To think this holiday allowance is out of date?

NC for this.
I’ve been offered a new job with a company that is well established with offices in global locations. They are offering me 20 days of holiday + bank holidays. I know this is the legal allowance but AIBU to expect a decent employer to offer more?
I think 23-25 is normal these days.

Often you'll start at that level and get more days over the years. Would that be the case?

QforCucumber · 25/08/2019 17:41

A lot of companies around here offer that -always seems to be the ones with mainly min wage staff and minimum pension contributions to.

Sarahisthatyou · 25/08/2019 17:41

That’s crap - I would t take a job with that. Ours starts at 25 and goes up to 30 after a few years.

drivingtofrance · 25/08/2019 17:42

Id say it's standard.

Bank Holidays are an extra 10/11 days?

Sexnotgender · 25/08/2019 17:42

That’s really low! I was a bit miffed to get 25+ bank holidays when I moved company. I had 30 in my old role.

Somerandompersons · 25/08/2019 17:43

That's what I get.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 25/08/2019 17:43

There’s 8 bank holidays not 11!

StillCoughingandLaughing · 25/08/2019 17:43

My friend is currently getting this from a very well-known company. However, it’s because she started off as a fixed-term contractor, so got less than permanent employees. She’s been told it will build up over time.

I personally get 25 days and have never been offered less.

SussexBonfireViking · 25/08/2019 17:44

what level are you? I was a bit unsure when my new company stated 20 days (+ bank hols), but they close over Christmas (so I was like,.... well 23 days that not too bad) but then they told me they close around the 20th for Christmas.... I'm quite happy with that

Bank holidays are normally 8 days per year

bridgetreilly · 25/08/2019 17:45

Yes, it's low. So you can either sign the contract at that level, ask for more, or walk away.

StoorieHoose · 25/08/2019 17:46

10 bank holidays in Scotland and 11 or 12 in NI

NChangingAgain · 25/08/2019 17:46

That's what DH gets - and yes it is crap! Means he has to be careful about what he takes when and I have more than him which feels a bit unfair!

It could be to do with it being global - perhaps the parent company is American as I think that's the standard there? Or seems to be linked to the US for my DH at least.

icelollycraving · 25/08/2019 17:47

It’s a bit low but quite standard. Bank holidays are built into my holiday entitlement and don’t get anything extra for working them. In my last role I got a day off in lieu and double pay. I miss those perks!

missbattenburg · 25/08/2019 17:49

Yep. It's low. I just started a job a year ago and got 24 days, rising to 25 this year and going up a day a year to 30.

This is with a company whose benefits (I think) are the low side of standard.

fromthefloorboardsup · 25/08/2019 17:50

That's what I get. I wish I got more! (I used to get 28+bank holidays so it was quite a drop to 20+ bank holidays!)

My boss always says there's no point putting it up as people don't use it Hmm

DelphiniumBlue · 25/08/2019 17:51

Beware the closing over Christmas trap: that's usually deducted from your leave entitlement.
OP, are you in a position to negotiate?
I have in the past managed to get an employer to agree an extra 2 weeks unpaid leave annually. I bet there's some discretion.

Bored40 · 25/08/2019 17:51

Depends on the industry. DH gets that and works for a global company, there's no increase. For them, the way their teams work on big projects it's very difficult for them to manage when people are off, so while they get other benefits the holiday is always minimum. 3 of those days they have to reserve for Xmas closed days too so in reality there's only 3 full weeks they can book a year. It's the same every company he's been in.

peachypetite · 25/08/2019 17:52

It's a bit stingy but I guess you'll have to decide how much you want the job

BikeRunSki · 25/08/2019 17:53

Do they have a Christmas close down where you don’t have to take leave?
DH gets 21 days, but they close at lunchtime on Christmas Eve and don’t open again until the Monday of the first full week in January, and this time off is in addition to holiday allowance.

Chloemol · 25/08/2019 18:41

Often companies offer the minimum and you gain more days the longer you work there. If you want more holidays find another job

RubyWho · 25/08/2019 18:43

That’s quite low. I have 35 days which is great but we have to take Xmas eve, Boxing Day, and the period after Xmas off as leave despite none of the buildings in the entire company being open.

plunkplunkfizz · 25/08/2019 18:46

Is it because it’s an international firm? Lots try to avoid fuss internally about huge discrepancies between territories by sticking to the legal minimum so they have a reason ready to hand.

NeverTwerkNaked · 25/08/2019 18:46

I think it varies wildly still.
I get 30 days plus bank holidays plus an extra shut down day at Christmas, but I do work in the public sector.

leghairdontcare · 25/08/2019 18:53

Assuming 8 bank holidays, they're giving you the legal minimum. Personally I would agree that the legal minimum is not what you'd expect from a decent employer. Is it echoed in other policies? Stat maternity pay, low pension contributions etc.

Verily1 · 25/08/2019 18:55

I get 24 plus 8 BH rising to 30 after 5 years

There’s also flexi time for extra days and tbh I couldn’t do it without those!
