To ask how much holiday spending money to take?

Ohpleasenotnow · 21/08/2019 21:26

On different types of holidays (and yes, I'm expecting somebody to say everybody's budget is different...but nonetheless).

How much spending money (for food and activities) would you take per week for a family of four on:

A European holiday home rental holiday?
A city break?
An all inclusive holiday?
A Eurocamp type holiday?

I'm just tired of going on holiday and feeling like we've never budgeted properly to get the full experience of being there.

2 adults & 2 teenagers, I budget £100 per day plus an extra £150 per week. Day to day I am the queen of budgets and meal planning however on holiday the DCs know I'm easy peasy anything goes. We always overspend, I refuse to scrimp on holiday I do that when we come back after the overspend Grin

duckling84 · 21/08/2019 22:48

£20 per person per day is what I always budget whatever the holiday (though its always self catering or room only, we never go all inclusive as we are a large family)

fussygalore118 · 21/08/2019 22:58

We are of to a villa in spain in a couple of weeks. 2 adults, one teenager one 6 year old we are taking about 2.5k spending money. Will eat in for breakfast and most lunches but out for dinner every night:)

Floralnomad · 21/08/2019 23:01

Whenever I go anywhere I work on £100 per day , and that’s for myself and dd (20). Sometimes I spend more , sometimes less but that’s the ballpark home or abroad .

Cherrysoup · 21/08/2019 23:04

A week in Greece cost me 340€, just for drinks, boat rides to beaches, sun beds, lunch and evening meals.

A family member budgeted 150€ a day for her, her dh and 3 dc. She went over this several times.

stucknoue · 21/08/2019 23:12

Holiday home rental £100 a day, city break £200 if eating all meals out, eurocamp similar to self catering, ai less if it really is ai as it's only for sightseeing

SoLost101 · 21/08/2019 23:16

A European holiday home rental holiday? £1000
A city break? £700
An all inclusive holiday? £500
A Eurocamp type holiday? £700

I recently spent 1k while in a all inclusive holiday in Mexico but that was for 2 weeks.

MamaGee09 · 21/08/2019 23:24

For holidays we budget for £100 a day and that’s for a family of four , some days we eat out or we do an activity / day out. SOmetimes we spend over £100 a day and others we don’t spend money anywhere near our budget.

NoSauce · 21/08/2019 23:25

Take very little in the way of actual money, just use the debit card while we’re there.

boredboredboredboredbored · 22/08/2019 07:16

We stayed in our own villa this year in menorca for a week. Took €140 per day for 2 adults 2 teens and came home with £300. That included fuel, eating out once per day and supermarket food.

We are in Italy at the moment and there is 4 of us and myself and my Ds have a card that use abroad can't remember the name without getting it but you top it up from your account and it is cheaper than using your normal bank card or cc as you get better rates .We have budgeted a about £1,200 for 10 days whether we use it or go over EmpressJewel you are so right there about being inflated being tourists and it being inflated. My DS (adult) is very savvy so he is doing the budgeting else it is easy to get carried away .

SongforSal · 23/08/2019 07:53

I'm currently on an AI for 2 weeks in Zante. Took £600. We have a boat trip today and another next week. Eating out a few times is fairly inexpensive. 8 Euro here and there for sunbeds. A few euros here and there for bus rides, local shops.

SongforSal · 23/08/2019 07:54

I forgot to say that is for 2 adults and 2 teenagers.

Ithinkmycatisevil · 23/08/2019 07:58

I normally budget £1000 for a week self catering in Europe for 4 of us. That’s pays for all food and trips.

TOADfan · 23/08/2019 08:04

My and my DH are doing 10 days in Spain AL and bringing just over €1200. We like to budget €100 a day. We are all inclusive but that's mainly for 1 meal a day and water/drinks at the pool. We still go out every night and eat out at least once a day.
We don't like to be stuck in the hotel just because we are AL.

NoSauce · 23/08/2019 08:15

When people are saying we took x amount etc do you actually take the money in your purse?

thesunwillout · 23/08/2019 08:19

What are these pre payment cards, I'm taking cash euros to Greece, bit wonder if there's a simpler/safer way .
Not sure on debit card charges.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 23/08/2019 08:26

We don’t camp so no idea on that. If all inclusive for two weeks, I’d say around 1500 to allow for excursions etc. If food not included then a lot more, even more so if Disney. We try and ensure we do everything we want too so no regrets when home but we save hard and spend little on nights out at home etc to balance it out.

NoSauce and sun

Everything you need to know is here:

www.moneysavingexpert.com/credit-cards/travel-credit-cards/

Short version is you want a Starling account and a credit card (I have a Santander Zero but there's Halifax Clarity and maybe some others) for backup and to leave the hire car deposit. I just put some money that I think will cover our spending and extra for anything unexpected in the Starling account.

No charges whatsoever, except any locally imposed cash machine charges that apply to all cards and are hard to avoid in some places and a better exchange rate than buying Euros in the UK.

NoSauce · 23/08/2019 08:32

Thank you for that info Barbara, it’s very helpful.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 23/08/2019 08:35

We are going for 8 days to a villa in Bali just before Xmas. We're going to take about $3000 AUD as we intend to eat out lots, hire a driver for sightseeing, do some shopping and have lots of massages! Probably won't spend it all though, Bali is pretty cheap. That's for three of us.

It does depend where you are going though. When we lived in Europe we liked going to Greece, Turkey and Eastern Europe as they were all pretty cheap. Might be different now though.

AuntieMarys · 23/08/2019 08:35

£150 a day for 2 of us . We have a Halifax Clarity card which we use abroad as well.

TOADfan · 23/08/2019 08:43

I always bring cash. A lot of bars still don't take card and I don't want to be charged at cash machines plus god forbid anything happens to your debit card when away. I bring it for emergencies but don't plan on using it.

DeedleTwee · 23/08/2019 08:50

To be honest I budget about £100 a day for a family of 3 regardless of country or type of holiday. I just adjust our expectations. So £100 a day in a self catering apartment will mean we have less for activities. £100 a day all inclusive would mean the money is mainly for shopping and activities. Haven't been camping or all inclusive since I was a child.

EmpressJewel · 24/08/2019 10:18

On the other end of the scale, SIL mentioned that she had booked weeks AI for her and two primary school aged children and was taking €100 as that all she could afford and thought it would be fine.

OH gave her another £100 as he was concerned she would need a bit more.

When she came back, she said that she managed. It worked out as €30 a day and they didn't have to pay for food or drink as it was included.
