To put washing on at 10pm

We are in a holiday let in the UK. It is the top two floors of a house as a self contained flat. We arrived today after spending five days elsewhere and the first thing I did when we arrived at 10pm was put a load of washing on. Well I did not know that this was going to be the noisiest washing machine known to mankind. Literally wall shakingly loud. Ours at home in quiet so it didn’t even occur to me. Anyway luckily I only put the 1 hour 20 min economy wash on and not the three house intensive clean as as it was reaching the even louder than the previous bit crescendo there was a knocking at the door. Internal door so must be the downstairs neighbour but I was literally bf youngest child back to sleep at this point so couldn’t answer it and Dh was asleep. (Yes he can sleep through anything even the burglar alarm so a washing machine wasn’t going to stop him). Anyway at that moment the machine stopped and they went away. I am so embarrassed. I am now going to have to avoid them in the hallway for the whole week aren’t I? Or apologise.

Quick note of apology through the door tomorrow explaining that you didn’t realise it would be so loud, why you didn’t answer the door, and that it won’t happen again. Simple. And I would appreciate that very much had I been your neighbour.

SnowsInWater · 21/08/2019 00:03

As above. Don't leave yourself feeling awkward all week 😊

PumpkinP · 21/08/2019 00:07

I’ve just put
My machine on now! Luckily I’m in a gf maisonette so I doubt my upstairs neighbours will hear 🤷‍♀️ I can see why you wouldn’t have thought about it, I’m surprised they knocked on the door as a one off I wouldn’t have said anything.

Tonnerre · 21/08/2019 00:23

Why didn't you just switch it off when you realised how loud it was?

poolblack · 21/08/2019 00:41

Indeed. You are in a flat above someone's house. You really shouldn't have let it run full cycle.

opinionatedfreak · 21/08/2019 00:42

Apology note.

The poor neighbours will have to put up with all sorts of nonsense from people who are "only there for a few days"

My building has an airbnb it's really difficult -noisy music (live violin tonight!!), bad rubbish disposal, contamination of the block recycling bin.

It really pisses those of us who live here all the time off.

Dippypippy1980 · 21/08/2019 00:48

But why didn’t you switch it off? You knew it was disturbing the neighbours, but you let it run until well passed eleven.

AlexaAmbidextra · 21/08/2019 00:51

How on earth did you think it was ok to let it run for the entire one hour and twenty minutes when it was so loud? How bloody inconsiderate.

Hopefullyendsmeet · 21/08/2019 00:57

What kind of self entitled twattish person puts on a was at 10.30p?

Even if you’re used to a quieter machine, YABVVU to think that others can’t hear it if you’re in a block of flats.

Don’t do it again.

Topsecretidentity · 21/08/2019 01:01

What kind of self entitled twattish person puts on a was at 10.30p?

Someone who needs clothes for the next day and wasn't able to do a wash earlier in the day? Mumsnet users are so dramatic sometimes Hmm

Aquamarine1029 · 21/08/2019 01:10

Be an adult and just go knock on their door and apologise. No big deal.

Hopefullyendsmeet · 21/08/2019 01:16

@Topsecretidentity

So needing to put on a wash trumps other people’s right to a peaceful night? Okaaaay

Imknackeredzzz · 21/08/2019 01:31

Let me get this straight you were aware it was “bone shakingly loud” and yet you still let it run for the full hour and 20 minutes rather than switch it off?! What’s wrong with you?!

purplebutterfly90 · 21/08/2019 01:52

Jeepers, some people need to calm down. Such rude responses! The OP is clearly sorry! Acting all butt hurt like it was your sleep being disturbed.

WishingILivedOnAnIsland · 21/08/2019 02:06

I'd slip an apology under their door and be more careful with sounds from now on.

Not sure why you didn't pause it TBH.

Spacerader · 21/08/2019 02:29

Only on mn will you find the op getting a hard time because they made some noise that was over before midnight and a one off, making them inconsiderate and selfish. Yet if the neighbours are having a loud party all night keeping everyone awake then you are a bore who needs to get over it because it is a one off.

Op jut forget it, it’s done now. Either apologise if you see them tomorrow or slip a note under the door. It’s not the end of the world.

RocketRacoonsFurryBalls · 21/08/2019 02:31

Is it an indesit?

I briefly had one recently. Like a bloody pneumatic drill! I’m in a top flat, so not funny for the guy downstairs or my poor floorboards.

Sent it back, got one with a quiet mark instead.

Defo send a note to explain and apologise.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your hol!

Cassilis · 21/08/2019 03:58

No need to feel embarrassed. Just explain in a note or in person saying what first poster (user146) said.

BlackCatSleeping · 21/08/2019 04:02

I agree, why on earth didn’t you just switch it off?

It’s probably unbalanced. You should really report it to the owners to get it sorted.

Feel really sorry for the neighbors.

Cassilis · 21/08/2019 04:05

I’ve never switched off a washing machine mid-cycle in my life. I’d be afraid of it flooding or something.

BlackCatSleeping · 21/08/2019 04:10

Most washing machines have a pause button. You can then wait until the day time and it will continue where it left off.

stargazer2030 · 21/08/2019 04:10

I have never turned a washing machine off mid cycle either for the same reason.
My washing at home is really quiet so it wouldn’t have occurred to me either.
A note of apology or just explaining if you bump into them would be nice though.

Idontwanttotalk · 21/08/2019 04:16

I would put washing on in my own home at 10 p.m. if I wanted to as my machine is also quiet. I wouldn't dream of doing so if I lived in a flat.
Just apologise tomorrow and I'm sure it will be fine.

ShippingNews · 21/08/2019 04:50

If you turn a machine off mid-cycle absolutely nothing bad will happen
It will just stop, and when you turn it on again the next day it will finish the load.

My modern block of flats has a noise cut off at 21:00 in the leases (leasehold block). We also have an active residents management company that each leaseholder is bought into that is responsible for the running of the block. This company has a paid administrator.

In modern society there is an increasing trend to say "what the fuck I needed to do washing so they will have to lump it"
(Not saying this applied to OP but some of responses have made me a bit Confused)

The consequences in this block of not adhering to the legal obligations in your lease are that ultimately you can forfeit your flat.

Yes, that is right a flat you own.
It would be a long drawn it process but it could be done for repeated infringements.

In this block if you are a tenant taking the piss the mgt company (i.e. The paid administrator) collated negative feedback & forward it to the owners.

Most of the time (we have had 2 troublesome tenants in five years out of 50 flats) the landlord has chosen not to renew the lease.

Why would they risk their property because a tenant is being a twat.

Last person it happened to wrote a vitriolic email about how mgt company had lost him his tenancy. The property manager (who doesn't live here and never met him) wrote him an email back pointing out he had done that by himself by continually practising his drumming late at night despite multiple contacts asking him not to and patient explanations about the restrictive covenants in the lease etc.
