To ask how do you clean your house?

Maybe it's because it's the holidays, but I can't keep on top of the housework (also, I'm lazy and would much rather play with the kids!).

I normally just concentrate on one room at a time and get that sorted, but then I run out of steam and never get through the whole house. I normally start in the same room and so it's the same rooms tgat get neglected at the end - although I started in the bedrooms today and gave them a good going over. It does mean that I've not cleaned the conservatory in weeks!

I was thinking about doing the same job in every room - so tidying every room first and then dusting every room ECT. But I feel like then I'd never actually get around to doing all the floors.

I suspect the easiest way would be to do a little every day, but that's far too sensible and when I go back to work, I'm too knackered to do anything but keep on top of the kitchen during the evenings!

Actually, maybe I should just work on improving my energy levels so I can finish the whole house in one go.

So, how do you do yours?

I follow the Organised Mum method - she has a blog but it is down at the moment but essentially it is 30 minutes in the same room on each day of the week and then Fridays consist of an 8 week rotation of more of a deep clean. This is as well as 15 minutes of daily tasks that are done every day.

Every day tasks - making bed, a wash load, a quick bathroom clean (I do one thing a day) and a quick hoover of the main living areas.

Then the weekly schedule is as follows:
Monday - living room
Tuesday - bedroom
Wednesday - hall, landing & stairs
Thursday - kitchen
Friday - deep clean (this week was living room).

Obviously it does need a bit of tweaking, for Example I do the dining room on Wednesdays too as we have a tiny hallway but since I have been following the method I have honestly seen such a massive difference in my house...and I was a bit of a lazy slattern before, every time my mum visits now she comments on how clean and tidy everything is!

EllenAshSky1 · 25/08/2019 14:19

I start with the kitchen and bathroom.
Blitz them .. .then I start in the living room getting the kids (4 and 3) to collect the toys and start cleaning their bedroom while I do the living room (I live in a flat. Their room is next door to my living room) once the living room is done I will mop the kitchen and living room.
Then I start on my room (opposite the kids room) while telling them what they should be tidying in their own room.
Once my bedroom is done I then move on to the hall... Once my bedroom and the hall are done I polish the living room, hall way and my room.
Then I'll Hoover the hall and my bedroom.

Then last is the kids room - what ever they haven't put away I do and then I'll make their beds and Hoover.

Then all done to start again the next day lol.
I do a big clean daily.
Through this tidying I will also be putting washing on- hanging washing and folding it and putting it away.

I don't like cleaning but my anxiety is through the roof if my flat isn't tidy and cleaned daily.
Also, once this is all done I do crafts with the kids or we can go play outside or go out, bake together and the flat is spotless so I only have to clean the mess we're then making.

My dad who I speak to daily says I'm crazy and should "just leave it it will still be there tmra"... no dad is will be 100 times worse tmra and will take longer lol.

I think everyone is so different when it comes to this. I would love to be abit more laid back but I just can't. It's stresses my head out! I like it a particular way or atleast close to it.. and my kids can trash a room within secounds !
I think as long as the place is clean tidying it can also wait. (I say after just tidying for the last 2 hours 😑😐)

I think it may come from growing up in a house i wish was more clean and organised.

Oysterbabe · 25/08/2019 14:20

I have a cleaner who does top to bottom once a fortnight. I try and clean as I go in between.

dollydaydream114 · 25/08/2019 14:21

We wait until things really need doing and then when we’ve got a bit of spare time and the inclination, usually at the weekend, we do them. There’s no system but generally we’d blitz one room at a time I think.

GiveMeHope103 · 25/08/2019 14:24

I'm not in the UK anymore so here we have cleaners that work full time. I have a lovely lady from mon-fri. House is spotless all the time. Weekends are just a 15min quick tidy.

YesQueen · 25/08/2019 14:24

I vaguely follow organised mum. Mostly by doing 30 mins a day on whatever needs doing
Although some days I do nothing except wash up
I find it's easier to clean things as soon as you spot they need doing! So if I walk past a shelf and think "god that's dusty" then I do it there and then

SilverySurfer · 25/08/2019 14:36

I'll ask my cleaner when she comes on Tuesday.

itbemay1 · 25/08/2019 14:40

I do a little each day. Wipe bathroom round and clean loo, Hoover every other day and push a wash on daily then once a month or longer I do a big clean starting upstairs and work my way down

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 25/08/2019 14:41

I agree the organised mum method is fantastic.

Im a Cleaner for a living so I generally attack my own home as if it’s a clients house, I do the same routine: kitchen, bathrooms, dusting upstairs, dusting downstairs, hoovering then mopping. If there are beds to be stripped I strip them first so the wash is ready to hand by the time I’ve finished cleaning.

