To ask how much holiday spending money to take?

Ohpleasenotnow · 21/08/2019 21:26

On different types of holidays (and yes, I'm expecting somebody to say everybody's budget is different...but nonetheless).

How much spending money (for food and activities) would you take per week for a family of four on:

A European holiday home rental holiday?
A city break?
An all inclusive holiday?
A Eurocamp type holiday?

I'm just tired of going on holiday and feeling like we've never budgeted properly to get the full experience of being there.

Depends on where all inclusive but we spent about £250 for a week in Bulgaria and that included an excursion for the three of us.

gingajewel · 21/08/2019 21:29

I budget a £100 a day for four of us but I’m on a tight budget so this is more an England rental property! Looking to go all inclusive next year and I’m aiming for £70 euros per day for the four of us.

neversleepagain · 21/08/2019 21:31

I budget £100 a day for a family of 4 in Cornwall.

Sparklesocks · 21/08/2019 21:36

I think it depends on the destination and the type of holiday you want. City breaks for example, if you went to Dublin and wanted to enjoy the night life that wouldn’t be the same as a quiet long weekend in Krakow. Also you do do things like go to a supermarket to buy bread/cheese and make sandwiches for lunches every day, or do you want to treat yourself out each time. Generally though I think 50-100 euros a day per person depending on the city is my average.

PhantomErik · 21/08/2019 21:39

We took £500 for a family of 5 for a week in Menorca & came home with about 70.

chomalungma · 21/08/2019 21:40

Do you need much actual money? We have got by with a pre-paid money card - which is great.

Really hard to say - all depends on what you want to do everyday, whether you like paid activities, eating out or self catering and lounging about...

There is a great calculator that tells you the cost of things in different countries.

We spent £1k at self catering villa for 4.... BUT we had saved up in advance as it was an out of ordinary holiday for us, so we knew we were eating out at a naice town each night, buying food in for villa, petrol, for hire car, treats during day eg ice creams, stopping for drinks etc... It was to enjoy the week treating ourselves as a one off rather than usual tight budget in UK holidays Smile

Soontobe60 · 21/08/2019 21:43

We generally budget £1000 for a two week holiday, regardless of where we go. That's for 3 people. Never done AI, but would probably take half of that if we did.
We also have our debit cards just in case!

S0uthernBelle · 21/08/2019 21:43

We took £300 to Greece, family of 4 ( 2 adults, 17 and 14 years old) all inclusive. Which paid for a half day boat trip (£100)

Stompythedinosaur · 21/08/2019 21:44

I budget about £100 a day, but we don't always eat out, and I budget big activity costs separately.

ghostyslovesheets · 21/08/2019 21:46

just got back from Eurocamp - budget 100 E a day (paid for petrol and general food shop as extra as would have got these in the UK anyway)

PumpkinPie2016 · 21/08/2019 21:48

We recently had two weeks in Cornwall in a cottage and spent about £1600 but we are out quite a bit. We had been through a tough couple of months and DH's aunt passed away a few weeks before the holiday so we just wanted to totally relax.

We are going to the Lake District in Oct half term for a week in a cottage and will probably budget £50 ish a day but we cook in the cottage more and do lots of walks. Just a different type of holiday.

Lc2006 · 21/08/2019 21:57

I've been contemplating this today as we've just booked our holiday for next year. Family of 5 booked all inclusive.

I've had a look at the excursions that are available as we like to get out and do things on holiday and priced up what we're likely to want to do, that comes to a little under £500.

Going to take another £500 just in case but don't plan on spending a lot of it. I'll let the kids buy a couple of small souvenirs as we're wondering round the local shops/markets but if all our food, drink and activities are covered we really shouldn't need to spend anything more.

Lc2006 · 21/08/2019 22:00

We also had 7 days in Devon a few weeks back and spent £800 but that included food and days out

which1 · 21/08/2019 22:00

Take a small amount of cash to cover things like buying bottles of water but other than that, everything goes on Halifax Clarity Card as that's the cheapest way to pay. So card vs cash is the same as when at home ie. under a few pounds in cash, over, put it on the card.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/08/2019 22:09

We never take actual money just whatever euros we have leftover from last time, and then use the right card (see Moneysavingexpert) to pay for meals, shopping, excursions and cash withdrawals while there.

