Round here we have no public transport and taxis close up shop about 8/9pm. Most people I know will be a designated driver but often have a pint and then soft drinks. Some a bit more. Non off thier face drunk. I’m a fairly new driver so usually I’ll abstain or have a drink if I know it’s hours before I’m going to drink. What’s normal for you and your area?

I would never go to the pub for drinks, have a drink then drive home later. If I went out for dinner at 7pm and I'm not going home until midnight, I might have about half a glass of wine with dinner. By which I mean a tiny half glass, maybe 70ml or so.

I don't ever drive after I've been drinking at home. Although my wineglasses at home are (deliberately) tiny, so that I know how much I'm drinking, because I don't want to fall into the trap of thinking I'm drinking less than I actually am.

bumblingbovine49 · 23/08/2019 08:08

I sometimes have a glass of wine with a meal but maybe sip a quarter of it, never more than half. In a pub I don't have anything at all

Obviously this is your choice, but you do realise that your body will process roughly a unit of alcohol an hour? So if you have a glass of wine (2 units) at 7pm, by around 10pm (accounting for the alcohol being absorbed) the amount of alcohol in your bloodstream will be the same as it was before you drank?

My fiance has a hobby one evening a week. I go with him to support him. A wife of one of the team had 2 pints a week ago and I asked her who was driving and she said she was. I said oh you better not have any more then. She said ah I'll be OK to have another it doesn't affect me really. I said that she may think it doesn't but if she has an accident and kills someone how will she feel then. She ignored this comment and carried on. I just was astonished at her attitude! I think you shouldn't drink if you are driving.

Mumsnet

Woodlandwitch · 23/08/2019 08:14

One drink and then driving is very normal around here due to the drink after work culture

bellinisurge · 23/08/2019 08:15

Sounds like you are making excuses @herculepoirot2 .

For what?

TreacherousPissFlap · 23/08/2019 08:15

Neither DH or I drink anything if we're driving. Like a PP we have recently discovered Peroni Libera and have spent a happy summer sitting in pub gardens "drinking" then jumping in the car and driving home Grin

Happyspud · 23/08/2019 08:17

I have one drink if I’m the driver usually. There’s pretty much always a huge meal and 4+ hrs before I actually drive so I’m fine with that.

Lweji · 23/08/2019 08:19

I said that she may think it doesn't but if she has an accident and kills someone how will she feel then.

She'd probably have serious legal troubles besides any feelings of guilt.

Hercule is not finding excuses. It's right that some pps are over careful. Having said that, I think it's best if people take 4 hours after drinking to drive than 1. No doubts then. 24h is way ott.

Woodlandwitch · 23/08/2019 08:22

24hrs is massively ott

It means most people I know wouldn’t be able to drive themselves to work the next day after having a few drinks the evening before

BossAssBitch · 23/08/2019 08:23

We live rurally, it seems everyone around here thinks the drink and drive laws don’t apply to them. The other day we were at the pub in the garden and some very rah men got in their respective Porsches and Ranges after a very heavy drinking session and no one bar DH and I batted an eyelid. I have never seen the police around here so I guess they know they can get away with it.

I limit myself to one but only if I’m at the pub which is a 5 minute drive away, otherwise I won’t have anything

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 23/08/2019 08:23

I would drive after a half of lager, or a small glass of wine (carefully measured) if I have eaten with it.

I am OK with DH driving after a pint.

WaxOnFeckOff · 23/08/2019 08:25

I'm in Scotland too, most I've had is a half of cider, 6 hours and a large meal before I've then driven. If I've had a night out with a good few drinks then I don't drive next day until evening time.

shiveringtimber · 23/08/2019 08:25

No. I wouldn't dare.

Yes, I do, but I'm just generally a fairly cautious person. Although on mumsnet, that isn't generally viewed as cautious but as outright drink driving, barely any better than drinking a bottle of vodka and then getting six children in the car without seat belts and driving home along a cliff edge road.

True. 😂

Lweji · 23/08/2019 08:39

Why do some pps take what not even a couple of pps said to mean the whole MN?

Many here said they have one drink. They're also MN and in large amounts.

funmummy48 · 23/08/2019 08:40

I don't drink at all if I'm driving as that way there's nothing to worry about.

NoSauce · 23/08/2019 08:42

If I’m out for a meal I sometimes have wine and soda over the course of the night, but nurse it more than drink it tbf. I wouldn’t drink anything if I wasn’t eating.

isabellerossignol · 23/08/2019 08:42

Yes you're right of course. It's just that Mumsnet is the only place I've ever come across people who say they wouldn't drive for 24 hours after having a drink, I've even seen some posters in the past say that they wouldn't drive for 48 hours.

But yes, I was being facetious. Blush

honeyloops · 23/08/2019 08:51

I'd have half a pint of cider, max, definitely no wine.

pooopypants · 23/08/2019 08:51

Not a drop if I'm driving. I don't see the point.

I'm also of the opinion that there should be no 'limit' for DD, if you alcohol in your blood, you're not fit to drive.

stargirl1701 · 23/08/2019 08:53

I'm in Scotland so I wouldn't even drink the evening before and drive early in the morning.

The new limit has had a huge impact on alcohol consumption for me and nearly everyone I know.
