To not buy new school shoes?

Soymocha · 21/08/2019 11:02

DS still fits into his school shoes which he wore before they broke up for summer. Yes, they are a bit scuffed but otherwise in good condition. No holes or tears and still fit with a half cm gap. DH thinks I'm being stingy not buying a new pair for start of school in a couple of weeks. I just don't see the point. I think it makes more sense for him to continue wearing his current pair until they are worn or no longer fit, then we get a new pair. Okay, he isn't going to have shiny new shoes for start of term but he doesn't care, nor do I. His uniform is a combo of new, old and secondhand and we haven't bought anything new as they still fit. So not sure why the same logic doesn't apply to shoes. Who is BU? Growing up, I only had new shoes purchased for me if I needed them as we didn't have much money so I appreciate that I've never grown up with the tradition of new academics year, new shoes, pencil case etc.

I don’t buy new just for September unless they’re needed. You can always buy shoes in October or any other month as needed.

SuchAToDo · 21/08/2019 11:05

If his shoes still fit and and the only thing wrong with them is scuffs, then use them...you can always buy new shoes later if and when he needs them...just get a cheap shoe polish and rub over the scuffs so that his shoes look like new

TeacupDrama · 21/08/2019 11:06

he will grow soon anyway they sell school shoes all year round as kids grow at times other than summer holidays
new for new school year is a marketing ploy

Anotherusefulname · 21/08/2019 11:07

I always buy new shoes for September. Then I know they will be ok for the worst weather.
Everything else I get depends on size and state of repair. This year neither have needed PE trainers. One didn't need a tracksuit.
But shoes are my non negotiable.

GruciusMalfoy · 21/08/2019 11:07

If they're still in very wearable condition then I think it's fine. Could you polish them up a bit?

HeyYouWhatToDo · 21/08/2019 11:09

DD is going back with her old shoes.they look great condition (patent so don't scuff as easy) and still fit.

She's getting towards the end and will probably outgrow them by Christmas, but if I bought her the next size up now they'd be too big, and buying same size now would still only last until Christmas!!!

We only buy new once they have outgrown or they look worn out.

implantsandaDyson · 21/08/2019 11:09

I don't buy new just because its September. I've just looked at my 8 year olds uniform from June. It's fine, between that and some shirts a relative has passed down - she's all sorted. I usually replace shoes when they don't fit, we'll have a look at everything again when she stops for Halloween.

mogtheexcellent · 21/08/2019 11:10

Im polishing up dds scuffed shoes. They were new in april and still fit fine so no need to buy new yet.

Greenglassteacup · 21/08/2019 11:13

I don’t understand why anyone would buy new shoes shoes if the old ones still fit perfectly well and they don’t have holes in etc. More money than sense

SirJamesTalbotAndHisSpeculum · 21/08/2019 11:15

Heavens.

Of course you're not BU.

If the shoes still fit why would you buy new ones? A waste of money. it isn't even as though your DS is asking for new shoes.

Your DH is BU.

Gatehouse77 · 21/08/2019 11:15

I would only ever replace what was needed and not 'just because'. You can call me stingy, thrifty, mean, unfair or anything similar but it doesn't make sense to me to spend money on things that are still working/useable.
On a different note, I think it sends a bizarre message about consumerism and value for money to go down the route of replacing things for such a arbitrary reason as it's a new term.

RainOrSun · 21/08/2019 11:17

Shoes are bought when they are needed. If the shoes fit, why buy new?

LollyBmummy3 · 21/08/2019 11:23

My 2 eldest needed new shoes at beginning of June. Dc10 shoes were tight, dc6 were wrecked, they also needs new trousers as they were too short/wrecked. School finished at the end of June and the shoes&trousers were In good condition so I didn’t buy new ones. They didn’t care. Their bags were fine too, i put them in the Washing machine to freshen them up. I only bought new polos and and jumpers, 2 polos and jumpers were from the supermarket and the other 2 from school shop. It didn’t cost me a lot of money and my kids were fine with it. Don’t spend unnecessarily, I’m sure your kid won’t care.

Pascha · 21/08/2019 11:28

Both my children had new shoes at Easter. I've just checked they still fit and they look fine so they'll do probably til Christmas now.

Ds1 needs bigger pe kit and a new coat and ds2 just needs new pe trainers. Other than that they are just going on with last terms stuff.

anothermansmother · 21/08/2019 11:29

Both my ds and dd are going back in the same shoes, both needed new 3 weeks before term ended. I've given them both s good coat of shoe polish and new laces for my ds and they look like new.

Yabbers · 21/08/2019 11:31

DD wears AFO splints, she only gets new shoes when she gets new splints or when she goes through the toes of her old ones. I used to be lucky if a pair of school shoes lasted a term but now she’s older they last much longer.

bridgetreilly · 21/08/2019 11:33

It would be ridiculous to buy him new shoes just because it's September. If nothing else, think of the environmental damage every single new thing we insist on having does. Get him new shoes when he's grown out of the old ones, or when they are no longer fit for purpose, not because of the time of year. Same for all school uniform. Same for all school things. It's fine to look at what they've got and see what needs replacing, but it is ludicrous to just replace everything, no matter what.

Anotherusefulname · 21/08/2019 11:34

I have to add that having been a TA for many years I think this is an area thing.
Interestingly in my experience the more deprived the demographic the more likely children are to have new things for September. And are all very keen to show them off "Miss look I got new...." those are the ones whose uniforms and shoes are too small and falling apart by June.
In the much more well off area I work in now things are more likely to be replaced and the children are as well kitted out in July as they were September.

Chickenish · 21/08/2019 11:35

Yanbu. Polish up his old shoes. He’ll probably grow out of them soon enough.

Alwaysgrey · 21/08/2019 11:36

We’re getting new shoes as one had a pair of holes in the sole and the other has outgrown. Same with bags. One goes back with the same. The other has a new one as other bag broke. Uniform I’ve bought a few new polo tops but nothing else. I think in this country we’re quick to buy new. And it does no good for our planet.

whattodowith · 21/08/2019 11:36

I have always bought new school shoes generally in the size above with insoles so they will last the whole school year. They are usually absolutely battered by July with scuffs and such but no holes because I buy good brands.

I wouldn’t make them wear the same scuffed school shoes again in September. Maybe I’m just being snobby.

mummyof2boys30 · 21/08/2019 11:38

I always buy a full new set for September of everything inc shoes. Tho that will last them the entire year and by the end of June they are normally in bad condition. Mine only have logo jumpers tho so rest is just from tesco/asda etc.

youvegottobekidding · 21/08/2019 11:38

I was going to get DD new school shoes, until DH said she doesn’t need new ones, I thought he was being a bit stingy, until I had a proper look at them, they’re still in good condition apart from a scratch or 2 & they still fit her so no need for new ones. She can wear these while the weather will be rubbish for the upcoming months & we’ll get her a new pair when needed. Her blazer is still in reasonable condition also so we’re not buying that new either, uniforms cost can add up so if it doesn’t need to be new, why buy it just because it’s a new school year, buy it when it no longer fits them or it’s falling apart!

Thehop · 21/08/2019 11:40

I replace what needs replacing as it wears out or is outgrown, I don’t give a stuff what month it is! YANBU at all!

KUGA · 21/08/2019 11:42

If they fit I don`t see the point in buying new ones.
And even if they are scuffed a bit of polish will sort.
You could buy a new pair and they could get scuffed on the first wear.
