To think the school holidays should just be August ?

It's too long. I think a break in routine does kids good, but it's too much all at once. I think in Italy August is considered Holiday month ( not sure about the school holiday length ) but I know a lot of businesses close down for August there. Aibu ?

The shorter the better IMO. Kids should be learning, not lazing about the house.

ChicCroissant · 20/08/2019 17:17

No, my DD has been especially in need of the break this year after her first year of secondary but we love the long summer holidays anyway!

Usually we do lots of activities but this year she just wanted to chill, mainly. She really needed a break.

ChristmasArmadillo · 20/08/2019 17:17

12 weeks here. I love it, I can’t imagine trying to fit all of our summer activities + many lazy days into less time. One month would be horrible!!

PuffHuffle5 · 20/08/2019 17:17

Private schools get 9 weeks.

AryaStarkWolf · 20/08/2019 17:17

Kids are off school in Italy from June through till beginning of September! Now that's long!

Ireland its end of June to end start of September for primary school and for secondary school its end of May to end of August. I think it's fantastic for the kids to have a good long break and be kids, some of my best memories are things from those long summers.

Of course it must be hard for parents who work ft and need extra childcare though so I sympathise there

arethereanyleftatall · 20/08/2019 17:18

Yabu. I'm loving it, we want it to go on much longer.

AryaStarkWolf · 20/08/2019 17:18

Some of my best memories as a child I mean*

mawbroon · 20/08/2019 17:18

I think the Scottish holidays should start earlier.
The light nights are great and I am reluctant to bring DCs in from playing out in the couple of weeks before the holidays.

OtraCosaMariposa · 20/08/2019 17:19

I love the summer break! We finished this year on 27th June and went back on 15th August. 7 lovely weeks.

catofdoom · 20/08/2019 17:19

YABU.

DS finished on the 7th June this year and doesn't go back until 3rd September.

MrsLinManuelMiranda · 20/08/2019 17:22

I used to work in a crèche where there were 3 staff members. Only 1member of staff allowed leave at any one time. The 6 week break just about managed to allow all 3 of us to have 2 week AL each. Would have been a nightmare if there were not enough weeks to go around iyswim!

tuberr0se · 20/08/2019 17:22

I love the summer holidays! Wish they were longer!

MyDcAreMarvel · 20/08/2019 17:22

Yabu they should be at least all of July and August. Wonder why people bother having kids judging by Facebook complaints from sahm’s with dc with no Sen.

Legomadx2 · 20/08/2019 17:22

My lot have seven weeks this summer and I am exhausted - and broke!

AnnaMariaDreams · 20/08/2019 17:23

No thanks.
For a start it always rains a lot in August- the whole of July would be better.
I enjoy my time with DS although I do have to work so he has some holiday clubs and grandparent days. He loves it all. Today he came home head to toe mud - he’s been damming a stream at Forest school. Last week my parents took him to Northumberland- lovely times at Alnwick and Hadrian’s wall. “Making memories” as the awful saying goes Wink
Children need to have time to play -school is too full on for them as it is these days.

dustarr73 · 20/08/2019 17:23

Mine finished 28th June and are back 2nd September.Im counting down the days.I think a week longer at Christmas would be better.

TheBadCop · 20/08/2019 17:26

yanbu. I think the long Summer hols are way too long. only enjoyable if you are minted enough not to work for 6 weeks. Many parents have no choice but to work. It's just stress in that case for me( ferrying the DC to the holiday club instead of school) stress for the DC (one of mine has severe learning diffs and finds the whole holiday club experience overwhelming but it's the only childcare that will accept her) and childcare costs a bombe which means we cannot even do anything nice during the weekends when I am off work and just stay at home.

It truly sucks all the joy of our life.

PinguDance · 20/08/2019 17:28

I’m always torn on this as I can see the benefit of 6 weeks off or more for kids who get to enjoy themselves, relax etc. but it’s a long time to be at home with nothing to do for children who’s families are not very nice or can’t afford to do very much. There are definitely some kids round my way who just get into bother. I think it would be alright if it was more like in France where everything really slows down in August but in the UK it’s not like that.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 20/08/2019 17:28

We only have 5 and a half weeks this year. Any shorter would make it harder for some employers to agree parental annual leave.

That said, I would like to break up a week earlier for Xmas when the kids are tired & half the country is ill. I’m convinced it would save us squillions as a nation in reduced sick days & lead to fewer frail & elderly people needing hospital admission.

Rachelover40 · 20/08/2019 17:29

I think it's OK as it is. I used to get eight weeks in the summer as did my son.

Ginseng1 · 20/08/2019 17:30

UK hols are the shortest! Always feel sorry for my niece n nephew & bil (teacher) trudging to school in the recent hot Julys! We've 9 weeks (ire) it's tricky to organise around work but I wouldn't begrudge them one bit! Now secondary Ireland hols if not in exam year end may to end August. Now THAT is too long I think! Least with the uni holidays they can go get work.

Madfrogs · 20/08/2019 17:30

Nope in fact I think they should have an extra week or two put on in July. The last week tend to be doing nothing much anyway so just let them go home and enjoy being children. Because after that it’s work then death. Children need time to be bored and relax and find themselves they are not mini adults or robots.

DarkDarkNight · 20/08/2019 17:30

I think make the Summer Holidays a bit shorter and tag the extra time on to a half-term such as October.

jellycatspyjamas · 20/08/2019 17:32

I think children need a decent break from academic learning. I know my two were worn out by the end of term and were just about ready to go back last week. I think 7 weeks in summer, week in October, fortnight at Christmas and spring is really well spread out and means kids are never too far from a break. I can always tell when my DC are getting to where they need to rest and relax in the school year - down time is important.

PeculiarBerries · 20/08/2019 17:33

YABU. The summer holidays are too short imo
