DD hair disaster, urgent advice needed!

Oh christ this is awful. 15 years old, we started letting her dye her hair at 13 as long as it was black/brown/blonde/red etc and not crazy colours. She's been black, dark brown, red, and brown with a purple tinge which was her most recent colour about 3 months ago. She has always done it herself with a home dye kit and we've avoided any disasters up until now. She decided she wanted to go full on platinum blonde because that seems to be the thing right now and we're going on holiday on Sunday. She goes upstairs to do it and an hour later emerges in tears after drying her hair because it's orange. And god it really is awful, there are tinges of green and red in there. We are going abroad in 2 days and all of the hair salons are saying they can't get us in with such short notice but they'll call if they get a cancellation! Does anyone have any advice? I've bought her some chocolate brown hair dye (she won't go out) because I feel dark colours will cover it all up but I don't want to use it yet as I have no idea what I'm doing!

Op we’ve all done similar as a teen. I know it won’t help right now, but I agree when she gets older, you’ll all laugh about it.

stucknoue · 23/08/2019 17:32

Do you have a walk in place in the town centre, we have a couple that do colour.

campingaddict · 23/08/2019 17:37

Hairdressers need to do a skin test 48 hours before a colour appointment so even if they get a cancellation it's unlikely they can do it, also insurance companies don't cover for under 16 year olds. Any salon that goes against this then I wouldn't trust them anyway

AudacityOfHope · 23/08/2019 17:49

Do what my mum did when I did exactly the same: get a hat on her head, get her in a taxi to the hairdresser and get it sorted.

The condition of my hair wasn't the same for years. But as least it was no longer the colour of sick.

drinkygin · 23/08/2019 17:51

There is some terrible advice on this thread.
Please take her to a professional.

AnotherOneBitesTheDust · 23/08/2019 17:55

Just to add the ketchup does work!!!!! My friend is always dying her hair at home and has used ketchup in the past it does work. Worth a shot as a starting point anyway.

ohfuckitsorange · 23/08/2019 17:57

She's gone and dyed it brown with the hair dye I bought without telling me. I told her to wait and she's done it anyway. She's drying it now...ffs wish us luck.

Sometimes my natural blonde goes green after too much swimming and tomato ketchup does work as others have said. I would use that first then if you can a colour stripper then brown or bright red dye (happened to me as a teen and light/mid brown went on no bother. Good luck!

EnglishRose13 · 23/08/2019 18:13

I was hoping for photos.

happinessischocolate · 23/08/2019 18:20

My daughter went on holiday with green/brown hair a few years back and by the end of the week in the sun and in the pool it was blonde.

Funghi · 23/08/2019 18:26

Seconding trying local mobile hairdressers via FB or similar.

coldlighthappier · 23/08/2019 18:28

When mine looked orange I just put an ash blonde on it and it didn’t even look orange at all after that!

BikeRunSki · 23/08/2019 18:37

How has it come out @ohfuckitsorange?

I’ve been there and done that at a similar age. Ended up with considerably shorter hair.

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 23/08/2019 18:44

Get some proper head and sholders and give it a good wash and rinse until the water runs clear. Wait until tomorrow and dye with a black.
Brown with make it green.
Ive been where she is. Black works best.

ohfuckitsorange · 23/08/2019 18:48

@BikeRunSki It's come out very dark brown with a slight green tinge in the light. It's not as eye catching as the bright orange but still a bit grim. Don't think it'll attract stares though as you have to be properly looking to see the green IYSWIM, so have told her she'll have to go on holiday with it like this and she can go to a salon as soon as we get back.

@ohfuckitsorange tomato ketchup will
Help tone down the green. Seriously!!

It might need redone a few time if you're going on a beach/pool holiday but it really does work.

DrPeppersPhD · 23/08/2019 21:10

We've all done something stupid like that. Wash in ketchup or put a red box dye over it, and let this exist as a lesson to her, colour stripper before bleach and preferably no bleach at all.

TheInebriati · 23/08/2019 21:29

Tell her before she goes swimming in a pool treated with chlorine or the sea, to soak it in fresh water first. Hair can only soak up so much water. Then use an acid based shampoo (or tomato juice/ketchup) when she gets out to strip the chlorine out.

Craftycorvid · 23/08/2019 21:39

It should be relatively safe to use a good quality natural henna over the brown (something like Lush is good). It will condition and coat the hair. Do check with a hairdresser first though. I used henna over a disastrous perm (I know) and it helped tame the frizz and calm down the brassiness.

heartburn888 · 23/08/2019 22:07

Lifting box dyes with lightener is a big no no especially at home you need to do this process gardullay and professionally as lifting home dues will always turn your hair bright orange. I think they have some kind of metallic colours on. Don’t quote me on that though I learned hairdressing at college about 9 years ago ha.

I’d go through the process of dying back dark. There is a home due you can buy in the supermarket which contains the purple/red tones but I can’t remember which Brad it is (helpful) think it’s the nutirsse ones.

Marnie76 · 23/08/2019 22:13

Try the ketchup op

RavenLG · 23/08/2019 22:19

She obviously didn’t do a patch test which is massively dangerous! I’d stop her from dying her hair until she learns to be more responsible!
