I have been really stupid, new car

Not really an AIBU but need to vent. I am currently on a personal contact hire lease for my car which is coming near the end of contract. The car went in for a service last week and the dealer asked me if I wanted to pop in for a "chat" afterwards. Now I know this was a v bad idea as they only ever want to flog you another new car and I couldn't really afford it. Work had spoken to me about doing some extra hours so possibly more money in future but nothing confirmed. Anyway, I thought I would just go for the chat with car dealer which was utter stupidity in itself. I have ended up signing an order form for a new car for September, I don't want the car anymore, but don't think I can cancel as signed the agreement on dealers premises. Also work have now said the extra hours won't be possible after all Sad. Has anybody been in a similar situation and managed to get out of it? I know I've been a massive twerp.

If you have not already sorted this please - before you rush in - get some advice from [say] Citizens Advice. The legal situation is complex and you should not simply accept anything you are told [for instance from the garage]. You "may" have breached the contact to buy but that does not mean that you need to pay the full price. The garage may be able to sue for their losses. Legally you might argue that they have not lost anything - they have the car. But they will be horrendously dissapointed.

Do please update us [if you have not] @OldGrinch

Why the fuck did you email them?

Everyone told you to ring. Had you rung up the day after or gone in in person then this would have been so much easier, im sure there would have been no problems. Now you've left it so long, and it could be so much harder.

I hope you get this sorted but if not it's massive lesson in learning to he less passive

I have rung them today and been told that all the sales people are in a meeting and someone will call me back. I also rang CAB and they said that the dealer can take me to small claims court and sue for their costs so really frightening. Now feeling horrible waiting for them to come out of meeting and ring me back. What a mess, and definitely should have sorted it soonerSad

@VictoriaBun thanks for that a cooling off period is a really good idea. I'm going to make myself have a 24 hour cooling off period for any purchases over £50 in the future Smile Hopefully I won't get into a mess like this ever again

OP just send an email now to say you've tried a few times to get through via email and phone and that you will assume their lack of response is because they have cancelled your order and dont need to discuss it further.

Just to cover yourself in case they dont get back to you and only phone you to say your car has arrived!

Todaythiscouldbe · 02/09/2019 17:02

You need to phone every hour, don't wait for them to call you back. It's very unlikely all the sales people are in a meeting for any length of time, they want to sell!

Rivkka · 02/09/2019 17:26

Phone them back. They won't all still be in a meeting and you'll feel much better once you've done it. Good luck.

KitKat1985 · 02/09/2019 20:34

Did they phone you back OldGrinch?

Did this get sorted?

I got a car on finance, signed all paperwork etc yesterday, all done online, didn't go to view the car. Last night my partners brother offered him his old car instead of getting the new one.

New one getting delivered today, phoned first thing to pull out of agreement, dealer said not possible, finance had been arranged and the car and tax now in my name, she delivered the car this afternoon. My partner says I should be covered by 14 day cooling off period and to phone finance company tomorrow, is he right? Thanks
