Lamb in chest freezer for 2 years. Would you throw or eat?

Posting here for traffic.

I've just gone through my chest freezer in the basement and I have 5 lamp chops and 2 pieces of lamb chump. Given to me by the FIL from his friends farm TWO YEARS ago Confused.

They are wrapped and sealed but I assume they won't be much good now. Do I bin or defrost and use them?

Suppose I could always cook them up for the dog if not. Smile

I’d defrost the chump and cook to test it.

No, I wouldn’t eat two year old meat, even frozen. (I wouldn’t give it to the dogs either!)

Greensleeves · 22/08/2019 14:55

I'd eat it. Slow cook it in stock and make casserole, pie or curry.

Cheeserton · 22/08/2019 14:59

Yes, eat it. Not a huge deal.

SistersOfPercy · 22/08/2019 15:00

I'd eat it as well, as long as it's not freezer burnt I imagine it will be fine.

caranx · 22/08/2019 15:00

Eat definitely

SuzieQ10 · 22/08/2019 15:01

Nope. I wouldn't be eating 2 year old meat.

Fsid00 · 22/08/2019 15:02

Will give it a go in the slow cooker tomorrow.

Shows how often I clean out my big freezer Grin. Must do better!

Eat.

bluebellation · 22/08/2019 15:03

It'll be fine. Trim off any obvious freezer burn and cook it slowly.

AwdBovril · 22/08/2019 15:04

As long as it's not got freezer burn, I'd eat it. Probably in a casserole, as it might be slightly dry. Ive definitely eaten meat that's been frozen longer than that. Always been fine.

MrsT1405 · 22/08/2019 15:05

I wouldn't hesitate to eat it. A lot of lamb is months old when you buy it anyway.

BlueSkiesLies · 22/08/2019 15:06

I’d eat it. Probably be better in a stew.

Pepperama · 22/08/2019 15:06

Defrost and sniff. You can tell when meat isn’t right anymore. If it smells ok it’s perfectly ok to eat.

Celaeno · 22/08/2019 15:11

If it’s been stored properly then it won’t make you ill. Freezing prevents it going bad. The only thing might be the quality isn’t quite what it was - but that’s easily disguised in a casserole.

cantfindname · 22/08/2019 15:13

If it's been frozen then yes, of course I would eat it I really don't see the problem.

colourlessgreenidea · 22/08/2019 15:13

Those saying they wouldn’t eat it - why? What will have happened to it while it was frozen?

Vibiano · 22/08/2019 15:15

It'll be fine if it's cooked in a stew.
Enjoy

bloodywhitecat · 22/08/2019 15:17

It will be absolutely fine, I would (and have) eaten stuff from the freezer that's much older than that. The quality starts to deteriorate a little but it is still as safe as it was the day it was frozen (provided the freezer is working properly).

ElizaDee · 22/08/2019 15:18

I'd eat it.

Fizzypoo · 22/08/2019 15:18

Eat it. Its frozen, the worst that could happen is the meat has freezer burn.

ZazieTheCat · 22/08/2019 15:19

My aunts once cooked a joint she’d had in the freezer for about five years. Gave everyone a sore tummy. Not food poisoning, it just sat like lead.

Mummyshark2019 · 22/08/2019 15:20

Do not eat two year old meat!!!

MmmBlowholes · 22/08/2019 15:21

Chuck it out

GameSetMatch · 22/08/2019 15:21

Cook them and give them to a dog, I hate wasted food but I wouldn’t eat two year old food.
