I have been really stupid, new car

Not really an AIBU but need to vent. I am currently on a personal contact hire lease for my car which is coming near the end of contract. The car went in for a service last week and the dealer asked me if I wanted to pop in for a "chat" afterwards. Now I know this was a v bad idea as they only ever want to flog you another new car and I couldn't really afford it. Work had spoken to me about doing some extra hours so possibly more money in future but nothing confirmed. Anyway, I thought I would just go for the chat with car dealer which was utter stupidity in itself. I have ended up signing an order form for a new car for September, I don't want the car anymore, but don't think I can cancel as signed the agreement on dealers premises. Also work have now said the extra hours won't be possible after all Sad. Has anybody been in a similar situation and managed to get out of it? I know I've been a massive twerp.

What should I say?

Just say you're cancelling. You don't have to explain yourself.

thenightsky · 25/08/2019 15:13

Don't go in there if it makes you more nervous... just deal with them on the phone.

leghairdontcare · 25/08/2019 15:30

Don't go in again, you'll probably buy two cars.

PorterBella · 25/08/2019 15:46

Phone them, op and in your head act as if you're doing it for
someone else whose life depends on cancelling it.
You can do this.

BubblesBubbly · 25/08/2019 15:48

Ooh I hate situations like this op. To the point where I mainly shop online! Just walking in to a car sales garage would be stressful as I know they’d make a beeline

BubblesBubbly · 25/08/2019 15:48

🤣 @leghairdontcare

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/08/2019 15:49

Just say the truth. A change of job circumstances has meant that it's no longer affordable so you'll need to cancel the order for the new car but you are hoping to do a deal on keeping the one you currently have . I'd also add that you've been really pleased with the service and are hoping to be back at some point for a new car when the job situation resolves itself.

gingersausage · 25/08/2019 15:55

Why does the same thing always happen on these threads, whereby people are so eager to get their point across, they don’t bother to read the previous posts, and see that 30 other people have already stated the exact same thing. It's a fascinating sociological insight. It wouldn’t be so bad if the repetitive answers were actually correct!

Rivkka · 25/08/2019 16:00

Phone them up if you don't want to go in

ChicCroissant · 25/08/2019 16:02

Send a recorded letter (or whatever the current Royal Mail term for that is, registered, special delivery) if you don't want to speak to them but don't just do nothing. Only you can sort this out.

Jazzmin · 25/08/2019 16:04

My garage did this to me, I said no but to be fair, it is high pressure and they can be sharks. I now go elsewhere for my car service so they have lost my custom!

NoddyAndBessie · 25/08/2019 16:05

If there's no dipper, then just cancel. If you had left one, they'd be well within their rights to retain it.

Have you signed a finance agreement yet?

Azeema · 25/08/2019 16:07

It just order. You can cancel. Only if you drive new car off lot are you stuck.

itiswhatitis12 · 25/08/2019 16:17

@gingersausage because we don't always have time to read it all.
If it's not useful, just scroll past.
No harm done!

AlexaAmbidextra · 25/08/2019 16:20

Worst case say you felt pressured and put on the spot and you dont want to have to escalate a complaint as mis selling so can they just cancel it. Bit harsh on the salesman but if it gets it cancelled and he doesn't actually get into any trouble then needs must.

No don’t try to lay the blame on someone else for your stupidity. It’s a shitty thing to do.

KitKat1985 · 25/08/2019 16:21

Can you get someone to go with you if you aren't feeling very assertive?

MaeveDidIt · 25/08/2019 16:24

I would go in and cancel - you won't be the first and you certainly won't be the last. The stupid thing would be to go through with it because you're embarrassed about it.
If you do phone them, ask them for their email address so that you also put it in writing, and equally they MUST also confirm the cancellation back to you via email.

AlexaAmbidextra · 25/08/2019 16:26

you did not initiate this, they asked you to go in

Yes, they asked her to go in. The salesman didn’t come to her house and frogmarch her to the showroom where he imprisoned her and wouldn’t let her leave until she signed the order form. When will people stop infantilising women by making everything they do wrong someone else’s fault. She’s a grown woman ffs. She could have said no.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/08/2019 16:29

14 Day Change of Mind for Distance Selling does not apply for bespoke .

I found this out after my DParents had dealings with a company that came round the house , sent a salesperson at an arranged time (so not Cold Calling) but basically didn't leave for over 3 hours and did all the "Special Discount if you sign today/ because you're over 65yo" routine .

I don't know if there was any co-ercion, I wasn't there but you can see from the house they are elderly (not ageist but there are signs to look for) .
The Customer Services were aggressive to me ( I know I couldn't do anything because it was not my name on the contract) but informed me the Change of Mind is 7 days for bespoke . (Which I have no idea if these were , they are standard size products , no special adjustments made )

Anyway , back to the car ..........yes ask if you can cancel. It must be easier at this stage than a few months down the line

StudentHelp · 25/08/2019 16:38

Hope you get it sorted, OP

Deadsetgo · 25/08/2019 16:41

Can’t believe some people are blaming the sales person. It’s the OPs fault, no one else’s

OldGrinch · 25/08/2019 16:45

I am going to email them tomorrow morning to cancel and ask for email acknowledgement. I will try to avoid going in if humanly possible. It's totally my own stupid fault Biscuit to myself

Just quickly ring up and tell them you've changed your mind because you actually cannot afford it.
