To think this holiday allowance is out of date?

NC for this.
I’ve been offered a new job with a company that is well established with offices in global locations. They are offering me 20 days of holiday + bank holidays. I know this is the legal allowance but AIBU to expect a decent employer to offer more?
I think 23-25 is normal these days.

I only work Wednesday and Saturday, in retail, we only close Easter Sunday (Law) and Christmas day (tradition), as Christmas is on Wednesday this year I have to take a days annual leave!!!!

joystir59 · 25/08/2019 18:59

20 days plus 8 bank holidays is normal

PleaseGoogleIt · 25/08/2019 19:00

I wouldn't take a job with that.. minimum would be 25 for me.

I'm in the NHS so I get 27 - which raises to 33 in two years for me.

ThirdAidKit · 25/08/2019 19:03

NEGOTIATE THIS NOW.

It is low, and you have the most power you will have now.

MummytoCSJH · 25/08/2019 19:08

I got more than that in my first job and it was a slightly above min wage apprenticeship in a law firm. Ask for more!

Frazzled2207 · 25/08/2019 19:17

I would try and negotiate the same as what you currently get tbh. Most jobs I've had have been 25 with more given for long services

Lillagroda · 25/08/2019 19:19

I turned down a job because of a poor holiday allowance. They’d spent a lot of time at interview telling me how much they cared about their staff, then proceeded to offer legal minimum annual leave and no CSP. No thank you. They really struggled to understand that the salary wasn’t all that mattered to me, they kept telling me it was generous. National retailer, senior-ish role.

It is low, you should be able to negotiate. The lot I was dealing with agreed to an additional 5 days a year unpaid, but I didn’t really want to deal with that company culture by then.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/08/2019 19:21

But if that's their standard offering, why would they offer the OP more and won't the other employees be miffed if she gets more holidays than they do?

Employers aren't known for agreeing to requests like this just because someone asks.

Whether or not you take the job OP would depend on how good the other T&Cs and pay etc are and what the alternatives are. I'd struggle with so little holiday, as my entitlement is 41 days incl BHs but it's the sort of thing that balances out with quite low pay for what I do.

ChrisPrattsFace · 25/08/2019 19:42

I’m actually shocked at how many people wouldn’t accept a job with this.
Standard in my industry, 20 plus bank holidays.
My current work place increases an extra day for each year of service upto 25 days but that is NOT normal and quiet a bonus for the industry.

NameChangedForTheDay · 25/08/2019 20:37

That is stingey. I'm often swayed by things like Ann annual leave allowance and basic hours required of the job.

I'm lucky, my employer gives all staff 33 days, plus bank holidays and plus a Christmas close down on top. So it can be as much as 41 days in total. Oh and holiday van be carried over from the previous year.

catwithnohat · 25/08/2019 20:43

This wouldn't be a particular engineering consultancy would it Grin

It does go up (which you're probably well aware of).

Rtmhwales · 25/08/2019 20:49

I wish.
Moved back to Canada and we get ten plus bank holidays. It makes me weep for the U.K.

Pineapple1 · 25/08/2019 20:51

I get 11 weeks.. /boast

CherryPavlova · 25/08/2019 20:58

I think it’s mean. My husband gets 20 days plus bank holidays as under five years service. He gets two reading weeks though.
I get 44 days and can never use it all.

transformandriseup · 25/08/2019 21:20

I get 25 plus BH and it’s the only company I’ve worked for so far that does this.

namby · 25/08/2019 21:45

That's awful, genuinely didn't know places offered that low. 24/25 days rising to 30 has always been the minimum for me although the best I've had is 32 on starting, plus bank holidays on top. Not sure why someone thinks there are 11 bank holidays, are you civil service or related? I get 8 bank holidays (in a standard year) plus 4 privilege days.

Captaindobbin · 25/08/2019 22:10

I worked in accountancy practice and got 20 days plus bank holidays. Stat maternity pay and they only enrolled us in the pension scheme when it became the law that they had to! And even then got a letter to say that because they were having to do pension contributions there would be no pay rise this year.
20 days is rubbish and goes no where especially if you have kids and want to take odd days for assemblies and such like. Hopefully yours will increase with each year of service.

3boysandabump · 25/08/2019 22:12

My company offers that and has a compulsory shut down at Xmas which usually uses at least 7

CheeseyOnionPie · 25/08/2019 22:18

@catwithnohat it’s not engineering, no

OP posts:
GreyGardens88 · 25/08/2019 22:24

Mine is the same, and you have to use 3 at xmas so really only 17 through the year to take. I know it's the legal minimum but it's really stingy and backwards thinking, if you have a few more holiday days per year the motivation levels and staff retention levels must skyrocket. I'm only in this job for a couple of years, I would never stay anywhere really long term with so few holidays, feels like you're always at work

PinkiOcelot · 25/08/2019 22:36

@PleaseGoogleIt are you sure? I work at n the NHS and started on 27 days rising to 29 after 5 years and 33 after 10 years.

Really stingy that OP. I wouldn’t take the job personally.

CheeseyOnionPie · 25/08/2019 22:58

@GreyGardens88 completely agree. My current company offer 25 at my level, rising to 30 with promotions and length of service. What we find is that people often don’t use it all and can carry over a few days to the next year. I find it so backward thinking.

MillicentMartha · 25/08/2019 23:06

I’m glad I work in a school. I get 23 days plus bank holidays paid and 39 days unpaid, all of which must be taken in school holidays.
