...to think about getting a piece of breastmilk jewellery?!

I can't work out if I think it's a bit gross or lovely!

Basically, from what I gather, you send off a little of your milk and it gets made into a kind of powder/resin and you can have it set as a ring or pendant, etc. Visually it looks quite nice, from what I've seen, and given breastfeeding has been a difficult but ultimately v rewarding journey for us, I kind of like the idea of something to commemorate it when we're done (which hopefully is a while off yet).

But am I mad? Has anyone had breastmilk jewellery made? Do I need to give my head a wobble?

YABU for coming on to an internet forum and asking for validation when you know you want one. Just get one, not that much of a big deal.

It's just a form of commercialism, designed to make money out of sentimental mums. Nothing wrong with that, per se, but at least recognise what it is you're buying into.

In my very personal opinion, it's gimmicks like this that adversely affect breastfeeding rates, as it paints bf-ing as some sort of way out, niche practice that is embraced only by mums who are a bit... strange.
I don't agree with this depiction by the way, I bf-ed all three of mine, but to me it's just normal. It's the whole fanfare reaction that discourages the normalisation of it.

If you want a memento of your dog or cat, put their collar around their water bowl and grow a plant in it. It’s lovely and functional, personal to you and costs nothing

Monty27 · 26/08/2019 02:29

Is it a trophy to yourself?

FenellaMaxwell · 26/08/2019 02:36

I have a LOVELY pair of snot earrings from DS’s first cold. Www.bogeybijoux.co.uk Grin

Seriously though I really don’t get it. Isn’t the small human being who lives in your house a commemoration of breastfeeding?

Monty27 · 26/08/2019 02:41
Grin People remember the beauty without trophies
GummyGoddess · 26/08/2019 02:45

Yep, nobody else is going to give me a trophy or a medal! Grin

A colleague has a necklace that contains the first tooth of all three of her children.
It's a little freaky and a bit like the attached

I'd just be wanting to ensure that the jewellry was in fact my breastmilk and that samples/vials were not mixed up with someone else. Yikes!

Monty27 · 26/08/2019 04:14

Shock Confused yuk

Thankgoodness1 · 26/08/2019 04:25

Whatever floats your milk boat.

PhilCornwall1 · 26/08/2019 04:29

@SunshineDays2019 I can't ahem "express" why, but just no.

Quality comment!! 👍

PhilCornwall1 · 26/08/2019 04:33

Could you imagine it being valued on Antiques Roadshow in a decade or 10?

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox · 26/08/2019 04:33

I thought this was a well known con... a fool and their money..etc.

HennyPennyHorror · 26/08/2019 04:39

I think it's a bit gross. Reminds me of those pendants people have their loved-ones ashes made into!

I think they're banking on "baby brain' to sell these!

Toneitdown · 26/08/2019 04:43

Sounds totally bonkers to me, I don't get it at all. But it certainly doesn't do any harm so if it would mean something to you then go for it. It would be such a shame for you to not do something important to you just because of judgement from other people. If you're worried what people would think then just don't tell them. I don't think you'd have any clue what it was if you saw someone wearing it. It could be your little secret.

Monty27 · 26/08/2019 04:57

Ís this a reverse post?
Anyhow it's a weird idea

Sweetpea55 · 26/08/2019 06:23

Why would you want your breast milk preserved forever. Its a bit yuck

Shmithecat2 · 26/08/2019 06:24

@WereYouHareWhenIWasFox

I thought this was a well known con..

Was it? Interesting. Any links?

NoSauce · 26/08/2019 06:29

Ha. I thought this was going to be a joke thread.

WHY?

Sargass0 · 26/08/2019 06:44

How would you know it was your breastmilk or whether it was breastmilk at all? Probably a bit of plaster of Paris from wilkos more likely but I suppose it doesn't matter as long as you believe it.

Monty27 · 26/08/2019 06:49

It's a bit bitty eeewww

CatteStreet · 26/08/2019 07:01

'Is it a trophy to yourself?'

So what if it is?
God forbid a woman celebrates herself in any way. But a man giving her a big sparkly (unethically mined) rock as a sign that he has Chosen Her is just fine.

ethelfleda · 26/08/2019 07:14

It wouldn’t be for me, OP. But then I’m not in to jewellery. But if you want to you should do it!

Oblomov19 · 26/08/2019 07:18

I don't like the idea. I did breastfeed both ds's. It's similar to people who save/eat the placenta etc. I just think it's a bit too unusual. A bit yuk.
