Should I be worried about strange eye symptoms - contact lens wearer, blacking out a bit?

I have been having strange symptoms for last 3 hours. Just wondering if I should be worried - or get a good night's sleep and see how I am in the morning?

My left eye's vision becomes obscured after I blink by what looks like a black ink splodge, which then recedes until I blink again. I am a contact lens wearer who swims every day; so may have got water in my eye.

At its worse it covers about 40% of my vision and recedes to almost nothing.

You wear them swimming Shock

scarecrowhead · 20/08/2019 23:12

I wear dailies to swim, with goggles, can't see a thing otherwise. Have you got eye floaters op ?

annielouise · 20/08/2019 23:13

I had floaters in the eye and it can be serious - something to do with the gel at the back of the eye and the retina pulling away? I can't remember. Get to the optician for an emergency appointment. The two I spoke to keep some appointments free just for an emergency.

Dodie66 · 20/08/2019 23:14

I think y9u need to be seen urgently. Sounds like a retinal detachment.
I had vision problems which turned out to be vitreous detachment and they told me to go back if I got anything like you described with a black area coming over my eye. I just looked up retinal detachment on the nhs website and it says to call 111 if you have those symptoms

Stressedout10 · 20/08/2019 23:14

Get to an optician asap I can't remember the name of the eye disease but there is one that causes blindness and starts with black splodges in the centre of your vision. The quicker its treated the better

EC22 · 20/08/2019 23:16

Toxoplasmosis can cause eye symptoms like you describe, you need a big whack of antibiotics if it’s that.

awmamma · 20/08/2019 23:16

OP please ring 111 ASAP, this sounds like retinal detachment

Butterflycookie · 20/08/2019 23:16

Can you get to a&e?

fluffygal · 20/08/2019 23:18

I had black splodges in my line of vision- it was eventually diagnosed as MEWDS or white dot syndrome. I was told it's common in females who are short sighted to get these dots, however most don't get them over the pupil so most don't notice they have it. Once they become inactive, the splodges go- took a few weeks but got my eyesight back. There was no treatment they were just monitored by the eye hospital.

ineedaholidaynow · 20/08/2019 23:21

I get floaters in my eye which aren't usually a problem, but I did get mine checked out when I had flashing light too as that can be a sign of retinal detachment. I had to go and get that seen to immediately as needs to be sorted asap if it is retinal detachment. Luckily it was ok. I was given a leaflet of things to look out for and I think losing a large part of your vision when you blink was one of them.

You need to ring for advice now. When it happened to me, during the day, I popped into my local optician and they refused to see me, said I needed to go to hospital immediately and couldn't drive as the drops they would put in my eye made it difficult to drive for a few hours.

fluffygal · 20/08/2019 23:21

Meant to say, I went to A&E with it as was worried about rental detachment and they could not diagnose me, they said it was migraines and said there was nothing they could do, just go home?? Total waste of my time.
I then went to the optician who could see the dots in my eyes as they have the equipment to see into your eye. A&E will have no specialist equipment, definitely go to the opticians.

Gottoloveabagel · 20/08/2019 23:31

Could be a detached retina, you need to be seen ASAP

Toomanyradishes · 20/08/2019 23:31

Its a possible sign of retinal detachment, google where your nearest emergency eye unit is and go there, dont go to the opticians they will send you to hospital as they cant do any thing

Gottoloveabagel · 20/08/2019 23:32

My sister was diagnosed in a&e and not allowed to leave, if it detaches there is no putting it back!

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 20/08/2019 23:34

Daft the to say but if you havent taken the lenses out already, then get them out immediately and dont put them in again until you have an answer!

IfThisWasOurHouse · 20/08/2019 23:35

Go to an a&e with an eye department. This could be retinal detachment. Get it (pardon the pun) seen to!

IfThisWasOurHouse · 20/08/2019 23:36

And not drive there! They'll need to put drops in to dilate your pupil (I'm a doctor that did a 4 month rotation in eye casualty although many years ago now)

jimmyhill · 20/08/2019 23:37

Go to emergency eye clinic asap!!!

loveyouradvice · 20/08/2019 23:39

thank u reading up does sound like possible detached retina

now need to decide whether to go to moor fields a & e now or after i have slept

bupa suggest expert advice within 24 hours - everyone else just says urgent

thoughts?

Wacadu · 20/08/2019 23:41

I'd go now. You could risk losing sight in that eye otherwise. It's classed as an emergency.

StripyHorse · 20/08/2019 23:41

OP Don't take any chances with your vision. You need to get that checked out. A and E if necessary.

To the PP who wears lenses while swimming, please reconsider, it is really risky. You can buy prescription goggles - either speak to your optician or look at Amazon.

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 20/08/2019 23:41

If it is a detached retina you need to go now. I believe every second counts to save your eyesight 💐

jimmyhill · 20/08/2019 23:43

Ring moorfields switchboard now and see what they say? 020 7253 3411

ineedaholidaynow · 20/08/2019 23:45

I was told to go to A&E immediately by the opticians. I had had a close family bereavement the day before, I was an emotional wreck having to go back into a hospital the next day. Luckily all was fine with my eye.

Can you get to the A&E easily?

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 20/08/2019 23:45

please go in, you really really cant dick around with your sight.