But agree TOMM is a great way to keep on top of it all.

madcatladyforever · 25/08/2019 14:44

I sweep through the whole house alternating where I start so everywhere gets clean but I am a minimalist and live on my own with the cat so there isn't much mess.

Farcry66 · 25/08/2019 14:47

Okay! I'm going to look up the organised mum method! Kitchen is spotless so having a little break now. Got to decide whether to mow the lawn or do the living room next ..... decisions decisions!

I have a cleaner 3 hours a week and I do nothing in between except (barely) tidy up Blush

The house isn’t too clean but it’s not tooo bad...

Invisimamma · 25/08/2019 14:49

Daily tasks are a load of laundry (washed, dried, laid away), empty bins and empty/load the dishwasher, clear and wipe kitchen surfaces. This is the minimum that gets done each day. Some days I might give the bathroom and quick wipe down or quick hoover downstairs.

Once a week we will dust whole house, hoover everywhere, properly clean the bathroom, wash kitchen floor, hoover couches and turn the cushions. It takes about 3hours to to full house.

Less often I will do jobs like change beds, clean inside windows, oven, fridge etc. House isn't spotless but it's pretty tidy. It's just about getting yourself in a good routine.

MrsRedFly · 25/08/2019 14:50

My DC are cleaning just now! (Age 12)

Very unusual!

joystir59 · 25/08/2019 14:50

Do what?

Whitney168 · 25/08/2019 14:51

Rarely and half-heartedly.

I need a new cleaner, I sacked the last one for being flakey and haven't got round to replacing her yet - things are getting out of hand.

madeyemoodysmum · 25/08/2019 14:53

I Either do entire house in 4/5 hours.
This will include laundry sorting and washing washing floors etc.

If times tight I’ll do upstairs one day downstairs the next as then it takes 2 hours ish

However I struggle in holidays too when routines out the window so I’m thinking I’m may not bother next week apart from bathroom and floors and do a mega clean once my kids are back at school.

I also work park time so that does help as I can do it when I’m on my own in day and then it’s much quicker as no interruptions

joolzfromyork · 25/08/2019 15:20

What is this 'House Cleaning' please ?

(I subscribe to the Quentin Crisp method of cleaning ...)

Titsywoo · 25/08/2019 15:31

I work part-time so it's easier for me but I have one cleaning day a week and I start at the top and work down, one room at a time (tidying, washing away, dusting, wiping down woodwork, cleaning windows and hoovering). It's a large 3 bed house and it takes me about 7-8 hours. Through the rest of the week I keep on top of washing and dishes and tidy a bit but mainly do this one intensive day

soreknees · 25/08/2019 15:39

I need to get back into TOMM! As sad as it sounds it was life changing for me.

Snowflake9 · 25/08/2019 15:41

Daily -

bathrooms quick wipe over and toilet gel
Kitchen - wipe down after dinner, disinfect sink
Living room - tidy
Bedroom - make beds, gather laundry and out wash on.

Twice a week - hoover and polish downstairs - change hand towels and pillow cases

Once a week - start at the top.of the house and do one room at a time, strip beds and wash bed linens, bath mats. I dust all light fittings and skirting boards every week.

I always set myself little timers, so 30 mins to do this. Or 30 mins to do that. What can I be doing whilst I am waiting for kettle, or toaster etc.

I have to really motivate myself. We all get the same amount of hours in a day, how can I be the most productive?

Skittlenommer · 25/08/2019 15:57

I don’t I hired a housekeeper! Grin

FaithInfinity · 25/08/2019 16:10

Organised Mum here too since my cleaner upped her prices! We were following loosely but we did a big tidy last weekend and now I have the app it’s a total game changer and I feel on top of things! Grin

Jamhandprints · 25/08/2019 16:14

First thing, unload dishwasher, empty dryer, load dryer (or hang out) put wash on.
Clear breakfast stuff including sweep floor and wipe table/ highchair and sides (messy toddler).
Tidy lounge, sweep/Hoover wipe down doors, handles and light switches in all downstairs (see user name)
Put laundry away (I never get this far).
This all takes between 1 and 2 hours.
Toilets and sinks every 2 days. Wash floors every 2-3 days.
Upstairs tidy every day, upstairs clean/hoover once a month if ever.
10 hours a day follow DSs round picking up stuff, wiping doors walls and sweeping.
I need a cleaner full time. :-(

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 25/08/2019 16:26

If everything has a home and you are quite minimal it’s much easier.

I do the bathroom and kitchen before I leave for work and then the living area and bedrooms when home if needed. In the hols, I spend an hour in the morning blitzing through so it’s done for the day.

I hate mess and dirt though so couldn’t not do daily.
