To think that the Danish prime minister was too quick to refuse to sell Greenland?

I mean, obviously she was never going to sell it, I'm not sure it would even be possible without some sort of referendum of Greenlanders, but she could at least have asked a load of probing questions first. Was Trump planning to make all the Greenlanders into American citizens, or just the white ones? Does he even know that it's populated, or does he think it's just a vast emptiness? Was he planning to add Greenlandic or Danish to the official languages of America or just make them all learn enough English to do their taxes and be able to read an official letter confiscating their homes and lands? Was he going to make it another state like Alaska and Hawaii, or just own it but not give the people any representation in government like Puerto Rico and Guam? Did his advisors suggest he ask to buy it, or was it just a whim, like fancying an iced doughnut or a new wife?

Lol

S1naidSucks · 24/08/2019 23:08

I was coming on to tell you to fuck off, but the thought of the orange twat having to answer those questions is quite funny. 😁

CendrillonSings · 24/08/2019 23:12

If he offered the 56,000 Greenlanders a million dollars each (plus US citzenship), would they really say no?

I imagine a referendum under those conditions would yield a 70%+ vote in favour...

noodlenosefraggle · 24/08/2019 23:14

I was thinking she could have asked for swapsies for Hawaii or Alaska Grin. A whole world of fun could have been had, but I agree, she took the boring, stateswomanlike option Grin

S1naidSucks · 24/08/2019 23:15

I wouldn’t sell my soul, my rights and my citizenship, or more importantly my children’s citizenships, for 2 million, let alone one.

jlgsy94 · 24/08/2019 23:16

Why should she have asked multiple different questions? Bearing in mind she's dealing with Donald Trump and his at times childish nature, it would have led him to think he'd be in with a shot of purchasing Greenland, sort of like "but you said!...."

How about he offered to purchase the UK, how would you feel then? .. Yes I'm Danish.

CendrillonSings · 24/08/2019 23:19

Pshaw. I think you’d be in a minority if it came to an actual vote, with a real offer on the table.

Sparklesocks · 24/08/2019 23:20

I don’t think she had to humour him anymore than a swift no

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 24/08/2019 23:20

I'm not British (well, I am but I only use my other nationality), so I think I would manage to remain surprisingly calm if he offered buy the UK. Grin The way the British have been voting over the past few years they would probably even agree to it if offered a referendum on it.

I also don't think that Greenlanders would agree to sell for any money. Not least because Trump is famously poor at actually paying up and has bankrupted plenty of small business by buying their services and then simply refusing to pay the invoices, knowing that they can't afford to take him to court.

I’ve walked away from a huge inheritance because I value my self respect more and you shouldn’t assume that everyone can be bought. Maybe the fact that I’m from NI gives me a different perspective on the value of citizenship.

lilyfire · 24/08/2019 23:25

I think he’s thinking about his legacy and acquiring real estate is something he understands - unlike politics. I guess he heard that President Jackson bought Alaska and didn’t see why he couldn’t do similar.
Maybe we could offer to sell him the Brexit voting parts of UK - they might like being properly out of Europe.

S1naidSucks · 24/08/2019 23:25

jlgsy94 I think the OP was trying to be humorous and wasn’t suggesting that the Danish PM would actually consider selling Greenland.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 24/08/2019 23:36

Yes, obviously there was no way that Greenland would ever be sold. I mean, you wouldn't even sell a puppy to Trump let alone a whole country with a delicate ecology and a population without the financial or legal means to stand up to a bully.

I would just like to know what was going through his mind. I mean who announces to the world press that they intend to buy a whole country without even getting their ambassador to the country to have a quiet word first?

I think the thing that would have grated me even more is when he just said it was just another real estate/land purchasing deal (words to that effect) It was the old trick of going into attack as a method of attack - he was obscenely ignorant himself & the Danish Prime Minster was statesmen like in her response - how would he have responded to a comment of that ilk?

Songsofexperience · 24/08/2019 23:51

How about he offered to purchase the UK, how would you feel then?

Isn't it what no deal brexit is all about? Asset stripping the uk? the great british fire sale?
But we won't get any 'rights' for it.

Songsofexperience · 24/08/2019 23:54

Although almost independent Greenland is still part of Denmark and associated with the EU (though not in it). It has huge strategic significance (geography, natural resources). I think this whole thing is Trump trolling the EU on a massive scale.

Themutts · 24/08/2019 23:55

Some crazy bullshit on this thread. If you are one of the PPs that woukd sell their citizenship and that of their children for a crappy $ million then read up a bit more. What Europeans have at the moment is worth more than this.
It's not normal or ok to announce you might buy a country Hmm

Nothingcomesforfree · 25/08/2019 00:01

I think offering to buy it is better than just going in and trying to take it. Argentina never offered us a penny for the Falklands.

noodlenosefraggle · 25/08/2019 00:03

I don't think ( I hope) anyone thought buying Greenland was ever going to be taken seriously. As usual with Trump, he's said something outrageous to distract from something dodgy going down in the US or to get himself out of something. I think he was trying to distract his more dimwitted supporters from his gun law speech by insulting another country and using their completely understandable outrage as an attack on America, when really it's an attack on one particularly stupid American.

TrainspottingWelsh · 25/08/2019 00:15

Tbf to the tangerine twat, I think he did really well to remember which president to ask. I think she should have said he could have it provided he could point to it on an unlabelled map. He probably thinks Greenland is the correct name for Iceland during the warmer months.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 25/08/2019 00:17

Grin at pointing to it on an unlabelled map.

tempester28 · 25/08/2019 00:20

Well I think Trump is not the only one wanting to buy Greenland. I think Russia and China would jump at the chance.

Gooigi · 25/08/2019 00:23

I'm not sure a million dollars is worth going into the American healthcare system.

TemporaryPermanent · 25/08/2019 00:23

Maybe Putin could consider buying the USA?

Oh actually, why bother paying....
