Should I be worried about strange eye symptoms - contact lens wearer, blacking out a bit?

I have been having strange symptoms for last 3 hours. Just wondering if I should be worried - or get a good night's sleep and see how I am in the morning?

My left eye's vision becomes obscured after I blink by what looks like a black ink splodge, which then recedes until I blink again. I am a contact lens wearer who swims every day; so may have got water in my eye.

At its worse it covers about 40% of my vision and recedes to almost nothing.

Hello and thank you all

Seriously Mumsnet is amazing - full of knowledgeable generous women - it's now the first place I turn.

Absolutely right guys - I went to eye hospital A&E that night, and after 6 hours was diagnosed with a detached retina. Back in 8.30 in the morning, operated on in the afternoon as an emergency addition to the surgical list, and have just been in now for my day after check up and all is looking good so far.

Really sorry not to have updated earlier - I don't have Mumsnet sign up on my mobile (must change this!) and waited until I was back at a computer. Now got my feet up and about to watch some old episodes of Poldark.....

Has been a scarey couple of days and all of you have been amazing.

And the one thing I wished they'd told me at the hospital instead of just saying you'll have very blurry vision next day when you clean your eye to pop the drops in, is that the local anaesthetic can take a while to wear off..... I was greeted with an unmoving eyeball pointing sideways: I was terrified and thought everything had gone wrong, until I learnt that the muscles holding my eyeball in place were still "frozen" from the anaesthetic!

Oh my god that must've been scary. 😱
Alexa was right in that you had to go back at 8:30 but I still think you were right to go in ASAP just in case it was anything else.
So glad you got in quick and seen to.
Enjoy your recovery and Poldark 💐

Hate to say I told you so to all those who said this wouldn’t happen. 😄. I knew because I had a detached retina that was treated at Moorfields. Glad it’s sorted loveyouradvice. You’re right when you say about the warning about blurry vision the next day. Bit of an understatement. I lost the plot completely as I couldn’t see a thing when they took the pad off. Hope it continues to go well for you. 💐

Glad you got it sorted OP

Thank you for updating. So relived that you sought help! Moorfields ROCKS. They have saved my eyes from 2 serious injuries and 1 less serious one over the years.

Do absolutely everything they tell you to do and follow it to the letter. You will be fine. Rest up and take it easy in the meantime. Flowers
