actuallyquitesmall · 26/08/2019 18:42

I hardly ever go in there now - there's been a few things I really liked, but they've been discontinued.

Who the hell uses that much body butter anyway? It's in every single gift set.
