To hate this awful weather

I was been bitten five times yesterday and now have unsightly red blotches on my arms and legs. I’ve spent today sweating like crazy all over (face, scalp, you name it) while attempting to keep cool in the furnace that is inner London. Tomorrow DH and I have been invited to a bbq and I’m having real anxiety about going, as I know I’ll be so hot and sweaty in front of the other guests Blush I also had loads of chores I needed to get done today which hasn’t happened as it’s been too hot to move. AIBU?

YABU. A BH with weather like this is like winning the lottery. I took a couple of extra days and am in the middle of 5 days off lazing in the sun, pub lunches in beer gardens, walks, trips to the coast and it's like being on holiday without having to deal with airports and I still get to sleep in my own bed and cuddle my cats. What's not to like. And chores can almost always wait. I'm going for lunch with relatives tomorrow but a BBQ also sounds like a fabulous idea to round off the BH.

U2HasTheEdge · 25/08/2019 19:27

It's beautiful. Love this temperature.

Spent the day at the coast. I have tomorrow off for once and we are going to go again. It is heaven.

U2HasTheEdge · 25/08/2019 19:29

It's going to cool down again by Thursday , if not before anyway, then we will be back to rain no doubt.

nespressowoo · 25/08/2019 19:33

It is fucking awful. Both DS and I are so miserable and DH is telling us to cheer up and enjoy the sun. Roll on winter.

PumpkinPie2016 · 25/08/2019 19:33

I'm not a huge lover of the sun/hot weather as I have very fair colouring and seem to feel very hot and sometimes quite faint. Even in cool clothes and with cold drinks.

Yesterday I was ok - went and did some shopping in the morning and then went to the neighbours for a BBQ. It was nice to be able to sit out in the evening and let the kids play.

I suffered during the night though - was absolutely boiling. Got up just after 6am as I couldn't sleep.

Today, we kept the curtains closed but Windows open and the house has remained fairly cool (it's an old house but well insulated) so it hasn't been too bad. I did venture into the garden but only in the shade.

That said, where I am, we have had a lot of rain/gloomy weather lately so it was nice to have some Sun for a change Sad

I do love Autumn though Grin

We’re in Inner London for a rare night away, I was worried the heat would spoil it but we’ve just adapted our plans. Cool couple of hours in a gallery, minimal walking (through parks and in the shade) and back to an air conditioned hotel room. We’ll carefully plan for tomorrow and probably get out and about early and then sit for brunch in the middle of the day.

Don’t go to the BBQ if you don’t want to, but you won’t be the only one feeling the heat, and someone else is doing the cooking!

ThreadKillerSleepsInACoil · 25/08/2019 19:50

@MrsPellegrino are you looking in my window? Grin

Just got back from work, 7 hrs on my feet in what can only be described as constant rush hour. Hot, sweaty, sticky, and sick of people saying how nice it is. Yes its nice for you, you spent the day on the beach!! not running around like a blue arsed fly!

almostautumn · 25/08/2019 20:05

Well dont worry you've got 7 months of pissing rain and cold coming up soon.

I can’t wait!! Grin

Don’t get me wrong - I love sunny skies and temperatures of 22/23C. In fact, 30C-plus is fine too, IF I’m on a beach or by a pool. But anything above 30C is just unbearable when in inner London - especially when coupled with the high humidity we get here.

I have to go to the bbq, as it’s good friends of ours and we accepted the invitation a couple of weeks ago. I’m just so worried about looking like a hot sweaty mess and people commenting! Blush

The only thing keeping me going is that this is hopefully the last weekend of crazy heat we get for a very long time - and thank goodness for that!!

Yes it’s hot but we managed a nice day in central London, the parks were shady and now I’m in my garden with a glass of rose. What’s not to love? I’m dreading the grey bleak drizzle we have to look forward to

almostautumn · 25/08/2019 20:13

What’s not to love?

Everything I outlined in my OP!

We also just had dinner outside but it was ruined by pesky flies - which seem to multiply instantly in the heat - that kept landing on the food Hmm Fortunately I managed to persuade DH to finish the meal indoors!

Please send it North! We’ve not had much summer in Scotland and are soon destined to cold, dreary dark mornings and nights.

almostautumn · 25/08/2019 20:15

Loving how it’s 8.15pm and already getting dark though - autumn is coming! Smile

Yeah, London in this weather is no fun. It’s been hot enough here in Norfolk, I think I’d melt if I were in a city!

We’ve kept the house fairly cool today by keeping all the doors and windows shut and all the curtains drawn, including door curtains. There was an appreciable difference in temperature when we came in from a morning out. It felt counter-intuitive to keep all the windows shut (even on the shady side of the house) but it really worked well.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 25/08/2019 20:19

I can hear my neighbours doing their drunken shouting as always happens with weather like this. Wish they would stfu.

PookieDo · 25/08/2019 20:37

I have a bad stomach so didn’t go out. Am so fed up with being hot indoors

Rinoa · 25/08/2019 20:39

I sympathise, we live in the top Flat attic and it's soool hot. But we bought an air con unit last year which has helped tremendously! BH still thoroughly enjoyed !

Sandsnake · 25/08/2019 20:43

It’s been bloody lovely here. Hot, but we’ve had a great day (helped by the cricket!) and it’s been so much nicer due to the wonderful weather. The last three or so weeks have felt more like autumn, so I think us summer lovers are due these days!

22Giraffes · 25/08/2019 20:46

I agree totally, London in this heat is awful. We have only left the house for a food shop today we but we are going out for a birthday meal tomorrow. I can't operate in this heat and it just makes the kids miserable, roll on Autumn!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 25/08/2019 20:47

I sympathise, OP. I also hate the hot weather. I am a bloody goth for a start, and I live in Cumbria. Today it has been 28°C here which is disgusting. I don't mind heat if it's dry, but UK heat is humid and sweaty. Bring on the autumn and winter! I enjoy line drying the washing and light mornings but everything else can fuck off.

DappledThings · 25/08/2019 20:54

It has been way too much today. But because it's larer in the year it does cool down at night at least.

It's been perfect summer for me this year. Rarely getting above 22 which is absolutely warm enough and with loads of intermittent cloud cover every day. So I've been getting tons of washing dry and been out on the beach all the time but not having to stress about suncream and hats on the DC.

All the rain has been confined to short but intense bursts of 2 days at a time so garden has had a good soaking too.

Last summer was utterly hideous and I am so relieved not to have had it repeated.

saaagp · 25/08/2019 20:59

Long, wet winters with a dog are a pain in the arse. I'm not pissing the muddy paw prints!
