To just loathe the phrase ‘enjoy!’

You say you are doing something really fun or interesting and the someone’s response is ‘enjoy!’. I know AIBU but it still feels like someone is giving you permission to ‘enjoy’ something they have had no input on. What gets your goat in an irrational way?

OP posts:
AnneLovesGilbert · 24/08/2019 17:48

I like it and say it. It’s like have fun. Not giving permission but a wish that they have a good time. What do you want them to say? Don’t enjoy?

humblesims · 24/08/2019 17:49

I hate it too. Hate it!!

WorraLiberty · 24/08/2019 17:50

I know what you mean OP. 'Enjoy' always sounds like they're inner Italian chef is trying to escape Grin

I loathe 'Can I get' when people are ordering/buying something.

WorraLiberty · 24/08/2019 17:50

*their

Newgirls · 24/08/2019 17:53

Me too - at the end of so many recipes. Overused

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/08/2019 18:02

I loathe 'Can I get' when people are ordering/buying something.

Also “I’m gonna grab xxx”

Don’t go around grabbing stuff!

MuseThalia · 24/08/2019 18:03

Me too, especially when said to me by a temp consultant after being told by the consultant I had been with throughout pregnancy (who had wanted me to be induced due to health problems) that he didn't agree with inducing me and that I should 'enjoy' the rest of my pregnancy (in really bad pain and unable to walk). She was born a couple of weeks after though (my leg dislocated when having her ouch)

Els1e · 24/08/2019 18:30

I like it. I think it sounds like I am being encouraged.

Namechangeymcnamechange11 · 24/08/2019 18:43

'can I get'
Pacifically =/= specifically

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/08/2019 18:48

Oh and the other one that’s on here all the time on here at the moment is the misuse of “ignorant”. It does not and has never meant ignoring people Hmm

TipTopAllOverTheShop · 24/08/2019 18:52

YABU they could have said 'oh right'... And then you'd be moaning they sounded pissed off! Your probs my friend as I've just WhatsApped her recently saying exactly this.... Maybe I'll just not respond next time?! 🤣

geekone · 24/08/2019 18:52

Enjoy is a word not a phrase.

Also now we are nit picking when someone says something nice to us. ? The world is a shitty place when we can’t take someone’s good wishes in the spirit intended Angry.

Derektheelf · 24/08/2019 18:57

Oh no! I have just committed this crime! I recommended a restaurant to a friend and they are sending me sitting, reading menu selfies, so I said "Enjoy! Let me know what you think" I didn't realise it was awful Confused

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 24/08/2019 19:01

I hate 'enjoy' - makes me cringe. Why not 'enjoy your breakfast/lunch/dinner' or 'I hope you like your meal' or even ' bon appetit'? Everything has to be dumbed down these days.

WitheredfromtheLake · 24/08/2019 19:12

"Enjoy!" on its own is particularly irritating because it's a transitive verb (ie it needs an object to express a complete thought).

To be accurate, one enjoys "something", eg.

"Enjoy yourself!"
"Enjoy your dinner!"
"Enjoy the dance!"

I mention this because many of my ESL students would write something like, "They went to the park and they enjoyed," which doesn't sound quite right!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 24/08/2019 19:14

I love it!

HelloMrDinosaur · 24/08/2019 19:16

Jesus H Christ 🤦🏻‍♀️

HollowTalk · 24/08/2019 19:21

Shock Shock Shock

HollowTalk · 24/08/2019 19:22

@WitheredfromtheLake "Enjoy!" on its own is particularly irritating because it's a transitive verb (ie it needs an object to express a complete thought).

Exactly! "Enjoy what?" is always my (often silent) response.

Steala · 24/08/2019 19:23

I hate, when I get to the front of the queue to be served (eg coffee shop) and they ask me "Are you alright?" It feels rude to ignore the question and launch into my order but when I feel compelled to answer it, I end up saying totally awakened things like "yes, thank you but please can I have...?" Why can't they just say "What can I get you?" Or "How can I help you?"

Sparklingbrook · 24/08/2019 19:23

I don't really like it when being served food. Maybe I won't enjoy it, I haven't tried it yet. Hmm

Gone2far · 24/08/2019 19:44

Can I add in something that's starting to bug me?
Being called 'guy' by serving staff. As in 'what would you guys like?' Or 'I'll put you guys there'. I'm not a guy. I'm a 62 year old woman. And I don't think my 66 year old husband should be addressed as a guy either.

ButDoYouAvocado · 24/08/2019 19:49

I think it's a bit thoughtless as in they couldn't be bothered to expand but it's well meant.

Oysterbabe · 24/08/2019 19:49

They're just shortening 'I hope you enjoy it'

ButDoYouAvocado · 24/08/2019 19:49

OH BUT DO NOT CALL ME GUY
