To not buy new school shoes?

DS still fits into his school shoes which he wore before they broke up for summer. Yes, they are a bit scuffed but otherwise in good condition. No holes or tears and still fit with a half cm gap. DH thinks I'm being stingy not buying a new pair for start of school in a couple of weeks. I just don't see the point. I think it makes more sense for him to continue wearing his current pair until they are worn or no longer fit, then we get a new pair. Okay, he isn't going to have shiny new shoes for start of term but he doesn't care, nor do I. His uniform is a combo of new, old and secondhand and we haven't bought anything new as they still fit. So not sure why the same logic doesn't apply to shoes. Who is BU? Growing up, I only had new shoes purchased for me if I needed them as we didn't have much money so I appreciate that I've never grown up with the tradition of new academics year, new shoes, pencil case etc.

I buy only when they are outgrown or scuffed . This year one of mine of starting high school so has new everything, the plan is they will hopefully last at least 2 years maybe 3.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to show this to DH! Will dig out the polish and smarten up the shoes! Glad to know I'm not BU! X

Ds3 (5) had the temerity to grow out of his school shoes three weeks before the summer holidays so he's definitely not getting new shoes.

The others need more shoes. The PE kit only gets replaced once outgrown, ditto for the blazer. Shirts and trousers get replaced regardless.

AnneElliott · 21/08/2019 20:32

DS is going back wearing his school shoes which still fit. Only chuck them out once they are too small or have holes. Otherwise it's such a waste.

toptomatoes · 21/08/2019 20:41

We got our children’s feet measured and none of them need new shoes. Two had new shoes when needed mid year. They all look fine, so we’ll wait to get new when they need new. I’ve replaced trousers/dresses/tops that are too small, worn or stained, but if it’s ok then it stays.

GreenTulips · 21/08/2019 20:43

Kids get new shirts in April/May when the weathers warmer and they look bright white.
DD schools shoes still fit, bit had bigger skirts
DS needed new shoes as he’s grown 2 sizes, he also needs new blazer as his is split.

Both PE kits are fine.

DD is keeping her bag and pencil case, DS wrecked his and needed new.

I wouldn’t overspend for the sake of it

StockTakeFucks · 21/08/2019 20:50

Only thing I bought new were tights, swimming costume and hat and a pencil case. Everything else still fits and is in good condition.

Whathappenedtothelego · 21/08/2019 20:51

I'm not getting new shoes either - they still fit, so new shoes not needed.
In fact, one DC isn't getting anything new, everything still just about fits.

I'm not replacing perfectly usable clothes just because it's September.

Everything will be clean and pressed and shoes polished.

If I were you, I'd spend a bit of effort cleaning and polishing the shoes, but I wouldn't buy new ones.

CMOTDibbler · 21/08/2019 20:52

I only buy new stuff if it is outgrown or totally wrecked. DS will be getting a new pencil case and blazer (3" above his wrists), and thats it. I'd never spend money replacing perfectly good uniform just because its September

iMatter · 21/08/2019 21:00

I don't replace unless they're too small

We polish shoes almost every day and they still look as good as the day we bought them

Rockbird · 21/08/2019 21:03

Both my dds have school shoes that still fit. DD1 is going to secondary and at the moment still has her Harry Potter Asda shoes from the tail end of year 6. I wanted to get her some more grown up shoes for year 7 but we agreed it was probably better to start with what she has, then she can see what others are wearing for when we replace them.

DD2 is going into year 3 and the only thing she's getting is a new pencil case!

LittleGinBigGin · 21/08/2019 21:18

I only buy as and when needed.

Dc2 kills school shoes so has 3/4 pairs a year. Dc1 gets new ones once outgrown!! So maybe 2 pairs a year if that.

I ended up at the start of June buying a lot of new stuff as both dc decided to grow. So most of their stuff will be what they had new then.

Seems such a waste of money otherwise

Isithometimeyet0987 · 21/08/2019 21:35

My mums always got us new everything for September from uniforms, shoes and bags right down to pencil cases and most things in them. So I think i’m just used to it my DD is only going into nusery in September but I bought her the full uniform, new shoes, bag etc. but maybe I’m just doing it because my mum did, there’s nothing wrong with keeping it if it’s not wrecked and that’s what you want to do though.

StockTakeFucks · 21/08/2019 21:39

What happened to the old ones?

LavenderAndBeeswax · 21/08/2019 21:39

Agree, more money than sense and bad for the environment to replace when not too small or worn out.

PumpkinPie2016 · 21/08/2019 21:44

I think it's fine not to buy new if they still fit and are in decent condition. Just polish them.

I just wish my son didn't grow like a bloody weed! Bought new shoes in Feb as he had outgrown the ones from Sept (when he started school) but have had to buy new as his feet have grown almost a full size Sad

DanielRicciardosSmile · 21/08/2019 21:44

DS is going to school in his shoes from last term. He's quite heavy on shoes so he'll probably be due new ones after half term but there's easily 7 or 8 weeks worth of wear left in these as they were bought after Easter.

formerbabe · 21/08/2019 21:51

My dc are getting new shoes become one is off to secondary so needs a much smarter pair...and my dds shoes are really worn out.

If their shoes were fine, they'd still be wearing them.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 22/08/2019 07:59

We buy the best quality we can afford and use them until they are worn out, handing them down between children if there is still wear in them. My own shoes are years (decades in some cases) old. I wouldn't dream of replacing my own shoes after just one year and don't with the children unless they need it.

feelingverylazytoday · 22/08/2019 08:17

I've always bought shoes and clothes as needed. That goes for school uniform as well as out of school clothes, including my own (with the exception of birthday/Christmas presents).
In my son's senior school they used to get 'cool points' for things like scruffy shoes and blazers. It was the kids who wore sparkling new uniforms who used to get picked on, so they were'nt complaining too much.

Sirzy · 22/08/2019 08:23

Ds is getting new shoes because he has worn down the heels again (of doc martins, I don’t know how he does it). That’s all he is having new through as it’s all that needs replacing

SoyDora · 22/08/2019 08:26

DD1 isn’t having new ones, they fit perfectly and are in good condition. I’ve polished the minor scuffs out.
I just don’t see the sense in replacing things that are fit for purpose, just because they’ve had 6 weeks off school! Nonsensical.

gigglingHyena · 22/08/2019 08:38

Jumpers were the one thing I tended to end up buying, i suppose they'd not worn them much for the last couple of months, but almost always when we tried them on they were too small at the end of August.
Both children now refuse to wear jumpers at all, so haven't needed to buy those for a while.

I have bought new shorts for DS, his current ones are fine but he wears them year round, finding shorts in Feb was not easy, so hoping I'm more prepared this year.

gingergiraffe · 22/08/2019 09:44

Children have growth spurts. Mine usually had two pairs of school shoes a year as and when they needed them. One year my son had a new pair of summer shoes , and his feet stayed the same size for a long time meaning that he wore them for the following summer too. Had they been too small or worn out I would have replaced them. Kids’ shoes are not cheap so make the most of not needing new ones. He may grow out of the next pair very quickly.

InglouriousBasterd · 22/08/2019 09:50

I was thinking ‘fine of course’ until I saw half a cm gap - that’s tiny. 5mm toe movement?
