AIBU to ask how to get nits to fuck off

dontlikebeards · 23/08/2019 19:28

I have 3 dds and for the past 3 months nits have been a constant fucking nightmare in my life. I have tried gel, shampoo, nit combing every week but they won't go. I hoped the summer holidays would ease the problem but it hasn't. AIBU to ask for advice on how to kill the bastards?

My sympathies!

Comb every night til they've gone. It's tedious but necessary!

Thatnameistaken · 23/08/2019 19:33

Cheap conditioner, lots of it, apply every night and comb through with a nit comb for 3 or for nights in a row, repeat if necessary. It's the only thing I found that worked, and I tried everything!

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 23/08/2019 19:36

Nitty gritty comb. Daily with conditioner till nothing live comes out. Then every two days for a month. Then weekly forever.

mbosnz · 23/08/2019 19:38

Also, when I treated, I washed all bedding, and towels, on a hot wash. Also, make sure you're cleaning out the combs and brushes - in a hot wash. Also, any hair ties.

RandomMess · 23/08/2019 19:48

Cheap conditioner on dry hair whilst they watch a DVD.

Every third day with the nitty gritty comb is enough as it take the bastards 7 days to be mature enough to lay eggs.

If you've not used a nitty gritty yet you may be horrified by how many eggs and baby critters it get out.

🤮

This really.

I've got 4 DDs. Long hair. Cheap conditioner combed through every night for a week used to be the only thing which got rid of the buggers. And the DDs hair was lovely!

One evening i put a live nit in a blob of chemical nit killer on the side of the bath and it was still alive the next morning. Would never bother with it anymore.

Claire90ftm · 23/08/2019 20:55

Yeah I second what everyone has said. Conditioner and comb. There are so many nit treatments out there but unfortunately they can be immune to them so the only sure fire way is conditioner.

rainbowlou · 23/08/2019 20:58

I got so fed up with them that I ended up straightening my dd’s hair on the highest heat setting.
They didn’t return 😂

Livingthedream12345 · 23/08/2019 21:02

I spray dd's hair with a solution made from water and a few drops of tea tree oil. Apparently nits hate it...

MitziK · 23/08/2019 21:18

5 drops of lavender oil on the hair will send the fuckers scurrying to the surface. Comb out, repeat with wet hair and conditioner every other day (gives them a chance to move back down if they were missed/mobile at the time).

It works. No insecticides, no sting from tea tree oil (or risk to pets).

dontlikebeards · 23/08/2019 21:18

Thanks all, I have been doing it every few days but I will try doing it every day and see how we go. The kids are going to hate me!!
I do have a nitty gritty comb. I'm going to buy tea tree tomorrow.
I hate the little bastards!

Adding lavender oil to the shopping list...

The cheap conditioner is the only thing.

With a bag on the head, pressed tight, to smother them further.

Ferocious pain in the ass. You have my sympathy. 💐

Yaflamingalah · 23/08/2019 21:21

The hairdresser told me to blast them with the hair straighteners after using the nitty gritty and nothing will live.

Branleuse · 23/08/2019 21:22

Can you cut their hair short if the nits are persistent

Poetryinaction · 23/08/2019 21:22

My dd had them over and over from preschool. In the end I gave up on nitty gritty. I found the tiniest eggs it left behind. I picked out every last one with my fingers and we have been free all Summer. Shame she is back in preschool in September.

Azeema · 23/08/2019 21:24

Any oil will work. Lice breathe through exterior and when you comb oil through hair with nit comb, it suffocates them. You have to do this everyday for two weeks to get baby lice as they hatch. AFter that weekly for a couple months.
I use olive oil when they sat in Bath...then shower off oil and clean tub. Olive oil good for hair too.
Also, do yourself, everyone in house too.

partysong · 23/08/2019 21:27

Lyclear was the only thing that worked for me.

MirrorHope · 23/08/2019 21:33

Been through this twice and cleared it twice.

Number 1 - 8 hour Hedrin. It's not an insecticide it suffocates the live lice. Wash out and then get the stubborn egg removal kit. Then comb out - rinse the comb after every comb through - don't double comb!!! Keep the tap running or sit them on a stool in the bath and rinse under tap.

Then dry the hair and then literally you sit and go through each section of hair and physically pull off any remaining eggs. Do it again 6 days later and you should be free.

Note - when you pull out the egg you'll need good light - you'll also need to squish the egg between your thumbnails - place it onto 1 nail then squash between them if it pops there was a live louse in it!!!

Good luck

Arkestra · 23/08/2019 23:24

3 things:

  1. Hedrin Once" suffocates live lice but does not kill all eggs.
  2. Eggs can take up to 10 days to hatch.
  3. Lice take at least 7 days to mature enough to lay eggs

So if you treat with Hedrin Once 3 times at weekly intervals you will completely clear an infestation, assuming there are no new visitors from elsewhere.

We've done this a few times and it's always worked.

whattodowith · 23/08/2019 23:31

Hedrin is the only thing that worked for me. I tried the tea tree conditioner every night and raked through with a nitty gritty comb but always must have missed some (or possibly just the eggs). Tried hedrin and they were gone straight away, never returned.

FluffyPinkSocks · 23/08/2019 23:35

I’m in the midst of an infestation. Tried the conditioner combing for the first month, I obviously missed some eggs because the bloody things were still there. I used Lyclear on Tuesday and spent the best part of 6 hours going through everyone’s heads.

I’m rechecking their hair tomorrow.....I will scream if there are any there. I have seen anyone scratching since but that’s no guarantee.

I have warned one of the girls if she takes her hair down in school anymore I’m taking her to the hairdresser to get her head shaved.

FluffyPinkSocks · 23/08/2019 23:45

*haven’t

DropZoneOne · 23/08/2019 23:57

Coconut oil with tea tree - melt the oil, spread through the hair, leave to suffocate the lice, nitty gritty out, wash and dry - repeat every 3 days

Or buy an electric lice comb - comb through sections of dry hair every 3 days. Doesn't seem to get the tiny ones or eggs, but is very satisfying zapping bigger ones and by doing frequently you'll get them before they are mature enough to mate.

Nitwits worked well here
