Robbed twice in one week

So we were burgled whilst in house the other night and they also made off with our car keys. Second robbery is through the bloody insurance (admiral) who have increased it by £500 as we have one car and not two to insure now. Wtf? Can't make this stuff up! They are also not providing a hire car or much in the way of car contents (ie doesn't even cover the cost to replace glasses).

My car was in a not at fault accident once and they didn't pay out to replace the carseat my 3 month old daughter was in- despite it being a legal requirement to have a carseat for a child.

Insurance is really crap.

Sorry you are experiencing this

schoolquandry · 23/08/2019 14:50

Thanks. That's pretty rubbish too

familycourtq · 23/08/2019 14:53

Sorry op - I can’t make any sense of your post.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 23/08/2019 14:53

I would take to social media with that. Plaster it all over Twitter. I think they might sort it out. Disgusting from admiral

summersherewishiwasnt · 23/08/2019 14:53

Disagree insurance is crap as a general statement. We robbed twice recently and had no problems whatsoever. Applying for insurance online is the way to go you can read everything and taylor your policy to your needs.
Being under insured is a problem. As is high a excess.

summersherewishiwasnt · 23/08/2019 14:54

We’re robbed. Of course we didn’t rob personally !

poolblack · 23/08/2019 14:57

I don't know what you mean.

Jayne35 · 23/08/2019 15:05

Insurance is very unfair. DH car was written off teenage Joyriders (who weren't' caught). Apparently it's to be declared as an 'at fault' claim as there was no one else to claim from, his insurance more than doubled! And they wonder why people risk being uninsured!

schoolquandry · 23/08/2019 15:08

Sorry for confusion. We have two cars so were on a multi car insurance. Burglars stole keys to both cars. However they only stole one car (couldn't steal the other one as they couldn't start it! It's rarely used as is a two seater, but hubby wanted to keep it in case we ever had kid free time!). We have therefore gone from two cars to one and the insurance company have increased our premium by 500 for this!

schoolquandry · 23/08/2019 15:11

Summer, sorry to hear that and glad you're not a robber! What insurance company did you use?
Jayne, that's shocking. I'm really surprised by that.

swimlyn · 23/08/2019 15:17

The reason that companies like Aviva seem so truly wonderful in their adverts is because they have a strong determination to decline ANY claims you might make. And then they try to make out that WE are the fraudsters! All of us…

Obviously there are some dishonest people around, but our experience is that the insurance companies are the biggest crooks.

Tonnerre · 23/08/2019 15:18

Shop around and see if you can get a better deal elsewhere.

easyandy101 · 23/08/2019 15:20

Surely they put your premiums up because your car got stolen rather than because you have less cars on the policy?

ie your risk profile has changed

MrsBethel · 23/08/2019 15:23

Shop around. Use the comparison sites.

Multi car policies are generally a rip off, so wouldn't be surprised if you can actually get it for less than before.

poolblack · 23/08/2019 15:28

You lost your multi car discount you mean?

If your multicar discount is £500 how much is your insurance Shock

allteanoshade · 23/08/2019 16:18

If you've told the insurance company that the thieves have a set of keys to the remaining car, surely it's completely understandable that they would increase your premium since they're likely to come back and steal that also? Confused

schoolquandry · 23/08/2019 17:55

They have said that if second car is stolen we are responsible until we get locks changed. No claims was protected, so really can't understand this increase. Obviously won't be staying with this insurer.

OP posts:
PancakeAndKeith · 23/08/2019 17:58

Being burgled while you were in sounds terrifying.

Singlebutmarried · 23/08/2019 17:59

I’m confused.

Surely the insurance policy for the stolen car is still valid as you’re claiming off of it?

Would you not be replacing the car or the insurance company paying out so you can replace the car.

Surely if you cancel the policy the price will go up by the pro rata amount remaining on the policy (if you pay monthly).

Hollycatberry · 23/08/2019 17:59

They are also not providing a hire car or much in the way of car contents

Did your policy include a guaranteed hire car? If not, they won’t provide one as that’s an extra these days. Contents cover is usually low as I guess most people don’t leave much in the car. It’s difficult to complain about this element as that’s the basis of the cover and you would have paid more premium to have a higher cover rate iyswim

Damia · 23/08/2019 18:31

Shouldn't insurance pay to have locks changed on remaining car with keys stolen?

poolblack · 23/08/2019 18:34

Shouldn't insurance pay to have locks changed on remaining car with keys stolen?

Yes, it would be against the house insurance though.

OP what are your home insurance company saying ?

coconuttelegraph · 23/08/2019 18:44

Can you explain a bit more, why wont you replace the stolen car with the insurance proceds? Are they just being a bit useless at explaining it to you. If you have one car and it's stolen you don't get your premiums back because you no longer have a car do you?

schoolquandry · 23/08/2019 19:24

They will pay out for stolen car, but obviously we will not be able to buy like-for-like as the price insurance companies give you is rarely on a par with cost of buying one. Assuming car isn't recovered shortly, we should get money to buy another car though. They won't pay out for changing a car lock though. Insurance company have cancelled our insurance (their request) on the stolen car as we are no longer in possession of it, but have upped the total cost by £500 for insuring one car rather than 2. Home insurance seem to be better (marks and spencer) but I don't know how they'll be for things we can't find receipts for. I hadn't thought to ask home insurance about changing car lock, so will ask them, thanks. Can anyone recommend a good car insurance company that they've had to actually use in an incident or crash? Lots of them say the same things, but often it's not til you need one that you find out how good or bad they are.

Annoyingly, I heard the burglars (pregnant and not sleeping too well at moment) and thought it was one of the kids getting water or something downstairs. Was about to find out why they were messing around for so long when I heard front door click. I think if burglars had heard movement upstairs they may have scarpered, so wish I'd not waited to see what I thought kids were doing. Kids don't normally go downstairs in the middle of night, so I'm kicking myself for assuming that now. Of course, burglars may also have turned violent and this way no one was hurt. It's scary trying to sleep now as robbery happened in middle of night - ironic as the other night it didn't even occur to me when it should have done! Police were there in minutes and car was spotted by them half a mile away, so I almost expected it to be recovered.

We had 4 cars (3 adults), dropped to 3 and the premium went up with admiral.
