agh- ruined daughter's new piercing?!

HELP posting for traffic

DD11 had lobe piercing done 8 weeks ago, all healing fine although right ear has been a little sore last couple of weeks. Just removed them tonight as thought had been long enough- they were v stiff and so wasn't able to do it as delicately as planned!

Left ear fine, right ear v red and oozy- there's an indent almost as if the earring had been in too tight?

What on earth do I do now? Putting earrings back in seems crazy but will they heal over if we leave them open? DH bemused and unhelpful about whole affair as he doesn't see the point in "unnecessary holes" [GRIN]

Thank you for mumsnet wisdom !

I'd clean with cool boiled salted water and put them back in. Bathe regularly without removing them.

dementedpixie · 20/08/2019 21:03

Why did you take them out?

bogoblin · 20/08/2019 21:19

I second the saltwater advice. Soaking in warm saltwater can ease pain and swelling, I've done it when I've had trouble with my nose piercing. If she wants to keep the piercings you need to put them back in but you can clean them without removing them. If there's any oozing that turns Crusty a bathe will loosen and soften it up so it can be removed. Hope that helps!

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 20/08/2019 21:21

If she wants to keep them, clean them thoroughly, poo the earring in boiling salted water, used cooled salted water to clean ear, pop earring back in and go and find an anti allergenic pair of studs for her, again, poo these into boiling water first unless stated they are sterile.

Saltedcaramel78 · 20/08/2019 21:22

@dementedpixie we took them out as it had been 8 weeks and she wanted to change to some new ones she'd got for her birthday. Most people seem to say you should wait 6 weeks and then fine to change?

Thanks will try saltwater bathing then put them back in before bed!

Popping your autocorrect isn't your friend tonight Grin

CupoTeap · 20/08/2019 21:24

Get clean ratings in as quickly as possible

CTRL · 20/08/2019 21:25

It’s happened to me before when I had my ears pierced by my friend but the piercing was slanted to the stud fit too snug.

Best thing is to find an earring/ small barbel made of surgical steel or Gold -if she isn’t allergic (real gold and not the fake stuff) and put it in the piercing and keep the piercing clean and once or twice a day do a salt water wash.

The only way to save the piercing otherwise putting the same tight stud in it will keep it sore, tender and oozing and it won’t heal.

You need a bar/ stud or earring that has enough room to move and give the swelling space and fresh air to cool down

Sweetdreamer93 · 20/08/2019 21:28

Order some sealed Caflon studs (they are sterile), turn them daily and keep the ears cleansed with cool boiled salt water twice a day.

Waveysnail · 20/08/2019 21:28

I'd go and get new studs - proper piercing studio may be the best

JacquesHammer · 20/08/2019 21:30

Clean with cooled boiled water.

Put earrings back in.

Don’t twist the earrings.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 20/08/2019 21:30

If it’s red and oozing, this indicates an infection.

Salt water every few hours, and if this doesn’t help within 24 hours she may need an antibiotic cream/medicine.

Tinyandpetite · 20/08/2019 21:31

Definitely bath in sea salt water. I had a dermal piercing on my cheek today, I’m using a pre made spray I got from the piercing place. Just an idea if you wanted something to keep in your handbag. Bath them twice a day. I hope they heal for her x

Saltedcaramel78 · 20/08/2019 21:32

@bogoblin ahah I didn't even see that in my panic, solid advice there @PoppingOneOutIn2020

Sealed sterile studs makes a lot of sense- yes I do think the earrings she had in weren't suitable! I can order those to be delivered tomorrow, should I put the old ones back in for now do you think?

@bogoblin what on earth have I done Blush why is there so much poo on my post!?

Why does pop turn to poo, in so sorry. I've given OP the wrong advice.

Please don't ingest then pass an earring, it will do more harm than good.

Duchessgummybuns · 20/08/2019 21:33

I have new piercings and I have the bar ones that screw on at the front, maybe swap to those? No crusty stuff and they’re surgical steel so don’t cause a reaction, my ears are very sensitive otherwise. A piercer would be my go to for advice, as long as your DD isn’t feeling unwell it’s likely just a mild irritation of the skin

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 20/08/2019 21:34

I would OP, unless you and her dont mind then healing over a little, might be abit sore to push some new ones back through with it being abit raw too.

If she can tolerate the earrings for one more night then it will keep them open enough until you get new sterile ones delivered, if you want sterile studs, look up 'studex' studs on Amazon, they're the ones j used for piercing. If I remember correctly they do an anti allergic metal on their and should sell them separately or in packs of 6/12.

Beamur · 20/08/2019 21:35

Put earrings back in if you can. Something similar happened to my DD. Piercings healed within 24 hours...
Keep daily bathing and the advice to turn daily has changed. Although I would say, unless earrings do turn without discomfort, don't take them out.

dustarr73 · 20/08/2019 21:36

Did she get them done in a piercing and tattoo parlour.Because usually they have an emergency number on.You could ring for advice.

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 20/08/2019 21:36

Sorry OP I read 7 days not 7 weeks, should be fine to leave them out for a night, will be abit tender to push back through if they're abit crusty and red though:)

CTRL · 20/08/2019 21:36

You need proper surgical steel earrings from a proper piercing shop.

Not the cheaper metal earrings from Clares accessories. In some cases the metal causes the body to reject the piercing and it will never heal properly.

AudacityOfHope · 20/08/2019 21:38

We had this. It looked dreadful but cleaning and savlon healed it by he next day! Keep the earrings in and keep on top of the cleaning. Make sure your daughter doesn't push the backs on too tight. Mine does and I regularly check them and pull them out a bit.

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 20/08/2019 21:39

I use these, I dug them out and was going to offer them to you as I wont use them anymore, but I've noticed a small Rio in the paper back so they wont be sterile anymore :( more than welcome to them as spares if you want them OP.

Put them back in. Currently the hole is acting as a drain so the infection can weep out but if it’s taken out and the whole heals over the infection will be trapped and infection may become worse. Pop them back in and treat with antiseptic cream until new earrings arrived tomorrow. Them continue to clean and turn the earrings

cookieoclock · 20/08/2019 21:44

If you get some proper caflon (or equivalent) earrings they have a little groove half way on the post of the earring. This is designed to stop the butterfly being pushed further up the post and into the rear of the ear.
I also recommend keeping a pair of earrings in (obviously can be changed) for a year without having a break to help prevent the holes healing over.
