To the supermarket which is a 30 minute walk away. I hate carrying bags in my hands so thought the rucksack would be better but i don't want to look ridiculous.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie you wear a full 'I'm off trekking round the world' rucksack everyday? Like this?

Thanks for the replies. I'm really trying to not give a shit what other people think but i am always extremely self-concious about little things. I'm autistic and was going to walk to Aldi for the first time but couldnt find my rucksack afterall so just went to the little sainsburys instead. I'm going to get a bigger rucksack online now as the other one is too small anyway (Even if i do manage to find it!)

Cassian that would be a bit overkill, and would probably piss everyone off in the supermarket as each turn would wipe out a whole shelf Grin

ah, right. Well, that's what I was assuming you meant, as people carry around 'normal' sized backpacks all the time and I couldn't understand why you'd feel self-conscious about an everyday bag. However, you have now explained that!

TiredOldTable · 20/08/2019 13:08

TiredOldTable People piss in the aisles? Where the hell do you live??

I take it that you have never worked in a supermarket

Very posh area and in Waitrsoe no less- regular. (not me I add)

VioletCharlotte · 20/08/2019 13:40

You might be better off with a trolley bag (like older people sometimes use). I've seen younger people use them as well, you can get some quite nice ones these days.

ukgift2016 · 20/08/2019 13:42

Nah, I see lots of adults wearing rucksacks. I would not give you a second glance.

Northernsoullover · 20/08/2019 13:46

I came here to check I wasn't committing an awful faux pas by frequently sporting a rucksack. I have one for university. I'm planning on walking this term so I might buy a natty waterproof cover for it Grin

Blobby10 · 20/08/2019 13:46

I always wear a backpack when I walk to the shops - feels a bit weird on the way down when its empty but much easier coming back up the hill than carrying the stuff in bags in my hands Grin

VenusOfWillendorf · 20/08/2019 14:05

Perfectly normal to use a rucksack for the supermarket shop.
I've a little shopping trolley with wheels (from Ikea!).

Before my sister got a car she used to take a large wheely suitcase. Now that did look odd. She said it was easier to walk home with than a rucksack!

gigglingHyena · 20/08/2019 14:15

I suspect I look odd, but I do it anyway.

No one has ever commented on a small backpack, which I pretty much don't leave the house without.

My mid sized, 40ltr one doesn't attract attention either (well, except when it's in the buggy rather than a child)

I can however say, yes a 65ltr hiking backpack does get comments, occasionally from the person on the checkout, often from people I sort of know at the school gate. Not really negative comments, but certainly comments. I have yet to see anyone else on the school run with one, but hey, perhaps I can start a trend.

I don't get on with trolley bags, I'm much more comfortable pushing something than pulling it. Just can't quite bring myself to go for the 4 wheel push able trolleys.

Toneitdown · 20/08/2019 14:17

Are rucksacks daft? Blush

FFS, I'm forever being told that stuff I do is daft/uncool. I'm oblivious! I must be getting old...

Whatisthisfuckery · 20/08/2019 14:22

Is wearing a rucksack to go to the supermarket ridiculous? No, don’t be so ridiculous.

cheeseislife8 · 20/08/2019 14:24

Course not! I ride a motorbike and always have a rucksack with me, I use it as a handbag even if I'm not on the bike because it's easier than transferring my stuff. Crack on!

EmeraldShamrock · 20/08/2019 14:30

I use one going to work. I do feel odd especially if it is to heavy for one shoulder and i need both straps on it feels like I am walking to school.

HeronLanyon · 20/08/2019 14:38

go for it op. I’m sorry you’ve got some anxiety about it but this thread has I think shown pretty much no one will think anything (other than how sensible). I have myself tennis elbow back in feb/March lugging home all Brexit stash stuff.
Now doing it again and I’m definitely using rucksack/small wheeled suitcase even. Very ‘posh’ area and Waitrose closest supermarket. See all sorts including proms used, bikes clearly just used for their panniers (not ridden to shop), loads of differing trolleys, backpacks, servants (!Hmm once saw very famous older landed/London estate family Doyenne there with her ‘man’ who had large wheeled trolley) !
No one bats an eyelid.

My baby changing bag is a rucksack

Isn't everyone's? I remember being a lot comfier when I swapped from the one specifically meant as a baby change bag from mothercare to a proper walking day sack.

Rucksacks are also good, obviously, for going out with older DC, sightseeing etc.

GREATAUNT1 · 20/08/2019 15:27

Why would you look ridiculous, is it because you’re embarrassed in case you see anyone you know? Just tell them you’ve been to the Himalayas. It’s also so much easier to carry stuff, & loads of people have them. I’ve used one for years & have a selection of them now. I’m sitting here now lovingly looking at my latest leather tan one, for going out not shopping Smile

DappledThings · 20/08/2019 15:51

You would think Errol but I recently posted on a thread about best changing bags to say just get a normal rucksack. Included a picture of my very normal looking rucksack ready for the day and somebody commented to say they "wouldn't be seen dead" with something like that and that some people "actually care how they look". It was really bizarre that something as innocuous as a plain black and red rucksack could bother someone so much!

ginyogarepeat · 20/08/2019 18:41

Outside of proper handbag for work I use a rucksack 90% of the time for everything else! So much more practical, and better for back and shoulders.
