To just loathe the phrase ‘enjoy!’

You say you are doing something really fun or interesting and the someone’s response is ‘enjoy!’. I know AIBU but it still feels like someone is giving you permission to ‘enjoy’ something they have had no input on. What gets your goat in an irrational way?

Who says that this is "the worst thing I've got to worry about" anyway? It's just one thing of many for me. Not at the top of the list or anything, but on the list nonetheless. If we were only allowed to complain about things that are genuinely devastating, AIBU wouldn't exist and there would be a lot of suppressed frustration in the world.

Sammi38 · 24/08/2019 22:19

When someone says biking or biked. ‘My ds bikes to school’ etc... whatever happened to good old fashioned ‘cycling’? So annoying!!

And ‘pack up’ instead of packed lunch. Where did that saying even come from?

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/08/2019 22:45

They literally mean someone ignored them @AbsentmindedWoman and it’s catching on here which is giving me hives. “SIL is so ignorant, she never says hello when I see her, she ignores me” Angry

feistymumma · 24/08/2019 22:59

The worst has got to be 'I will / have reach/reached out to. Wtaf

hardheadedwoman · 24/08/2019 23:10

Irrationally I don’t like ‘go with care’ as a goodbye. Like I am incapable of travelling around on my own!

Monestasi · 24/08/2019 23:29

These posts intrigue me. I also wonder if those who start them, and contribute, are monolingual.

Language is beautiful, and ever evolving... Sure, bad grammar can grate but I couldn't get so worked up about it, especially as I make mistakes all the time in my second and third languages. Most people are just trying their best.

To start a thread over the loathing of a WORD (it isn't a phrase) where the chances of intended audience using it is high, is a dickish thing to do.

Just makes you look like a twat, rather than a concerned English language user.

ACPC · 24/08/2019 23:37

Gonna and wanna really irritate me. It's irrational of course but I can't help itGrin

Cushionsarecomfie · 24/08/2019 23:42

Monestasi - I never said I was a ‘concerned English user’ That really would make me a smug twat. I just felt it was just gas and air.

Bringing in ‘language is beautiful and ever evolving’ and dismissing those who agree or equally have some annoyance with pointless platitudes as ‘monolingual’ (more than 2/3 of posters) however, does make you a smug twat

Yes I have an instant urge for Masterchef contestants who trot out ‘Enjoy!’ to be slated by the critics/judges. Similar to SparklingB I always think ‘I might... I might not.’

It’s a big problem on MN but I irrationally hate posts that open ‘Oh OP.’ I know it isn’t but it sounds so condescending.

JustanAunt · 25/08/2019 00:40

I love that posters are moaning about people shortened get words these days, as if that's a new phenomenon. Language has always evolved and is usually spearheaded by the younger generations.

If it were up to you lot I'm sure we would all be speaking Shakespearean, oh wait, he evolved language too!

All that being said I did ask a colleague if he had finished with a spreadsheet as I needed to work on the next part of it and he replied 'yes, I have. Enjoy!' And that definitely annoyed me Grin

BritWifeinUSA · 25/08/2019 00:56

I like “enjoy!” and I say it a lot. I hope everyone enjoys whatever they are doing.

One thing that bothers me is they have a habit over here of saying “did you find everything ok?” when you are at the till at the supermarket. I am always tempted to ask “Are you hiding things then?”

BritWifeinUSA · 25/08/2019 00:58

And on the subject of words that are used incorrectly, the worst has to be “literally”. I even once read a Facebook post where someone said “I literally died when I saw this”. No, you didn’t. I can assure you that you didn’t “literally die”.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 25/08/2019 01:04

As in 'what would you guys like?' Or 'I'll put you guys there'. I'm not a guy. I'm a 62 year old woman.

People of the American persuasion seem to have changed around second-person pronouns, so that "you" is only ever singular and the plural form is "you guys".

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 25/08/2019 01:07

Hi BritWife

I hope everyone enjoys whatever they are doing.
That makes sense, the verb has an object!

I like “enjoy!” and I say it a lot
That does not, and sounds stupid!

BritWifeinUSA · 25/08/2019 01:14

Verbs don’t have to gave an Obie t that us spoken or written to make sense, it can be implied. “Stop!” “Leave!” are the same. If a friend says “I’m going to the fair this weekend” I wouldn’t say “enjoy the fair”. “The fair” is redundant. I just say “enjoy!”. Maybe it’s just more common here in the US. I see it as no different from “Cheers!”. Or “merry Christmas!”
Are you saying that you say “hope you have a merry Christmas”? Nope. The rest is implied and understood.

BritWifeinUSA · 25/08/2019 01:16

Verbs don’t have to have an object...is what I meant.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 25/08/2019 02:23

Hi Brit Wife, transitive verbs do. It's like "devour" or "fix".

timestheybeachangin · 25/08/2019 03:09

I hate it when people say ‘drive safe!’ First, it’s ‘drive safely!’, and secondly I think ‘ooh well I wasn’t going to but now you’ve said that I will’.

HalfManHalfLabrador · 25/08/2019 03:12

I say it if I’m trying to be nice but don’t really care

Toneitdown · 25/08/2019 04:30

"drive safe".

Good idea, glad you said that actually because I was planning on driving really dangerously. That could have ended badly!

Toneitdown · 25/08/2019 04:31

Oh wow, I didn't rtft so I didn't realise how seriously some people are taking this. I don't really hate it when people say "drive safe". It was lighthearted.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 25/08/2019 20:28

So I'm going to add a couple of others to the list ...

Journey - as in "I've had an amazing journey" to refer to any change/event from a manicure to a life transformation

Super - to emphasise how great something is e.g "I'm super excited!".

I've got to stop watching shit tv on the E! channel ...

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 25/08/2019 20:50

To clarify ... used sparingly journey isn't so bad. It just seems like every bugger is on a journey of some sort!
