Lamb in chest freezer for 2 years. Would you throw or eat?

Posting here for traffic.

I've just gone through my chest freezer in the basement and I have 5 lamp chops and 2 pieces of lamb chump. Given to me by the FIL from his friends farm TWO YEARS ago Confused.

They are wrapped and sealed but I assume they won't be much good now. Do I bin or defrost and use them?

Suppose I could always cook them up for the dog if not. Smile

I was contemplating eating rabbit that I found in my freezer that is at least 4 years old but then realised it would probably be tough as old boots and tasteless. I kind of think of a frozen food as being in a suspended state of animation.
I have eaten several veggie burgers recently that are 6 months out of date. To be honest I rarely think about dates on frozen food.
I would eat the lamb but in a well cooked stew. Obviously defrost and review first. We all get power cuts periodically and even a short one could change the quality and safety.
I found this site helpful:

I wouldn't have thought about it. Just asked my husband who is a former chef (not that really has anything to do with it) he said it can be eaten as long as thoroughly defrosted and cooked but won't be as tender or tasty so a slow cooked curry would be a good idea or something similar

NChangingAgain · 22/08/2019 17:23

Wouldn't even be a question for me! We have plenty of old stuff in our freezer, never done us any harm at all.
Stew/slow cooker.

Cryalot2 · 22/08/2019 17:23

Thaw well and cook as a stew and enjoy

BlueBirdGreenFence · 22/08/2019 17:29

If sperm can be frozen for years and then create a fully functioning human with no ill effects, a rump of lamb should be fine to cook and eat.

Cohle · 22/08/2019 17:38

I would.

It will be perfectly safe to eat, it's just that the texture/taste can deteriorate over time. In a casserole I'm sure it'll be fine though.

I wouldn't grill the lamb chops, but I would defrost, cut off any freezer burnt bits and slow cook, assuming it smelt ok at every stage. Enjoy

@KetoWithIF Grinits from a famous Roald Dahl story in Tales of the Unexpected. Classic.

Lol if my sperm was being kept in a domestic chest freezer I'd want my money back thanks

I'd eat it, and I'm sure we habe eaten meat frozen for as long. I would slow cook it for ages, in something like a tagine or a curry that has lots of added veggies and flavour to compensate for any loss of flavour/quality.

Oddbins · 22/08/2019 18:46

There will not be any bacteria in it but the fat may have gone rancid that you will be able to smell.

It will be drier than usual so better cooked in liquid but as long as it's not rancid it will be fine just not as good as it was

CottonSock · 22/08/2019 18:52

Wouldn't even think twice about it, unless it was dried out

colourlessgreenidea · 22/08/2019 19:59

its from a famous Roald Dahl story in Tales of the Unexpected. Classic.

I remember that! Didn’t she feed the lamb to the police?

I'd probably eat it if it had been in the fridge for two years.

Yogagirl123 · 22/08/2019 20:06

I wouldn’t.

avocadoincident · 22/08/2019 20:07

I'd take it to a woods or field and leave it for a Fox

rabbitwoman · 22/08/2019 20:09

Funny you should say that!! I am defrosting a couple of lamb's hearts I have had in the freezer for over two years. Gonna slow cook them tomorrow with stock, veg and tomatoes, beat with garlic bread...... Will let you know how it goes!!

7Worfs · 22/08/2019 20:16

Some of the frozen meat sold is a lot older than that so 🤷‍♀️

MerryDeath · 22/08/2019 20:20

I give things like that to my mum and dad to give to their dogs. can't bear to waste food particularly not any sort of animal product.

AnnaMariaDreams · 22/08/2019 20:24

I would eat it without a second thought. I never pay any attention to how long things have been frozen for.

MissB83 · 22/08/2019 20:33

@colourlessgreenidea she did! Really creepy story.

nimski · 22/08/2019 20:33

Yep eat it