For 2 of us eating out every day for a week, and buying an unhealthy amount of beer, crisps, olives and cava from the supermarket, it probably costs around £3-400.

We'd expect it to be a lot less if AI and loads more when we're diving if we pay for it while there (about 2-400 euro per person per 5/6 days diving).

It totally depends on what you want to do and how you do food and drink. Excursions and activities can be expensive. Meals out can be expensive if you like multiple courses, cocktails and naice restaurants or be quite reasonable if you go for a lunch deal and a moderate amount of beer or wine.

Jinglejanglefish · 21/08/2019 22:12

We generally just take our debit cards and try not to go crazy.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/08/2019 22:14

For clarity, it's just me and DP so no DC and we wouldn't go anywhere that looked 'expensive' so an average meal and drinks for the pair of us is usually around 30-60 euro - we usually go to Spain (incl Balerics and Canaries or Malta).

Friend was telling me about when she and her DH went to Corsica and it was unusual if a meal for the pair of them came to less than 100 euro, but they drink wine not beer and might have more than one course while we will have one course and beer and drink and snack in accomodation before or after on balcony instead.

Ohpleasenotnow · 21/08/2019 22:14

Thanks everyone for the responses so far. Just to clarify...when I say spending money, I just mean budgeted spending money on a card with just a bit of cash.

Wherever we go we take credit card, debit cards, £200 and another £200 in local currency. That's for just for the two of us.

unicorncupcake · 21/08/2019 22:19

City break where you’re eating out a lot-£100 each per day probably. We’ve just got back from a week self catering in Devon and spent about £800 but that included diesel and food for all us for a family of four (300 mile trip each way) and cheapish activities and lunch out each day. We don’t tend to eat out in the evenings on holiday, DH loves to cook so we always go self catering.

nikkylou · 21/08/2019 22:30

I can't say I've budgeted for that much but actually was really surprised how much we spent, just me and my partner in north wales!
Self-catering, it was 100 for food, including a bottle of spirits each though for the week, and with the intention of eating out 2 nights.
It was lunch / coffees that cost the most. £15 - 25 for lunch with coffee and then another drink at some point.
We didn't do a "big" attraction but went out every day, and even 5 - 10 entrance fees per person add up.
Realistically we spent about 400 for two, but while I don't go all out, I don't like to feel like I'm scrimping.
I think wherever you plan to go, it's worth looking at some of the attractions you plan on viewing and budget with them in mind, potentially as your average day, unless its particularly one of attraction.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 21/08/2019 22:36

I take £200 in local currency for tips and taxis, maybe £30 if in the UK and spend on our credit cards. I have an abroad one for good fx rates and no fees and a UK one for cashback.

EmpressJewel · 21/08/2019 22:36

£100 a day plus an extra £100 for a family of 4 self catering in the Mediterranean for a week.

When you are on holiday, it’s easy to get carried away with spending because you are more relaxed. Plus you end up paying tourist prices on stuff which is normally at inflated prices.

£100 a day works well for us as we use the money wisely - saving in some areas to splurge in other:”
I pack snacks for the children in our suitcases the foods they like are sold at premium prices in resorts.

Hotel supermarkets will sell food at inflated prices (€2 for a loaf of bread), so we find a local supermarket to stock up in (€1 for the same loaf for example). We eat breakfast and sometimes lunch in our self catering apartment.
I bought a couple of pool toys in the UK and we take them away with us every year.

If you go away with a tour operator, their excursions are often more expensive than local company’s. It’s worth shopping around.

We keep a loose eye on what we are spending, but don’t feel deprived as we manage it well.

myeyeisblack · 21/08/2019 22:39

We did AI in May and took £300
We are doing self catering on Tuesday in Spain and are budgeting around £2,300.
That's for 2 adults and four kids.
