I am having my mirena coil out in four weeks. I am really nervous that I’m going to bleed heavy for weeks on end. Is this the case?

OP posts:
Elclr · 25/08/2019 11:58

No issues. Didn't hurt and my periods returned to normal a few weeks later.

I know it's not the same for everyone...but I was absolutely fine Smile

LemonAddict · 25/08/2019 12:00

I had the copper coil taken out earlier this year. Took less than a minute, I wore a panty-liner for the rest of the day, no pain, a bit of spotting, I was fine the next day.

I realise the Mirena is different and I think the removal of hormones might trigger a period.

But the actual removal procedure - was fine for me.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 25/08/2019 12:00

I found it painful and i bled a lot initially

But

Neither the pain or bleeding lasted more than the rest of the day

Pardonwhat · 25/08/2019 12:00

I accidentally removed mine last year (don’t ask). It was a ‘tug’- quite uncomfortable. Quite a lot of blood initially (but I was stood up). I took 2 paracetamols and I was fine. I didn’t bleed further. It’s fine honestly Smile

TheQueef · 25/08/2019 12:00

I've had mine out last week at the hospital.
Being blunt.
It felt like he was pulling it from my nose, painful but fast and unobtrusive.
Didn't bleed for two days but have had heavy, smelly bleeding since Sad plus contraction like pains in my back and hips.
Also clots and winnits and stringy bits Blush

FizzBuzzBangWoof · 25/08/2019 12:04

I'm on my third now so have had 2 removed

First removal was v unpleasant. So painful that I couldn't go ahead with having the replacement put in at the same appointment and ended up going back a month or so later instead.

Second removal, for which I was very nervous after first experience was completely pain-free and straightforward!

Same GP at both appointments (a very experienced female GP who specialises in coils) so I'd like to think my first experience was just bad luck and not the norm

VioletCharlotte · 25/08/2019 12:06

I've had 2 removed, no issues at all. I felt a sharp pain, like a period pain, then a bit of light spotting through the day. Try and relax as much as you can beforehand and don't get too anxious. Like anything, the more stressed you are, the more uncomfortable it'll be as your body will be tense. Maybe try some Calms if you're feeling nervous.

Nautiloid · 25/08/2019 12:07

I hated having mine in, and was terrified of the removal...it was quick and not painful at all. Everything went back to normal straight away.

ElizaPancakes · 25/08/2019 12:10

My removal was quick and a tiny little pinch. I forgot to take a pad tho, make sure you do because you will bleed. Not for weeks tho.

QueenofmyPrinces · 25/08/2019 12:20

First time: unbelievably painful but that was only because my strings were missing so I had to have it removed by a gynaecologist involving a very unpleasant procedure.

Second time: was out in about 3 seconds, completely pain free and I don’t remember any bleeding.

Northernsoullover · 25/08/2019 12:20

Damn sight easier than going in! Painless and quick.

MummyLikesCrisps · 25/08/2019 12:22

I pulled mine out last year (stupid prolapse!!) and the only reason I knew was I heard it 'tink' against the loo pan!

Thebearsbunny · 25/08/2019 12:26

I had my mirena coil removed a couple of months ago. I was very nervous as having it inserted was very painful. I honestly didn’t feel a thing and was shocked when the nurse held it up for me to see. I had slight spotting after which was easily dealt with using a panty liner. I’m post menopausal so no further bleeding.

Izzabellasasperella · 25/08/2019 12:35

Can I just hijack the thread for a moment. I was wondering whether I should have my copper coil removed? It's not causing me any issues and I'm through the menopause(well no periods for over a year) It has been in for 16 years though!

fiftyandfat · 25/08/2019 12:37

Much easier than going in.

PhonicTheHedgehog · 25/08/2019 12:42

I can’t remember sonit must have been fine. I think I probably took paracetamol before hand.

Felt so much better than having it in which was just awful. Not put in, that was fine, just in!

Well done to getting someone to agree to take it out. That was the difficult part for me.

Bunnybaubles · 25/08/2019 12:44

Had the marina coil taken out years ago. Took quite a while for the doctor to find the threads, then a very hard tug to get it out. I wasnt prepared for how painful it was and couldnt stop shaking. Apparently it had grown into the lining of my uterus. If the GP forgot to tell you , remember and eat plenty painkillers 30 minutes before your appointment.

Loved the marina tho so it didnt stop me getting a new one put in Grin

Also never had any heavy periods straight after, they gradually came back as they had completely stopped.

SconeofDestiny · 25/08/2019 12:52

I've had mine in 7 years and in my mid fifties. I'm also worried that the womb lining has grown around it so it won't come out. How long has yours been in OP and will you be replacing it?

envelopeofpubes · 25/08/2019 12:58

izza I think I remember reading somewhere that they don’t bother taking them out anymore if you’re through menopause.

TheDarkPassenger · 25/08/2019 13:15

I took my own out and passed out. Then I was fine and everything went back to normal within a few days

Izzabellasasperella · 25/08/2019 13:22

envelopeofpubes Thanks. I didn't fancy having it taken out, it's probably welded in there by now😊

Densol999 · 25/08/2019 13:34

I whipped out my copper coil myself. Id already had one taken out by a GP years ago so I knew it was a couple of seconds job. I pulled firmly on the string and it came straight out. The copper coil made me smell terrible before every period - yuck
Moment that disgusting thing was out, never smelt since

MulticolourMophead · 25/08/2019 13:43

Izzabellasasperella My doctor says they like to remove them after 10 years anyway, and I was given the advice below (from a leaflet):

If you are close to the menopause

If your IUD was fitted at or after the age of 40, it can be relied upon for contraception until you reach the menopause. It is recommended that you have your IUD removed after you have reached the menopause. It should be removed:
• 2 years after your periods have stopped, if this happens before you turn 50
• 1 year after your periods have stopped, if this happens when or after you turn 50.

OP, I barely noticed the removal of the Mirena coils I had before I had a copper coil, and I'll have this copper coil removed once I've done my one year without periods.

Toneitdown · 25/08/2019 13:43

Having it taken out is so much easier than having it put in. I barely felt it. Periods went back to normal very quickly. Didn't have any excessive bleeding.

Izzabellasasperella · 25/08/2019 13:46

Well I'm hoping to see the practice nurse next week for a separate issue so I'll ask then.
