AIBU?

AIBU to be pissed off with Greggs?

So,two weeks ago I go in my local branch of Greggs to buy my usual vegetable bake. Sorry says the 12year old boy man behind the counter, but we have no vegetable bakes today. The same thing happened again the next day,and the next. On the fourth day,I asked the manageress what was the problem with the vegetable bakes. Apparently, they hadn't been sent any,and wouldn't be for the 'foreseeable future'.
I am not a vegetarian or a vegan, but I am not a big meat eater. I don't like beef, lamb or ham. I like chicken, but I am not a fan of most of their chicken sandwiches/baguettes etc as they are smothered in mayonnaise which I detest.
Then yesterday,I read in a newspaper that Greggs are in the process of 'substantially extending their vegan range'. Apparently, their vegan sausage roll has been so successful, that they are going to be rolling out a load more vegan options in their stores. (Just for the record,I can't eat the vegan sausage rolls as they contain quorn, and quorn makes me ill).
I am annoyed by the fact that they have stopped selling their vegetable bakes, but are increasing their vegan range. I appreciate that the veggie bakes are probably not vegan, but am I right in thinking that those of us who are vegetarian and not vegan,or like me,aren't much of a meat eater, are being sidelined, while they fall over themselves to extend their vegan range?

Continuing the side conversation, though I know what OP means about being frustrated when a favourite dish disappears (I still haven’t forgiven Pret for discontinuing their cardamom chocolate), Quorn makes my friend ill too. It’s made from some sort of mushroom protein* that quite a few people cannot stomach. Personally, I’d rather have a recognisable lentil or chickpea dish than some weird manufactured substance.

  • “Quorn is made from mycoprotein which is produced by adding oxygen, nitrogen, glucose and minerals to a fungus called Fusarium venenatum.”

Email or tweet them. Also, Greggs is regional so what sells in one area may not sell in others. For instance, I can't buy stotties in London.

As an aside, you can buy frozen Greggs vegetable bakes in Iceland.

Greggs food is disgusting. Go to pound bakery and get a vegetarian sausage roll. You'll enjoy it. Then you'll fart for a week.

So go somewhere else. Boohoo. They weren't selling well (because they're minging). Much ado about nothing.

They're vegan sausage rolls are nasty! Ds is dairy free so I've tried to sneak him one of these a few times and he takes one bite and says ewwww! To be fair I don't rate Greggs at all.

I'm not surprised - Quorn is muck!

I'm a lentils girl myself.

It's the iced fingers I'm upset about. None now for months. The vegetable bakes were not great but I occasionally want a cheese and onion pasty. My ds loves the vegan sausage rolls. It will soon be time for the chocolate gingerbread bat biscuits which they should do all year.

Another vote for Thomas the Baker, if you're anywhere near one. Their spinach florentines (aka spinach bakes) are delicious.

They sell or get rid based on supply and demand, so obviously more people want vegan options and nobody was buying the veggie bake. A lot of quorn has egg so actually that won't be what they use in everything new just because it's in the sausage roll. As for pushing aside veggie for vegan... you can eat the vegan stuff, it makes no difference that you're not vegan. I'm sure you eat chips. Chips are vegan, shocking really... I'm sure you think I'm being a dick (I am) but maybe you need a reality check. Or just go somewhere else Hmm

(They sell them in Iceland)

I can't think of anything worse than quorn 'sausage' roll, but their vegan wraps are so nice. Sweet potato/salad filling with beans and sauce.

Yabu. Sorry, I loved them too but if they dont sell that well it doesnt make business sense to continue producing them.

Ooh @AwkwardSquad and @RortyDogOfTheRemove whereabouts in NY are you? I grew up there and can remember Thomas the Baker. Amazing cheese straws.

You can get the Greggs Vege bakes at Iceland.I think its 2 for £1.50. Just get a few packs and heat one up with your tea. You can then take it to work the next day. You can wave it in the air whilst walking past Greggs.

I am vege and sick of losing any options in favour of vegan. Loads of restaurants near me have stopped their vege section and gone all vegan.

I have a friend who is vegetarian - has been since late childhood.
She says after years of improving choice when buying food the range is contracting again as ranges (in shops and restaurants) because they appear to be increasing the vegan range at the expense of the vegetarian range. As they are only able/willing to stock a certain amount of none omnivore food and veganism is increasing. Clearly she can eat vegan food but generally finds eggs and dairy improve her enjoyment of food, especially cheese.

Not being funny but basically shop somewhere else.

I LOVE this! You sound like that character from the tv series “Mum”- can’t remember her name but the sons girlfriend! I love her ❤️

but unfortunately a lot of vegan food contains quorn!

Not really as most Quorn isn’t vegan.

@RaspberryRippleCrisps

I don't eat meat, and I have to say I really do not like the vegan sausage roll. It was rather tasteless, and I had to slather it in mustard to put a bit of taste in it!!!

As a few posters have said, it was a novelty and people got a bit bored with it.

Try Wilkos for food too. I had a delicious cheese and onion bake-type thing from there the other week. Only about 89p I think, and really filled me up. It was nice cold too.

Have to agree with a pp though, that being rude about the man behind the counter, and demanding to see the manager makes you sound bratty and entitled. Do you have this 'can I speak to the manager' hairstyle by any chance???
