To not want mismatched mugs?

Cloudyyy · 23/08/2019 22:58

Just a lighthearted one really, but why would people buy random mugs as gifts? I can’t undertand wanting a mug bag doesn’t match anything else. All of my crockery must match. Are other people hoarding mismatched mugs and cups at home?? Are people doing this on purpose? Also cushions! Why would someone buy a random cushion for someone’s house that doesn’t match anything else? This happens all the time in my friendship group. Shouldn’t cushions match the sofa exactly? Can’t stand it!!! AIBU?

YANBU AT ALL Shock

Celebelly · 24/08/2019 17:50

How do people serve hot drinks to visitors in these mismatched cups?!

If you're the kind of person offended by mismatched crockery, I can't really think why you'd be visiting me in the first place Grin

CassianAndor · 24/08/2019 18:14

My mismatched mugs are perfectly tasteful, OP, how very dare you? Grin And there are no Sports Direct mugs in my cupboard, thank you very much!

SavoyCabbage · 24/08/2019 18:22

I ask people what cup they would like. Open my cup cupboard and the visitors can behold the magnificence of my cups.

HeronLanyon · 24/08/2019 18:27

savoy oo er I hardly dare look at your magnificence ! BlushGrin

northernknickers · 24/08/2019 18:59

I go all out to be mismatched...I have a fabulous collection of Portobello mugs that I absolutely love! All different patterns, shapes and sizes. I've also got a cupboard full of randomly acquired mugs, that I've probably had for years 🤷‍♀️

I hate symmetry too and get an inner urge to swap things round when I am in a 'symmetrically accessorised' house 😳 (I don't succumb to this urge, obviously! That would be very impudent of me 😯)

HeronLanyon · 24/08/2019 19:43

I have random collected/bought/ presents assorted mugs - all lovely bone china (hate drinking from thick mugs or mugs which aren’t white inside!). Realised recently they are starting to have consistent colour theme. Need to do something about that as they are starting to look a bit matchy for that reason alone.

@Backtosxhool

YANBU I’m with you OP, I like to have sets of at least 4. I can’t stand mugs with Easter eggs on them or Christmas slogans or any other slogans. I also hate thick cheap ones, tea and coffee always tastes better out of thinner china mugs.

Wow. What a terrible snob you sound. Is your name Hyacinth Bucket by any chance? Do you stick your little finger out when you drink your tea in your 'matching crockery?' Wink

But I also hate plain white mugs...nothing screams rental more than cheap white mugs. 🤢

What do you mean by that? Nothing screams 'rental' more than cheap white mugs? Rental what?

Cloudyyy · 24/08/2019 20:06

Ha ha good quality white cups in classic designs are timeless and elegant. Also I would say cushions in any colour other than that of the sofa they sit on are in very poor taste! I have seen some fabulous texture play with cushions in different (but matching) fabrics on sofas though. Regardless of what we want in our own home - I’m all for everyone having their own way with their mugs, of course - it’s the gifting of random mugs which seems senseless! Stop giving people random items for their homes that don’t match anything else they own ✋

I am going to buy a pair of Sports Direct mugs just for the hell of it - the new MN fashion statement. I can always have my Quaker instant porridge in one as I bet they're big enough so the porridge doesn't spill over the edge!

SciFiRules · 24/08/2019 20:38

Solution found!
I have no problem with mismatched mugs but I am running out of mugs... send me your odd mugs and I'll happily drink my morning/afternoon, tea/coffee!

BertieBotts · 24/08/2019 20:45

Cushions I am totally with you, but YABU about mugs.

Mittler · 24/08/2019 20:47

I'm loving this thread.

Absolutely nothing in my house matches anything else. There is lots of brown furniture (family furniture, and auction purchases). Mismatching rugs, mugs, cushions. Some of the china is (gasp) superglued together (superglueing status depends on whether I like it enough to bother, when I break it). My mugs are all bone china, just because I don't like the feel of the thicker ones. However, the DC have a random collection of favourite mugs. Some are thick, and some aren't. Visitors get what they are given, and nobody has yet objected to the standard of the beverages within.

Having matching things would feel to me like living in an Argos catalogue.

I do, though, have friends who have matchy things. I wouldn't buy them mugs, because that would obviously be mad.

donutrehomer · 24/08/2019 20:50

Our mug collection tells the history of days out, holiday, etc.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 24/08/2019 21:00

Personally I don't think mugs need to match. We have some matching but most random, bit more fun IMO - variety is the spice of life and all that!

Cryalot2 · 24/08/2019 21:01

Most of my mugs are in pairs or groups.
Others are special for various reasons.
If they were a gift or from somewhere special then that gives them a place here as opposed to a set of meaningless ones .
As for cushions, I only have a few which were gifts. I use as hearth scatter cushions ( not when the fire is on obvs ) I don't have the need for cushions on my sofas and am not keen on them .
But I can cope with non matching items in life ,I just wish that was all I had to fret about

GloriousMystery · 24/08/2019 21:15

Do the matchy-matchy people also favour ‘classic’ names? Is there a correlation between a matching mug cupboard/ thinking it’s ‘poor taste’ to have sofa cushions other than in the colour of the sofa and calling your children Emma and Edward?

HeronLanyon · 24/08/2019 21:21

glorious I think matchy May have correlation with youoooneeck names surely ?

Mittler · 24/08/2019 21:34

I was about to say that, HeronLanyon, but you got there first.

Cloudyyy · 24/08/2019 21:36

Hahaha my DC certainly don’t have yoooneek names 😂🤭

I worked in a high end interiors store many moons ago. It was drummed Into us that matching items was not on. Even your sofas should be different.

BalanchineBallet · 24/08/2019 21:49

@GloriousMystery and @HeronLanyon

I have very mismatched mugs, and DC with very unusual names..... but not normal names spelt weird.

Think Tarquin and Lysander ...

Mittler · 24/08/2019 22:00

Same here, BalanchineBallet Grin

Cloudyyy · 24/08/2019 22:02

@BalanchineBallet Oooh some common ground! My DCs have strong, timeless and very beautiful names with lots of history and meaning. They’re a little quirky and definitely not top ten but they are well known names with the ‘correct’ spelling. They are a little matchy-matchy (in so far as they’re from the same time period and in a similar style) but not overly so.

Mittler · 24/08/2019 22:02

lalafafa Sorry - didn't see yours. Laughing at 'even sofas' being non-matching. You'd be hard pushed to buy matching sofas in a saleroom, thank God. I've always thought that matching sofas and chairs would be owned by people who call a sitting room a lounge. Grin
