To put washing on at 10pm

We are in a holiday let in the UK. It is the top two floors of a house as a self contained flat. We arrived today after spending five days elsewhere and the first thing I did when we arrived at 10pm was put a load of washing on. Well I did not know that this was going to be the noisiest washing machine known to mankind. Literally wall shakingly loud. Ours at home in quiet so it didn’t even occur to me. Anyway luckily I only put the 1 hour 20 min economy wash on and not the three house intensive clean as as it was reaching the even louder than the previous bit crescendo there was a knocking at the door. Internal door so must be the downstairs neighbour but I was literally bf youngest child back to sleep at this point so couldn’t answer it and Dh was asleep. (Yes he can sleep through anything even the burglar alarm so a washing machine wasn’t going to stop him). Anyway at that moment the machine stopped and they went away. I am so embarrassed. I am now going to have to avoid them in the hallway for the whole week aren’t I? Or apologise.

You can always hear washing machines. My stepdaughter, I won’t say dear cos she’s been an absolute nightmarish cow for the 19 years I’ve been with her dad, she was absolutely incensed that I wouldn’t let her do a wash at night. It’s inconsiderate to the people we live next door to. Between 9am and 6pm is when I do a wash. You should have stopped the cycle. It was rude. You should definitely apologise.

Yes YWBU don't be that twat

Cherrysoup · 21/08/2019 23:36

Could you not have waited til the morning? YABU.

avamiah · 21/08/2019 23:46

Yes OP could of just waited till the next morning to put the washing in as 10pm is pretty late to be honest and it’s not as if the clothes were needed in the next couple of hours .

Mumtotwo82 · 22/08/2019 20:27

If you don't normally live in a flat I would probably say sorry and you didn't think as you can at your home. I live in a top floor flat and wouldn't dream of putting a wash on at 10pm but I've been a top floor flat dweller for 10 years. I'd be forgiving you if you just explained and said sorry. Smile

Cassilis · 23/08/2019 14:41

@avamiah but she maybe wanted the clothes to dry overnight.

When I lived in a flat I never heard my neighbours let alone their washing machine.

PumpkinP · 24/08/2019 00:53

I’ve never heard my upstairs neighbours washing machine (it’s about the only thing I don’t hear from them Hmm ) it’s ridiculous to not do a wash after 6 plenty of people are just getting home from work at that time.

avamiah · 24/08/2019 02:09

Cassilis,
Yes maybe your right but surely she could of waited till at least 5/6 am when people are getting up for work and the sun starts to shine.

Krisskrosskiss · 24/08/2019 02:12

Idve done the same op and I'd have sympathy for anyone doing it next door.... if it's a one off event I'd assume it was an emergency... sometimes people do need to do washing in the middle of the night. As long as it's not something being done all the time by someone who just doesnt care then I think it's something not to get worked up about.

Legomadx2 · 24/08/2019 02:13

I obsessed by doing washing but think you WBVU OP.

Who puts a wash on at 10pm?

Not ok

avamiah · 24/08/2019 02:41

Yes nobody puts a wash in at 10 pm in a new place / holiday home etc.
If that was me and I had a emergency then I would knock at my next door neighbours and explain the situation .

OneStepSideways · 24/08/2019 16:55

I've always used my washing machine late evening/early morning even when we lived in flats. Never had any complaints. When else are you supposed to do laundry if you work full time?

SweatyYeti · 24/08/2019 20:25

What's the point of it so late when it would fester in the machine until morning when you put it out? It'd still take approx the day to dry so you may aswell put it on first thing in the morning! YWBU and generally inconsiderate and not following the unspoken rule/ etiquette of no noisy noise after 10pm.

Fatted · 24/08/2019 20:33

I live in a terrace and put my washing machine on after 10 at night. I've always done that. Put it on before I go to bed, DH hangs is out before work in the morning.

My parents put the washing and tumble dryer on at night so clothes are ready the next day.

I'm curious to know when people are supposed to do their washing if they work all day?!

mrswx · 24/08/2019 20:44

I thought most people put their washing machines on at night, is it not cheaper to run?
Our upstairs neighbours always have theirs running at night. I'd never complain - you can't really hear it unless your in the kitchen.

transformandriseup · 24/08/2019 21:02

Sorry I’m missing the point of the thread but it’s a leasehold flat I’m surprised the tenants are allowed to run an Airbnb.

Back to the question, ours in our flat was pretty loud and I wouldn’t have put it on after 10 but I wouldn’t have complained if I heard a neighbours either.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/08/2019 21:25

Not all washing machines are noisy. The one in the OP sounds knackered, as was ours and we didn't realise how bad it was until we decided to get a new one and you could hardly hear it plus it didn't chase you round the utility room like the old one. The OP wasn't to know this the first time she used it.

People use washing machines when they have time. There will be as many people annoyed by evening use as early morning use, so you just have to get on with doing what you need to do without tying yourself in knots about what all and sundry within earshot will be annoyed by

Ours often goes on in the evening in preparation to be hung up outside first thing in the morning because that's what works for us. It doesn't 'fester' overnight and line drying makes it fresher than drying inside or in a dryer, which ruins a lot of things anyway, so best avoided.

SweatyYeti · 26/08/2019 20:03

I work and put washing on when I get home, or on before I leave then hang up when I get home @fatted it's pretty simple!!!
