HELP posting for traffic

DD11 had lobe piercing done 8 weeks ago, all healing fine although right ear has been a little sore last couple of weeks. Just removed them tonight as thought had been long enough- they were v stiff and so wasn't able to do it as delicately as planned!

Left ear fine, right ear v red and oozy- there's an indent almost as if the earring had been in too tight?

What on earth do I do now? Putting earrings back in seems crazy but will they heal over if we leave them open? DH bemused and unhelpful about whole affair as he doesn't see the point in "unnecessary holes" [GRIN]

Thank you for mumsnet wisdom !

Put them back in asap - now - and use salt water soaks twice a day from now on.

dementedpixie · 20/08/2019 21:45

Dont turn the earrings, that's not current advice

FairyDust92 · 20/08/2019 21:45

Oh god 😫.
I'd put an earring back in maybe?
Don't make the same mistake we did. My uncle brought my some earrings when I was about 8 the stud was quite small didn't think anything about it. Put them in and woke up and my skin had over grown the earring! My mum thought I'd taken my earrings out! The pain to get them out was unreal 🤢

adaline · 20/08/2019 21:55

Get some hypoallergenic studs and clean the ears twice a day with warm salt water. Make sure hands are washed before touching the ears and no fiddling!

It'll heal, she just needs to be patient and be careful what metal she wears too.

mrspotatohed · 20/08/2019 21:57

It's probably not fully healed and has been irritated by the earrings being hard to remove. Like lots of other PPs say, salt water is your friend, sea salt preferably. Don't turn them. Crustys are a sign of healing and are normal. I've got a shit ton of metal in my ears and I've had to do this with one or two of the cartilage piercings. All have healed greatSmile

chocatoo · 20/08/2019 21:59

We struggled with DDs ear piercings as the skin behind the butterflies wouldn’t heal. In the end I got old fashioned tiny gold sleepers (hoops) which did the trick.

bouncydog · 20/08/2019 21:59

Many years since mine were pierced but we used to wash with warm salt water twice a day and gently turn the sleeper (small gold ring)., if the ear was sore we would apply a spot of Vaseline with a clean cotton bud. They were healed after 6-8 weeks to change earrings but always put gold sleepers in at night.

Aquickquestionforyou · 20/08/2019 22:00

In boiling water, let them cool. Put them back in. Then no touchy!!! And definitely no twisting. You can buy something called Neilmed spray if they’re looking a bit red.

Aquickquestionforyou · 20/08/2019 22:01

Advice has changed and you are no longer advised to twist them.

WorraLiberty · 20/08/2019 22:08

I'd clean with cool boiled salt water, rub a bit of Vaseline on the ears and they should slide straight in.

Enko · 20/08/2019 22:14

I am going to assume you did not go to a piercer for this and due to this can't contact them for further support.

However 8 weeks is not long enough. 12 weeks is what the piercer who did DD3 (age 15)s ears recommended earlier this month.

Put the earring back in ASAP
DO NOT TURN THEM!! This is really old advice and really bad for healing.

IF at all you can manage it I would go to a piercing/tattoo parlour and see if they will sell you some of the type of earrings they put into new piercings. The Butterfly ones are really not good for new piercings. They need from for a bit of swelling ..

and salt water as recommended. Hope it heals without any issues.

RB68 · 20/08/2019 22:14

please keep a close eye and if it gets red and angry or the red area is growing seek help - it is an infection. As a minimum I would ask a pharmacist.

Salt water will help short term and put the cleaned earing back in (ie sterilised)

Wereeaglesdare · 20/08/2019 22:15

My nan used to use a bit of marg for this to make the earing slick in to her ear (not one infection in 70 years believe it or not lol) Not advocating ordinary marg but you can get piercing healing butter that basically consists of coconut oil and she butter and teetree oil. Just stick a bit on the back of the earing and it should slide in without any fuss. But do as everyone else says and bathe the area with salt water first.

princessTiasmum · 20/08/2019 22:18

When i had mine pierced ,i ws told to bathe every day turning them with surgical spirit,if you could get some tomorrow it might help

dementedpixie · 20/08/2019 22:18

And you dont need surgical spirit either

Puffinhead · 20/08/2019 22:20

Sorry to jump on this thread but my DD had her ears pierced 3 weeks ago. Are we not meant to turn them when cleaning??

FamilyOfAliens · 20/08/2019 22:21

Definitely don’t turn them. You’re just keeping the wound open that way and it won’t heal.

newmum0808 · 20/08/2019 22:32

My daughter's earrings went a bit gammy. All the research I did suggested just using saline spray (for piercings).very easy to use and it healed up really quickly. I got it from Amazon.

Puffinhead · 20/08/2019 22:36

@FamilyOfAliens thanks. Thinking about it that makes perfect sense. Doh!

M3lon · 20/08/2019 22:41

How ridiculous.

Maybe not such a great idea to deliberately wound your children in the name of beauty eh?

Well I will have my fingers crossed for you that your DD doesn't have the same experience I did and wind up in hospital for 6 weeks as a result of this stupidity. I also hope you don't end up using up antibiotics that could have been used for someone who actually needed surgery. Antibiotic resistance is soon going to be a threat in all our lives and idiots deliberately exposing themselves to infection should, but won't be, the first against the wall.

AdoraBell · 20/08/2019 22:42

Hope they heal soon OP

dementedpixie · 20/08/2019 22:42

Oh shut up

nugget396 · 20/08/2019 22:44

Probably time you log off eh @M3lon

LadyOfTheFlowers · 20/08/2019 22:47

I've got 10 piercings total ; this is what I do to allow them to heal.
Use a clean cotton bud to drop a single drop of salt water onto the piercing twice a day. It will seep in wherever it needs to without any further assistance. Do not fiddle with the earring. Do not twist it. Do not touch it unnecessarily. Do make sure the back isn't on really tight.
As other have said, the correct metal is imperative. Surgical steel ideally for healing phase.

It is a wound that needs to heal at the end of the day. I don't know any other wound we get that we fiddle with constantly. Wink

Serin · 20/08/2019 22:48

Blimey M3lon, why dont you say what you really think? Grin
