Should private jets be banned?

Engoltheharpy · 22/08/2019 15:46

Given the impact flights have on the environment should the private use and ownership of private jets be banned?
It seems grossly unfair to request ordinary people reduce the amount of times they fly on a shared flight while turning a blind eye to the rich using a private jet frequently for single digit numbers of travellers.

I agree some of the replies are really strange and quiet out of kilter with how normal people on mumsnet are often made feel guilty about their part in climate change. We all have a role to play and should be aware of our own carbon foot print. Been wealthy should not give anyone the green light to ignore the impact they make on our environment and those doing so are guilty of been beyond ignorant.
My opening question may not be clear, I only hold the opinion that personal use of private jets should be banned. It is simply not necessary on a personal basis, yes of course it's something we may all like and feel we need to do if we could afford to but that's very different from heads of state needing to travel immediately or an emergency situation that requires a particular person or people's immediate attendance.

If you want to help the environment, allow private jets, but ban all other jets. So no one flies, except the very wealthy. Would cut down the number of flights by 99.999% at a stroke.

But I'm guessing the OP isn't in favour of that.

CruCru · 22/08/2019 16:34

Out of nosiness, how would you practically ban them? It might be that they end up being banned in the UK (probably along with pretty much all light aircraft) but that doesn’t mean that they will be banned throughout the world. In parts of Southern Africa, light aircraft are pretty much the only way to get somewhere without it taking days and days (because the roads are crap or don’t exist).

Engoltheharpy · 22/08/2019 16:35

Lifecraft why guess rather than just ask?

Yet another half baked, bumper sticker politics, response to the complex issue of climate change and environmental protection.

Will doubtless appeal to many with a three second attention span. This suggestion has the added benefit of pandering to class based hatred so will probably resonate with even more of those looking for easy answers to complex problems.

Engoltheharpy · 22/08/2019 16:39

By doing what you suggest you would be allowing the personal carbon foot print of one person flying to be approx 8 times higher than if they flew using a shared airplane.

Wealth does not = class, what an absurd out dated notion to think classes still have a place in our society.

*Absolutely NOT how else is Ryan Gosling goibg to initiate me into the mile high club.

This was my concern also but with Dwayne Johnson.*

I don't think it counts on private planes I'm afraid. Too easy otherwise (if you can afford it)

Completely agree

I've just seen at article but the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge flying with the kids and nanny on an economy domestic Flybe flight. Maybe it's possible for VIPs to fly economy sometimes?

hiddenmnetter · 22/08/2019 19:03

That would be a stupid way to address the issue. The correct way is to either put a tax on fossil fuel that reduces consumption to an acceptable level. No distinction needs to be made between the vehicles using the fuel.

I disagree strongly- all this does it make air travel uneconomical for poor people. The rich get to continue polluting and doing what they like (and they will) and the poor have to suffer the consequences.

Surely the ACTUAL solution is to invest in research to improve the efficiency of air travel or alternative means or alternative fuel sources? Instead of just saying “under new rules, poor people aren’t allowed to pollute, but they are technically, we’ve just put it beyond their means”

😂 Just no. The richest 15% take 70% of UK flights. Majority of poor people don’t fly.

Happygilmorelove · 22/08/2019 19:21

Yes they should be. They are ridiculous!

AmateurSwami · 22/08/2019 19:22

This has taken an odd turn baring in mind most of mn is full of fake woke people who are massively opposed to air travel.

LydiasDad · 22/08/2019 19:24

Why ban? As many others have said, just tax the fuel used and but actually use the money to carbon offset - as opposed to squandering the fuel duty on non environmental causes.

AmateurSwami · 22/08/2019 19:25

This screen shot made me happy though

Should private jets be banned?
SimonJT · 22/08/2019 19:26

I have travelled on them for a few times with an ex due to his career, sometimes it was a case of private jet or no work as the scheduled flights wouldn’t get him between various places quick enough.

It’s AIBU what do you expect. OP is completely right. It should be atleast very difficult to use a private jet, the rich shouldn’t be able to order them like a taxi.

AmateurSwami · 22/08/2019 22:45

@Hithere12 was that aimed at me? I’m in agreement with the op...

finsanity · 22/08/2019 22:50

From the back page of WIRED magazine this month, digital technologies (data centres, mobile devices/networks) will be responsible for double the global carbon emissions of the entire aviation industry by 2020. Should we ban digital technologies rather than argue about private jets?

Mum2jenny · 22/08/2019 22:51

No, as plenty of ppl do much worse things to the environment.

Just let individuals make their own decisions.

However maybe these choices could have an environmental tax imposed on them?

LittleMy20 · 22/08/2019 22:51

Yes.

AmateurSwami · 23/08/2019 10:37

Should we ban digital technologies rather than argue about private jets?. Why not both?

whattodowith · 23/08/2019 10:40

should motorbike's be banned

Yes.
