To bicker childishly over the temperature of chocolate

Oh wise people, please help me settle a long running dispute.

My husband and I bicker (lightheartedly) a lot over chocolate.

I eat mine at room temperature. I delight in the thrill of it melting in my mouth and putting it in the fridge disrupts this.

I end up with cold unyielding crunchy chocolate that I'm too impatient to warm in my mouth before that 'ahhh' moment.

My husband insists on eating all chocolate after it's been cooled in the fridge. If he buys me a bar I have to rescue it to bring it up to room temperature before I can enjoy it.

My only exception is soft caramel. I prefer these firm and will just have to accept the chocolate coating will spoil.

AIBU to want to eat my chocolate at room temperature and tell him refrigerated chocolate is just wrong.

DH puts his in the fridge. It comes from when we lived in a flat that was so bloody hot one summer that some chocolate I had bought melted on the side and turned into a chocolate water balloon. 5 years later he hasn't recovered!

GloriousMystery · 25/08/2019 02:10

The fridge kills the taste and wrecks the texture.

NeverHadANickname · 25/08/2019 02:12

YANBU, definitely room temperature chocolate. My Mam likes fridge chocolate and I was always excited when she said she had bought me a bar and then disappointed when I realised she had put it in the fridge.

Yeahnahmum · 25/08/2019 02:32

I am with your dh 😊

HalfManHalfLabrador · 25/08/2019 03:03

Cold chocolate is just WRONG

NotWavingButMNing · 25/08/2019 04:06

I could eat my own body weight in chocolate from the fridge. If it's not chilled I would never touch it.

Oysterbabe · 25/08/2019 04:09

My husband is the same as yours m, I. E. Wrong.

bonnielassie1 · 25/08/2019 04:36

I live in the Caribbean so anything room temp is practically melted! Fridge/freezer for me!

WhyBirdStop · 25/08/2019 04:37

I worked for a chocolatier when younger, room temperature is correct for it to have the correct melt and mouthfeel, there's also the risk of the cocoa solids and dairy seperating if it gets too cold or warm, so YANBU.

However that is for good quality chocolate, high percentage cocoa, the only fat used would be cocoa butter, no Palm oil or hydrogenated vegetable fat etc (that's what gives bad chocolate that chewy, waxiness). So if you're arguing about dairy milk and Mars bars YABU, it's awful wherever you keep it .

OrangeSwoosh · 25/08/2019 04:41

You're all being unreasonable. The best temperature is pocket temperature. Not so that it's totally melted, but so that it bends rather than snaps 🤤

Triskaidekaphilia · 25/08/2019 04:42

DH (and PIL) do this. It does ruin decent chocolate but can be nice on occasion if it's poor quality chocolate especially in summer.

20viona · 25/08/2019 05:25

I hate fridge chocolate too!

theorchidwhisperer · 25/08/2019 07:30

Thank you for all your replies, you have made me chuckle this morning.

@WhyBirdStop that's really interesting, I knew something along these lines but couldn't find it to show DH.

DH and I are the same (though I don't think we've ever argued over it). His chocolate goes in the fridge, mine stays out.

Ponoka7 · 25/08/2019 08:03

Room temperature, or it would be pointless dipping it into my cup of tea.

I only eat good chocolate, Lidl's orange bubble bar, or Lint's orange chocolate which is gooey to sart with.

Drogosnextwife · 25/08/2019 08:12

My dp tried to do this for a while after he moved in. There were heated words, he no longer put chocolate in the fridge.

Drogosnextwife · 25/08/2019 08:14

To be fair to him, that what his mother did. I had to retrain him with a lot of things when I took him in.

keepingbees · 25/08/2019 08:23

Me and my DH have this exact same bicker!
He puts all chocolate in the fridge. Fridge chocolate = cold, hard tasteless chocolate.
I like room temp, creamy and melty.

All these posts about frozen chocolate, never heard of that! Do you eat it frozen?

Oysterbabe · 25/08/2019 08:26

You need the oil to melt and coat your tongue to get the most from the flavours. If its cold then it's doesn't taste nearly as nice.

Chitarra · 25/08/2019 08:28

Team room temp here

Toothproblems · 25/08/2019 08:30

Why do people put it in the freezer? How would you eat it? I'm a room temp girl here. So is DH.

CookPassBabtridge · 25/08/2019 08:30

DP loves it fridged, I love it from the cupboard. It doesn't taste of anything to me when its cold. But no need to bicker, just do what you want!

user1493494961 · 25/08/2019 08:35

Well it's obvious you both need a separate chocolate stash. (I'm room temperature and DH is fridge).

Howzaboutye · 25/08/2019 08:43

Buy two bars.
Problem solved!
